Satta Massagana is a roots reggae album released by The Abyssinians officially in 1976. It is widely considered The Abyssinians' crowning achievement and a classic roots reggae album.

The title track "Satta Massagana" was a huge hit and has been covered numerous times by both The Abyssinians and other artists since. It has even been adopted by some Rastafarian groups as a hymn used during services.

The song, which translates from the Amharic language "አመሰገነ" as "He Gave Praise", was originally recorded for Studio One in 1969, but the label's owner, Clement "Coxsone" Dodd declined to release it.

Dem man deh tek their spirituality seriously. I'd say they are more culturally Rastafari and
spiritually Orthodox Christian.

So, did I. And I have seen them live 3 times in the ‘80s and ‘90s.

Satta amasa gana - 'Always give thanks'

As an active musician for some 40 yrs, it would be remiss of me not to recognize how inspirational this song was then. One of the very first songs I learned after hearing the Third World cover for the first time at 11 yrs (the harmony intrigued me). Didn't know it was not the original until I obtained The Abyssinians version, just as excellent.

Btw, Milton 'Prilly' Hamilton was the LV on that album before Bunny Rugs entered the scene. Pity Prilly only did that one album which was deemed a most brilliant debut in 1976.
