10.18am: Breaking: West Indies have made a late change to their XI. "Gudakesh Motie has been replaced in the originally announced team by Kevin Sinclair," a CWI spokesperson says. "Motie woke up feeling unwell and is unable to take his place in the side."

West Indies: 1 Kraigg Brathwaite (capt), 2 Mikyle Louis, 3 Kirk McKenzie, 4 Alick Athanaze, 5 Kavem Hodge, 6 Jason Holder, 7 Joshua da Silva (wk), 8 Kevin Sinclair (late replacement for Gudakesh Motie), 9 Alzarri Joseph, 10 Shamar Joseph, 11 Jayden Seales.

Narper 2024-07-18 09:32:48

West Indies have won the toss and have opted to field

Kraigg Brathwaite | WI Captain:
We'll have a bowl first, looks like a good cricket pitch, want to utlise what we get today. We could be a lot more disciplined with the ball. Sinclair comes in as Motie has the flu. We have to score at least 300 runs in the first innings. (On the Gabba win) Can take a lot of confidence, coming off a loss and winning at Gabba. We have to be disciplined and we can do great things

Narper 2024-07-18 09:33:29

Sinclair replaces Motie
Motie has the flu
Mark Wood comes in for James Anderson.

mikesiva 2024-07-18 09:35:53

10.30am: The captains are in the middle for the toss. West Indies win it, and choose to bowl. "It looks a good cricket pitch but we'll utilise what we get," says Kraigg Brathwaite. He wants discipline from the bowling attack and confirms Motie has flu.

I'm not sure about that. The first two days are expected to be sunny, and better for batting, than Day Three, when it's expected to be overcast and cloudy.

Chrissy 2024-07-18 09:45:17

Phew - we won di tosslol

hubert 2024-07-18 09:49:42

In reply to Chrissy

That is a good start..however I would have batted first. I am a bat first person/captain.
Hope it works out for them tho ..got to put pressure on the Poms and hold the catches.
Sinclair in the 11 is a bonus.
Will watch the first hour .

mikesiva 2024-07-18 09:58:17

In reply to hubert

IMHO Sinclair's the better batsman, but Motie's the better bowler.

It's a pity Motie's ill. It's going to be hot in England for the next two days, so Motie's bowling will be missed.

Narper 2024-07-18 10:01:49

A sunny morning in Nottingham as the players walk out to the field.
Perfect batting conditions on one of the best batting wickets in England.

Alzarri Joseph to Crawley, out Caught by Athanaze!! Third ball wicket!! That's more like the Alzarri Joseph we know... A back of length delivery onto off, gets some steep bounce once again and squares up Zak Crawley.

Alzarri Joseph to Ollie Pope, FOUR, top shot to respond to a solid first over so far!! Joseph goes fuller again, a tad too straight this time and Ollie Pope dishes out a straight drive.

Narper 2024-07-18 10:14:18

1.4
Jayden Seales to Duckett, FOUR, four more!! Seales not learning the lesson as he errs by going too full outside off. Once again a simple drive through covers from the southpaw. A confident little start from Ben Duckett
1.3
Jayden Seales to Duckett, FOUR, a hat-trick of fours!! Seales tried to get it to angle back onto the pads, strays too full again and Duckett neatly closes the bat face to glance it through mid-wicket for a boundary
Seales switches to round the wicket
1.2
Jayden Seales to Duckett, FOUR, four more! A length ball angling wide outside off. Duckett laps up the width on offer and cuts it away to the left of backward point for a boundary
1.1
Jayden Seales to Duckett, FOUR, first ball boundary! Too full and just outside off, sits up perfectly for Ben Duckett to drive through covers for a boundary. Perfect body postion, no bat pad gap as he strides closer and drives it through a vacant patch of green

A length ball that angles outside off. Duckett waits and then punches it slightly in front of square to the left of the point fielder

Fastest ever team Test fifty.

Holder to Duckett, FOUR, 50 for Ben Duckett, off just 32 balls! A fuller delivery that bounces just a bit extra onto off. Duckett opens the bat face and gets that off the sticker behind square for a boundary. A tepid raise of the bat towards the dressing room as the entire stadium stands up and applauds.

Shamar Joseph to Ollie Pope, FOUR, neatly timed!! A length ball on off stump, Pope stays on his backfoot and cuts it late to guide it between slips and backward point

Narper 2024-07-18 10:59:02

1.1
Holder to Duckett, FOUR, threaded through the needle!! There were four fielders close in on the off side - a short cover, a cover point and two gullies. Yet Ben Duckett manages to drive this overpitched delivery just outside off between the two fielders in front of square for a boundary

Drinks are on the field now.

England have bazball-ed their way to 86/1 after 12 overs as West Indies went either too full, too short or too wide. The last few overs have got a bit more control to the visitors, specially since Holder came on to ball. Let's see how the next hour pans out..

Taking too long to introduce the offspinner. The lefthander is hitting too many fours.

Gawn !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

18.6
Shamar Joseph to Duckett, out Caught by Holder!! Edged and gone! The West Indies get rewarded for keeping things tight, they built up some pressure by containing the runs and they've got what they were after. Was full and just outside off, Duckett went for another drive through the line and on the up, just seemed to nip away a shade off the deck and it caught a thick outside edge. Went quick and low to Holder's right at 2nd slip but he did well to pouch this.

Would've been a stunner had he taken it, length delivery outside off, bit of width and Pope went hard on the cut, there was just a bit more bounce than he accounted for and he couldn't keep it down, went like a rocket to Athanaze's right at backward point and it just didn't stick

Jayden Seales to Root, out Caught by Alzarri Joseph!! Beaten last ball and out this time!! A short ball from Root who perhaps was just a bit nervy after being beaten the ball before. Shamar Joseph to Stokes, 1 run, walks across his stumps and turns this full delivery on off-stump down to long leg

Shamar Joseph isn't looking happy here, he's stretching his left hamstring. Concerning if you're a West Indies fan because he had problems at Lord's as well in the previous game and didn't bowl much at all. The physio is running out and Kraigg Brathwaite has started marking his run-up. Not ideal at all from a West Indies perspective. Looks like he's a goner here. Yep, Shamar Joseph is walking off gingerly. He's trying his best to stretch it out but it's not happening, off he goes for the second time in the series.

Kavem Hodge to Stokes, out Caught by (sub)Jeremiah Louis!! He's picked the man out! Stokes cannot believe his luck, he looked set for a lot more here. Easy to understand his disappointment as well considering this was a half-tracker just outside off, he went deep in his crease looking to smoke it over deep mid-wicket but didn't get the desired connection, ended up hitting straight down the throat of the substitute stationed at deep mid-wicket. A bonus wicket for the West Indies and a maiden Test wicket for Hodge.

Kavem Hodge to Jamie Smith, out Caught by Holder!! He goes big and then he goes out! Another bonus wicket this as far as the West Indies as concerned. This was flatter and much quicker just outside off, Jamie Smith pressed back looking to heave it away over wide long-on, rushed him a touch and he ended up mistiming it down to the man at long-on. No mistake from Holder as he ran in and slid to complete the catch

That means 100 runs by top 3...one century also by one of the top 3 and 50s by #4 and #5 while one remaining not out at end of with no 6 or 7...close to 400 for 5 max at end of day 2. Gus Atkinson to Athanaze, 2 runs, maiden Test wicket for Alick Athanaze!! A back of length delivery onto the hips, Athanaze pulls it along the ground towards deep square leg. A sigh of relief from the southpaw and then comes the raised bat towards the dressing room. He's played quite superbly so far, and will look to cash in further...

The idiot added additional commentary but cannot see his major mistake. Total disrespect!

Stokes to Athanaze, out Caught by Harry Brook!! Stokes is pumped up! The 175-run stand has been broken. Athanaze walks back disappointed as there was a century up for grabs. On a driveable length and there's some width on offer, Athanaze is lured into an expansive drive and gets a thick outside edge towards gully. Brook stationed there takes a sharp reaction catch to his left. Is this the opening England needed?

Woakes to Kavem Hodge, out Lbw!! Hodge has been given out lbw but he has reviewed it straightaway! Was on a good length and it jagged back sharply from outside off, Kavem Hodge was late to bring his bat down as the ball pinged him on the front pad. Time for the replays. UltraEdge rolls in and it shows a flat line. Over to ball-tracking and hitting is umpire's call - would have gone on to hit the top of middle and leg. The rub of the green finally goes England's way. Kavem Hodge walks back and is greeted with a standing ovation from the crowd

They aided in setting a test 2nd day record for runs as well.

Most runs conceded by England in a day's play in men's Tests since 2011: 368 vs IND, Chennai, 2016 (Day 4); 363 vs AUS, Birmingham, 2019 (Day 4); 351 vs WI, Nottingham, 2024 (Day 2)

Fuller length ball well outside off, Alzarri Joseph looks to go big downtown but the ball moves away a bit and an outside edge is induced. Jamie Smith gets low to his right and pouches it safely.

Woakes to Jayden Seales, out Bowled!! Two wickets in two balls for Woakes! Brilliantly bowled! In the corridor of uncertainty, pitches and seams away, Jayden Seales prods ahead to block but leaves a bit of bat and pad gap. The ball flies right through that gap and hits the top of off. Jayden Seales to Duckett, out Crawley Run Out!! What an unexpected breakthrough!! An unlucky end to Zak Crawley's Test match, his Test match will end with just 3 runs scored on this belter of a wicket at Trent Bridge. Full and angling across towards off stump, driven straight as an arrow and deflects off the non-striker's stumps towards mid-off. A fairly muted appeal for a run out and the replays show that Seales got his fingertips onto the ball before it went crashing onto the non striker's stumps, Crawley was caught out of his crease.

Jayden Seales to Ollie Pope, FOUR, Seales concedes a first ball boundary again!! And this one is a cracking cover drive reminiscent of the great Ian Bell cover drive. Seales doesn't help his case by dishing out a half volley outside off

cumberland 2024-07-20 13:18:23

Josh should have run the runs he had on offer rather than try to shield Shamar. He'd be closer to that 100. Compounds it with his off key advice to SJ who by then had 33 of 26 balls. Unfortunately JDS dug his own grave! Still 82* reflects well.

Poggy 2024-07-20 13:18:23

Shamar Joseph to Woakes, out Caught by Holder!! Shamar Joseph gets the better of Woakes! First wicket for him in this innings. On a length outside off, a bit of extra bounce on it and the ball skids through as well, Woakes is rushed a bit as he tries

Woakes c Holder b Shamar Joseph 12(23) [4s-1]

Alzarri Joseph to Root, FOUR, there's the century for Root and he gets there in style! His 32nd Test Ton! He pumps his fists, takes his helmet off, raises his bat and has calm look on his face. The Trent Brdige crowd is up on its feet and so are his teammates in the dressing room. He has been solid as a rock and keeps churning up the runs. On a fuller length outside off, Root leaned into it and unleashed

As long as we dont imitate England and let tailenders smash us around... like we did to them.

I say tighten the fielding and hunt for the wicket instead of waiting on them to make mistakes

Narper 2024-07-21 14:04:36

89.1
Holder to Root, out Caught by Kirk McKenzie!! The bowling change has worked! Root has played this shot to great effect today but this time he faulters and pays the price. A brilliant knock from him nonetheless. On a fuller length well outside off, Root leans ahead and drives it but doesn't bother to keep it down. Mckenzie at covers takes a smart catch. Root walks off to a standing ovation from the Trent Bridge crowd. He loves batting at this venue and has made it count once again.

Root c Kirk McKenzie b Holder 122(17cool [4s-10]

90.3
Jayden Seales to Gus Atkinson, 1 run, dropped! Fuller length ball outside off, shaping away, Gus Atkinson goes for a drive with minimal foot movement and gets a thick outside edge. Holder wasn't expecting it perhaps and is a bit late to react. It comes at chest height to his right and he fluffs it

Narper 2024-07-21 14:05:23

90.4
Jayden Seales to Mark Wood, no run, another one goes down! Skiddy back of a length ball outside off, Mark Wood punches at it but gets an outside edge. Hodge at first slip dives to his left and gets both hands to it. He has almost got it in control but it somehow pops out

Narper 2024-07-21 14:05:51

90.5
Jayden Seales to Mark Wood, out Bowled!! Knocked him over! Full, quick and attacking the stumps. Mark Wood is rooted to the crease as he looks to keep it out but the ball swings away and crashes into the off-stump. Finally some luck for Jayden Seales.

Jayden Seales to Shoaib Bashir, out Bowled!! Timber! England are bowled out for 425! Jayden Seales finishes with a 4-fer! Full ball swinging in, Shoaib Bashir looks to flick with minimal foot movement and misses. It deflects off his pads and shatters the stumps behind

While New Zealand hold the record of the highest fourth innings totals (440 against England in 1973 and 345 against England in 1983) in Nottingham Tests, both those innings had come in losing causes. Even Australia and England (once each) have posted fourth innings totals in excess of 300 at this venue in the past but neither had come in a winning cause.

Was not aware of that stat. Does explain something about WI .

This is a pitch to bat on...fast outfield too. I wonder smile

Wood is very fast but not intimidating as he is looking to breach defence and not using
a bouncer as he should do often .The openers know exactly where he is at and are coping
with his pace good enough.

He might just resurface as a Head Coach.

Funny chap knows when to leave the ball when it is close to him but has a harder time judging to leave when it is farther outside the stump

Woakes to Brathwaite, out Caught by Jamie Smith!! Edged & gone! The duo of Woakes and Jamie Smith combine once again for England. On a length in that corrdior of uncertainity, moves after slightly off the deck to induce the edge through to the keeper. End of a good innings from Brathwaite, but not good enough for the circumstances. England on top now!

Shoaib Bashir to Kavem Hodge, out Lbw!! Another one! That's four wickets in four overs now for England! A fuller delivery that starts outside off and spins in sharply. Hodge stuck trying to go onto the backfoot to clip it leg side. Late on the shot and struck bang in front of the stumps. The centurion off the first innings goes without scoring here.

Shoaib Bashir to Athanaze, out Caught by Root!! Shoaib Bashir on fire, West Indies are terrified!! A lovely delivery, an off spinner's delight. 23.2
Mark Wood to Kevin Sinclair, out Caught by Crawley!! A snorter of a delivery from Mark Wood. Too brutal for a bowling all rounder like Sinclair to face. Back of length and shoots up devilishly off the deck. Angles in sharply as well as Sinclair was looking to fend it away. Flies off the wrist band of the gloves and towards Crawley at second slip. A painful way to end his vigil.

Bashir is a Frontline bowler Sinclair isn't, Sinclair is not bowling to WI but England. We lost the test on thev1st day and not getting 500 yesterday. By the way I didn't see that bouncer hitting his glove band (wrist) but above

dayne 2024-07-21 16:55:26

Why are people being hard on Sinclair, it is not easy for WI spinners to bowl in England on their first visit, the only Test Cornwall played there he did not even get a wicket. Sinclair is a good spinner in any format, he needs time to adjust.

Let's blame this 2nd inning batting disaster on McKenzie who keeled over and died at the #3 position. He'll certainly be replaced for the 3rd and final test.

Upon the replacement of the Head Coach by $ammy for the next test series, there'll be no more Yandies left in place to continue our embarrassment.

Cricket_101 2024-07-21 17:38:37

Stopped watching after Holder’s demised…
Great holistical first inning effort, but the 2nd was a disaster with bat and ball…
Let's see what the 3rd test yields.

dayne 2024-07-21 17:44:13

What a sheepish collapse, they all went in one session, very rare in a Test match

Narper 2024-07-21 17:46:38

PLAYER OF THE MATCH
Ollie Pope

Ollie Pope:
Stokes snuck off and we got a couple of wickets. I was keen to keep him out a little longer then. We saw it last night, it nipped a bit and Brook and Root did brilliantly. That's how it is in Test matches, we need to make the most of situation. Feel really good about where my game is at at the moment.

Narper 2024-07-21 17:47:26

K Brathwaite:
K Brathwaite: Decently happy, could have been better with the ball. Probably 100 runs too many conceded specially square of the wicket. With the bat, we were good in the first innings but we weren't up to the mark today. You see the efforts the guys have, so we have the fitness but we need to show better discipline. The guys will learn. We need to stay mentally tough and learn from this for future Test matches. We did agree we dropped a few crucial catches. However, what we can control is our line and length, and true that catches win matches at the end of the day. We weren't expecting it after a decent start, but it is history now and we need to look for the future. We need to stay mentally tough and we have a number of Test matches remaining this year. I don't think so

Narper 2024-07-21 18:04:03

Ben Stokes:
Amazing, the comeback we showed after the opening partnership was remarkable. Bash showed the world what he is about on a wicket that wasn't offering too much to spin. (On the collective performance) In team sport, you want a few individuals to stand up. What shouldn't get lost in all this is that partnership between Brook and Root last night when the ball was swinging. We played today again and if we are being brutally honest, we could have got more in the first innings. Nevertheless, chasing 380 odd in the 4th innings is never easy. (Any changes in the Bazball approach?) This week has been great for the progression as a team and as individuals.

Ben Duckett in the second innings was a good example, they changed their plans for him but he still stuck to his strengths and got runs. Duckett is at his best when he is putting pressure on the opposition. Root was dependable as usual and Brook just got the house down with his knock. (On Mark Wood) I think he hasn't got the rewards this game, but look at the amount of wickets Woakes got from the other end. He was bowling his heart out bowl after ball, and his pace is phenomenal and to consistently hit the right areas is remarkable. I'm sure he'll get his rewards later on. (On Woakes) Woakes found his rhytmn on Day 2 and stuck to his guns. He changed the game today with that first wicket. Coming into this game with the external noise of leading the attack didn't phase him, he is our Mr Dependable.

That shows the mentality of WI cricket. There is nothing to be “Decently happy” about!

I cannot argue with you guys, if a player doesn’t seize the opportunity, then he is at risk for being dropped but selectors might give McKenzie another chance, considering that he shouldered the batting against Australia. If we drop every player who fails every test, then we would have no players left for the future matches.
