Strategically changing cricket balls...

when nothing is happening seems to be a thing among some cricketing nations. I have seen Australian and, in recent times, English teams do it. I have not seen our teams use this as much. I cannot recall a challenging period during a test match when we asked the umpires to change the ball. We have to get with the time; sometimes these small things can change the team's fortunes. I am not saying we should not play the game in the true spirit but I have just noticed that we are sometimes not as situationally aware as some other teams are.

Good point! Stokes doing this all the freakin time. What i would say too is that the batsmen at the crease need to be more assertive and question why the ball is being changed.

Aren't there protocols for changing the ball?

Ie. lost, out of shape, seams bursting etc?

And? First question you should ask yourself is: Do batsmen have any say in a decision about changing the ball?

I dont disagree. My point was that I do not see our team being as astute to use this to our advantage. As I said, I cannot recall the captain requesting the umpires examine the ball or even ask whether it can be changed if it is out of shape.

From Cricinfo: Vinay : "I don't remember balls being changed this often in test matches. Is this specific only to this test or is it a common occurrence in England?" There was a dodgy batch a couple of years ago. This may be the remnant of them!

I thought the Dukes ball (which they are using in England) was a more robust ball than the Kookaburra?

Ie. less prone to the seems bursting or getting out of shape easily.

Maybe it's a problem with the Dukes?
