mikesiva 2024-07-26 09:52:29

10.30am: West Indies win the toss and bat, Kraigg Brathwaite reckons "the pitch looks a good one. We've got to believe and work hard." Shamar takes his place in the XI, which just features one change, Motie coming in for the crocked Sinclair.

Kraigg hits the first boundary of the day....

WI 13-0

Brathwaite 13*
Louis 0*

Good analysis by Mark Butcher of Louis's lack of a backfoot game.

Work to be done before the Test series against South Africa.

Finally off the mark....

WI 16-0
Brathwaite 14*
Louis 2*

Totally agree!

It worries me that these youngsters are being thrown in at the deep end....

Lovely drive down the ground for four by Kraigg!

And another through extra cover.

Louis gets his first boundary...I hope the youngster keeps his concentration, and goes beyond the 20s today.

It's a bit cloudy, but fairly warm weather, so should offer something for both the batsmen and the bowlers.

hubert 2024-07-26 11:00:33

In reply to mikesiva

Yes good analysis by Butcher re Louis. The young man is a predominant front foot
player as of now and he bats well outside crease too. His backfoot play will develop with more
experience. He just needs to put value on his wicket for now and builds his game.
No young player is a finished product...Coaches need to work with Louis and others
whose weaknesses are easily exposed at this level and against top class bowlers.

It is mental. They can score runs against anyone but they need to develop a mindset where they have much more discipline. Until then, it is a continued story of talent unfulfilled.

LBW375 2024-07-26 12:09:22

WI fans like to pile on Kraigg Brathwaite, calm him paint, etc

Man is a warrior tho, stand up and bat

velo 2024-07-26 12:13:47

In reply to LBW375

I would take him and his 12 test centuries over any of these flash in the pan batsmen that look more attractive to the eye but cant mek even 20 against quality bowling

4REALQUICKS 2024-07-26 12:17:25

In reply to velo

I wish half of them had half his determination and concentration skills...West Indies batting would be in a much better state. Overall, they are young and very inexperienced so hopefully, time will prove beneficial in the learning process. There is a long way to go.

Mark Wood to Brathwaite, out Caught by Jamie Smith!! Jamie Smith holds on for dear life! Disappointment for Brathwaite as he falls after a good start once again. He gets past 50 this time but can't turn it into a big one.

Woakes to Kavem Hodge, out Bowled!! He's left a straight one! Oh he won't be looking at the replays of that anytime soon. Superb setup from Woakes though. He'd bowled outswingers all over in the last one, Hodge thought he had another one coming as it was in the channel, only this time it was the wobble-seam delivery and it cut back in off deck. Hodge watched it crash into the top of off-stump.

Kavem Hodge b Woakes 13(11) [4s-2]

WIForever 2024-07-26 13:00:37

This fight Kraig talks about is a load of crap. I see nothing but poor decision making in all 3 tests so far.
Any swing or seam, we struggle.

4REALQUICKS 2024-07-26 13:01:23

From 76/0 to 115/5

Sadly, all too familiar. They have scored at a decent rate, not been under too much pressure but they lack it between the ears...no discipline, Brathwaite aside lacking in focus.

Not sure if they understand that scoring at a decent rate counts for nothing if you lose with days to spare

Stuart Broad in the commentary box:
The criticism of WI is the lack of thought process close to the End of sessions and breaks. It is poor to lose 3 wickets in the last few overs before day 1.

Essentially they undid the hard work they put in for 1 hr and 45 mins

35.3
Woakes to Joshua Da Silva, no run, review lost, Joshua Da Silva got into trouble here, was a short of length delivery that just skidded through, was stuck to his crease looking to pull and it wasn't short enough, bat came around and across, got nowhere near the ball as it smashed into the pad just above the knee-roll, ball-tracker shows it did too much though and it would've gone down leg

Drapsey 2024-07-26 13:28:16

In reply to Acid

Left alone and bowled

Mid stump at that.

This must be a record.

Acid 2024-07-26 13:37:33

In reply to Drapsey

With the balls swinging so much you have to play with bat and pad close

They are playing down the line of the ball but the lack of experience playing swing shows. That’s why if you are going to England, the camp should have gone a month earlier and played 3 practice matches not a rushed 3 day match a few days before the 1st Test

Indeed. Just as batsmen need to work on their focus, so do the bowling attack as a unit. Shamar looks better in each spell, only that pace is still a bit short of where it should be. Once he gets a bit fitter, hopefully during the South Africa series we will see him back to his peak. Seales was impressive again and is having another good series. Alzarri Joseph has a serious issue, it is plain for all to see. His action, approach & skill set are all fine...but that mental concentration is clearly lacking. Holder has been very disappointing with the ball. Motie looks a threat, hopefully they get control again after lunch.

And if only the umpire had given Root out...England would be serious trouble, instead...the momentum is slowly leaving the tourists...

I cannot be upset with Da Silva and Seales, to the eye that ball looked to be going down leg. Just an unlucky one...against one of the game's all time greats sad

Motie to Root, out Lbw!! Root turns and walks! Huge wicket for the West Indies and Motie has got Root for the second time in the series. In similar fashion too, it was floated up full on on middle, just went on with the arm and didn't turn as Root pressed forward to defend, beat the inside edge and hit him pretty dead in front.

Shamar Joseph to Jamie Smith, out Bowled!! Hands on the back of the head for skipper Stokes. Probably sums up the mood in the dressing room. Jamie Smith deserved a maiden hundred, but he will have to walk back. Tries his best not to show any emotion, but there's plenty of it in the dressing room as they rise and applaud what has been a phenomenal knock from the Surrey man. Off-cutter angled in from a length outside off, kept really low and snuck past the under edge on the attempted pull

Good length delivery on off-stump, angles in and shapes away, squared him up completely and there was enough movement to beat the outside edge before going on to hit the top of off-stump. Good length delivery just outside off, zipping through at pace and Kirk McKenzie just hung his bat out to dry. Fired in fast and straight on middle, Mikyle Louis got well forward and his pad got in the way as it angled in, bat couldn't come around in time and it hit him just above the boot. There was a massive appeal and it was turned down, nothing on UltraEdge, ball-tracker shows it would've hit leg-stump on umpire's call! Mikyle Louis had lost his balance, fallen over and thrown his bat away by the time he was done playing that

Alzarri has regressed. Can’t remember an experienced player bowling almost 20 overs and going for close to 7 runs/over and this is when you had the opposition 50-something for 5 at one point.

Seems as if he is trying to bowl 2 fast and his control is slipping from middle to leg side. I hope the coaches are showing him videos of his line and length

Test matches are finishing with days to spare so they should have ample time to watch videos.

Jason Holder
Kirk McKenzie

Can't cuss Kirk much, being tossed into test cricket with his FC record is ridiculous. 1 ton and 28 average

Jason Holder should be producing a lot more. More wickets, more runs

I ain't bashing Alzaari much, he has the goods, lack proper coaching ??

I like Louis, only 9 FC matches, want to see him up the ante in the next FC season. Hodge is a serious player and hopefully will improve. Hope the ton wet his appetite for wanting more

Holder did fairly well with the bat, agreed he’d have taken a few wickets - but in the big picture, we played three seamers in which didn’t performed well… Shamar is game rusty, but Seales and Aj performed poorly
