Narper
2024-06-17 23:24:01
Venue: Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium, Gros Islet, St Lucia
What to expect:
Runs once again. 180 has been chased and the 200-mark has been breached in two games so far. Both sides with batting adventurism will look forward to getting out there and swing for the fences

Rashid Khan:
We are gonna bowl. It's just about making sure how we go about the run-chase. Also, with the oppsition, it is best to bowl first. We have to adjust quickly, we have seen a couple of games here, it's going to be a bouncy wicket, most of the guys have played in the CPL and that will help. Toss is not a big advantage, it's more about playing the right brand of cricket and taking good decisions.

Powell:
It is more to gain than to lose, it's a good opportunity for us to play good cricket. It's not a matter of stressing it, it's a matter of gaining confidence from this game. We have two changes - Romario Shepherd is out and Obed McCoy is in and Roston Chase is out and Shai Hope comes in. Romario is with his family for the birth of his second child.

Toss: Afghanistan choose to bowl. "Just about how we do in a run chase," Rashid says. "Also as a bowling unit and the opposition, best to bowl first. Beauty of our team has been to adjust according to conditions. We've seen a couple of games here. Have to go with the right mindset. Should be a bouncy wicket, most of the guys know this wicket from the CPL.
(Toss an advantage?) Not on these pitches, and more about playing the right cricket and taking the right decisions. Same team.
Rovman Powell says "there's more to gain than to lose" on this potential dead rubber. "We want to tighten the batting, bowling and fielding. It's a matter of us keeping our foot on the pedal and bring confidence in the group moving into the Super Eight. Today is an opportunity for both individuals and teams to shine. McCoy replaces Shepherd. Chase replaces Shai Hope. Tactical but also Romario is welcoming his child. That's what we embrace as a team, to let him go, since family is very important."
No hetty
JUST IN: "Romario Shepherd has left the West Indies camp to be present for the birth of his second child, Romaire Shepherd. He will return to the squad tomorrow, Tuesday, June 18."

Sammy, WI coach: Good feeling. St Lucia is always special. We know what we are going to get. It is a great feeling and to do that with the team already qualifying, even better. I think this group has a level of focus and a desire to win every game. We've been tested but we've been finding a way, something we haven't done in last couple of years."

High of 31 degrees today and also a small chance of rain, and the wind is blowing at more than 20kmph today. The square boundaries are 63m to one side and 72m to the other side and the straight boundary is 77m. Looks like a fantastic wicket, the two previous games have been high-scoring. There’s a nice even covering of grass, there are a few cracks but they are not moving that much. There’s going to be good bounce on this wicket, mention Matthew Hayden and Natalie Germanos in their pitch report

As has been the case, Brandon King to take first strike. No surprises, Fazalhaq Farooqi with the new ball. The wind is blowing from left to right as he runs in. Both King and Johnson Charles will have to protect their front pads. A slip and short third in place
8:28pm A "sizeable crowd" in Gros Islet, in words of Ian Bishop on air. The weather forecast looks clear, i am interested to see how the teams adapt to the wind factor that has been a regular presence in St. Lucia this T20 World Cup. We saw a superb catch from Sybrand Engelbrecht, who later announced his international retirement yesterday. A bit more of that today?

Knocked him over, Omarzai the King!
Such a beauty to bowl early in the spell. Bowls it on a length with a wobble seam, King is unsure of coming forward or staying back. The ball goes straight on, King's half-stride works against him. He is still on the move as the ball ricochets off the inside edge to peg back middle. Afghanistan on the board early and Omarzai has his arms stretches as he runs in celebration

Was a back of a length ball around off, Pooran looked to tuck it across but it seemed to have deflected off his pads. Gurbaz fumbled but managed to grab it on the second attempt. ⏩First 13 balls: 36 runs (4x4, 3x6)
⏸️Next 27 balls: 19 runs (0x4, 0x6)
⏩Last 13 balls: 43 runs (2x4, 5x6)
10:13pm Highest total for West Indies in men's T20 World Cups and their batters come to the party and their batters come to the party. Scored heavily in the first five overs and the last five - the most in these phases where ball-by-ball records are available, the middle ten bringing them just 63. This is a good batting track, but it is a formidable score. It was that man Pooran again, putting a big-hitting masterclass against pace and spin. It was helped in part by West Indies getting a superb start with King and Charles getting off the blocks quickly.
Nothing highlights the batters' dominance today more than the fact that Farooqi, the leading wicket-taker of T20 World Cup 2024, did not complete his quota. He was never allowed to settle and as a result, most of Afghanistan's bowling plans came undone.
Not all doom and gloom for Afghanistan, though. They have a very good batting line-up, albeit a touch untested in this competition. With nothing to lose, there cannot be a better occasion for them to join the party.
