WI vs Eng, Final Test, Edgbaston
10.30am: West Indies win the toss and bat, Kraigg Brathwaite reckons "the pitch looks a good one. We've got to believe and work hard." Shamar takes his place in the XI, which just features one change, Motie coming in for the crocked Sinclair.

Good analysis by Mark Butcher of Louis's lack of a backfoot game.
Work to be done before the Test series against South Africa.
Finally off the mark....

That should have been identified before he got into test cricket if wi had a proper cricket structure

It worries me that these youngsters are being thrown in at the deep end....
Lovely drive down the ground for four by Kraigg!
And another through extra cover.

Good morning!
Louis gets his first boundary...I hope the youngster keeps his concentration, and goes beyond the 20s today.
It's a bit cloudy, but fairly warm weather, so should offer something for both the batsmen and the bowlers.

Hi there
Edgbaston, the best cricket ground ,to me in England.
In reply to mikesiva
Yes good analysis by Butcher re Louis. The young man is a predominant front foot
player as of now and he bats well outside crease too. His backfoot play will develop with more
experience. He just needs to put value on his wicket for now and builds his game.
No young player is a finished product...Coaches need to work with Louis and others
whose weaknesses are easily exposed at this level and against top class bowlers.

In reply to CCW
True but some better players would not be thinking attack minutes to lunch.

In reply to mikesiva
Don’t know how WI has the knack for losing wickets in groups - 3 wickets in less than 4 overs 15 mins just before lunch
75/0 to 97/3
Don’t they understand how to play out a session?
In reply to Chrissy
From WI win toss and batted...I called out from my voluntary job.
Now I am ticked off with loss of 3 wickets..won't be a good day for me.
In reply to Acid
It is mental. They can score runs against anyone but they need to develop a mindset where they have much more discipline. Until then, it is a continued story of talent unfulfilled.
WI fans like to pile on Kraigg Brathwaite, calm him paint, etc
Man is a warrior tho, stand up and bat
In reply to LBW375
I would take him and his 12 test centuries over any of these flash in the pan batsmen that look more attractive to the eye but cant mek even 20 against quality bowling
In reply to velo
I wish half of them had half his determination and concentration skills...West Indies batting would be in a much better state. Overall, they are young and very inexperienced so hopefully, time will prove beneficial in the learning process. There is a long way to go.

Woakes to Kavem Hodge, out Bowled!! He's left a straight one! Oh he won't be looking at the replays of that anytime soon. Superb setup from Woakes though. He'd bowled outswingers all over in the last one, Hodge thought he had another one coming as it was in the channel, only this time it was the wobble-seam delivery and it cut back in off deck. Hodge watched it crash into the top of off-stump.
Kavem Hodge b Woakes 13(11) [4s-2]
This fight Kraig talks about is a load of crap. I see nothing but poor decision making in all 3 tests so far.
Any swing or seam, we struggle.

Sadly, all too familiar. They have scored at a decent rate, not been under too much pressure but they lack it between the ears...no discipline, Brathwaite aside lacking in focus.

Not sure if they understand that scoring at a decent rate counts for nothing if you lose with days to spare

35.3
Woakes to Joshua Da Silva, no run, review lost, Joshua Da Silva got into trouble here, was a short of length delivery that just skidded through, was stuck to his crease looking to pull and it wasn't short enough, bat came around and across, got nowhere near the ball as it smashed into the pad just above the knee-roll, ball-tracker shows it did too much though and it would've gone down leg
In reply to Acid
Mid stump at that.
This must be a record.
In reply to Drapsey
With the balls swinging so much you have to play with bat and pad close
They are playing down the line of the ball but the lack of experience playing swing shows. That’s why if you are going to England, the camp should have gone a month earlier and played 3 practice matches not a rushed 3 day match a few days before the 1st Test

Shamar looks better than Kirk with the bat.
So far he has made twice the number of runs than Kirk in this series and counting.
It's a decent score, hopefully they bowl well. For the next series against South Africa, some middle order changes should be done, they cannot be getting fifty plus runs opening partnerships then collapsing.
Not a two-day test for sure.

They have a special "Blue for Bob" day at the ground, raising awareness and donations for a charity related to prostate cancer, which took the life of England's Bob Willis in 2019. Spectators wear blue, players too.
In reply to Chrissy
Indeed. Just as batsmen need to work on their focus, so do the bowling attack as a unit. Shamar looks better in each spell, only that pace is still a bit short of where it should be. Once he gets a bit fitter, hopefully during the South Africa series we will see him back to his peak. Seales was impressive again and is having another good series. Alzarri Joseph has a serious issue, it is plain for all to see. His action, approach & skill set are all fine...but that mental concentration is clearly lacking. Holder has been very disappointing with the ball. Motie looks a threat, hopefully they get control again after lunch.
And if only the umpire had given Root out...England would be serious trouble, instead...the momentum is slowly leaving the tourists...
I cannot be upset with Da Silva and Seales, to the eye that ball looked to be going down leg. Just an unlucky one...against one of the game's all time greats

Shamar Joseph to Jamie Smith, out Bowled!! Hands on the back of the head for skipper Stokes. Probably sums up the mood in the dressing room. Jamie Smith deserved a maiden hundred, but he will have to walk back. Tries his best not to show any emotion, but there's plenty of it in the dressing room as they rise and applaud what has been a phenomenal knock from the Surrey man. Alzarri has regressed. Can’t remember an experienced player bowling almost 20 overs and going for close to 7 runs/over and this is when you had the opposition 50-something for 5 at one point.
Seems as if he is trying to bowl 2 fast and his control is slipping from middle to leg side. I hope the coaches are showing him videos of his line and length
Test matches are finishing with days to spare so they should have ample time to watch videos.

Dis - after a good 57 - bad habit
In reply to Chrissy
A real real bad habit. Man won't leave those balls out there alone. Is like they calling he name out there he needs to learn to ignore them
In reply to positiveg
it's not habit in the habit sense
it's skill deficiency
he has to work on it and i hope CWI can get him the appropriate help to improve on that
In reply to mikesiva
Pity!
Did the hard work for 90 mins of the session and needed focus for the last half hour - this is the critical period in a session when WI tend to lose their way.
Luck for Holder with a dropped catch - keep the focus, Lunch is close.
50 for Hodge and 50 lead

In reply to doosra
Was it as bad as athanaze sweeping a ball on middle stump
In reply to velo
that was a bad choice as well
In reply to doosra
Bad decision I thought

If we could get 120 more somehow I would give us a shot

Need a shamar miracle again
Thought they might have sent in Shamar ahead of Alzarri
Playing across the line Josh. Play straight.
In reply to WIForever
i don't understand it
why keep trying to whip to midwicket or square leg
at least until the reverse is off

Mark Wood to Jayden Seales, out Bowled!! Push him back and rip the stumps out next ball! Just two stumps left standing after that, Mark Wood is unstoppable, he's got 4 wickets in his last 6 overs.
Jayden Seales b Mark Wood 0(3)
51.5
Mark Wood to Shamar Joseph, FOUR, to deep backward point
gawn

Mark Wood to Shamar Joseph, out Caught by Harry Brook!! A fifer for Wood and they've all come after lunch! What a spell of fast bowling! He switched to round the wicket for this one, pitched it up full outside off, enticed the drive and Shamar Joseph went at it with all hands, just enough shape away again to catch a healthy outside edge and Brook took a good catch diving to his right at second slip. Mark Wood, take a bow!
Shamar Joseph c Harry Brook b Mark Wood 4(2) [4s-1]

Too much to ask. Folks here have it in for Zari
New Test Rankings. WI dropped to last place and England displaced WI from the 6th spot:
1. India
2. Australia
3. NZ
4. SL
5. Pakistan
6. England
7. SA
8. Bangladesh
9. WI
2 biggest disappointment
Jason Holder
Kirk McKenzie
Can't cuss Kirk much, being tossed into test cricket with his FC record is ridiculous. 1 ton and 28 average
Jason Holder should be producing a lot more. More wickets, more runs
I ain't bashing Alzaari much, he has the goods, lack proper coaching ??
I like Louis, only 9 FC matches, want to see him up the ante in the next FC season. Hodge is a serious player and hopefully will improve. Hope the ton wet his appetite for wanting more
In reply to LBW375
Holder did fairly well with the bat, agreed he’d have taken a few wickets - but in the big picture, we played three seamers in which didn’t performed well… Shamar is game rusty, but Seales and Aj performed poorly
