HEADLINE: West Indies announce squad for ICC Men's T20 World Cup

CaribbeanCricket.com May 3, 2024, 2:45:33 PM

Batsman Shimron Hetmyer and uncapped fast bowler Shamar Joseph are among five Guyanese in the West Indies squad for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup next month in the Caribbean and USA.

The announcement was made at a press conference by Chairman of Selector The Most Honourable Dr. Desmond Haynes and Head Coach Daren Sammy in Barbados on Friday morning.

All-rounders Romario Shepherd and Sherfane Rutherford and left-arm spinner Gudakesh Motie are the other Guyanese in the 15-man squad.

While Hetmyer is well established in the format, having played 212 T20 matches (57 T20 Internationals), Joseph has played just three domestic T20s and is yet to pick up a wicket.

A team to match and beat anyone on the day,Hetmyer and Pooran can upset the best bowling on their day I hope it's our day when it comes.

Love your optimistic outlook, as a WI people, we back our boys 100% even when we disagree with marginal and lucky picks.

I felt Hetmeyer, Motie and especially Chase to be very very lucky to make the squad.

I wanted Fabien, Myers and Pierre to be in the squad instead of the lucky 3. Hety's pick, given his history of insubordination, poor performance and gross disrespect for his team is extremely curious

Having said that, our people are also forgiving and I know our region will toss aside our personal preference and back every player and pray for their success.

Hettmyer is back then Myers would be a better fit than Rutherford. In the event of an injury to king or Charles, or just poor form, who is our third opener? Please don’t tell me Hope in T20. Besides Myers could be a good option with the ball when used properly

Jeremy May 3, 2024, 8:46:19 PM

Good squad, hopefully we can make it to the semi finals stage.

Is that why he did not realize that Hetmeyer and Chase were not Indo-Guyanese, the group he favors for his bias & racist vitriol.

For the last three world cups, Guyana has had ONE player in the WC squad. I say let the Guyanese enjoy and be proud.

Shai is Bajan boss. But who cares where players from as long as they are part of our best team. Hetty doesn’t have the numbers to show but he is one of our best four batters on the team and with his ability and potential I would definitely pick him no matter where he is from. I like his fielding and energy he brings to the team. Last year against England it’s a catch he took that helped us beat England

Raskil May 7, 2024, 10:20:28 AM

I don’t really care who’s from where…

I like to support our best team.

It’s important to note that something is being done differently in Guyana, particularly in Berbice.

hubert May 8, 2024, 11:38:39 AM

I don't have any great interest in this WC and do not really plan on watching much
since a lot of games are really not that enticing. Who wants to watch a WI Uganda or Papua Game.
Mi Puppa . Afghanistan is a bit better but the only group game of worth is against NZ.
That said I won't be surprised if WI lose to Papua and Uganda.

As for the squad, It is good to see Hetty back in the mix. But I think players
like Allen and McKoy, especially the latter as a death bowler ,will be missed.

BTW Jamaica not hosting is ok. The Little Rock has 3 Big games however against
South Africa in Pre tournament Games this month and they won't have to break the bank to host a top quality International team.
Jamaica is a winner and some others may still whine about too few quality games in the Real Thing.
Wuh Loss.lol

Hubert, where did you find information on this SA tour to the West Indies. There is a thread somewhere where no one seems to find anything regarding schedule etc.

Edited: I just saw Walco's post with the dates
