where the men's Test series between West Indies and South Africa starts on Wednesday (August 7), has been good to the visitors. Daryll Cullinan scored 103 there in a 69-run win in March 2001. The visitors won by eight wickets in April 2005, when Makhaya Ntini took 6/95 and 7/37 and Graeme Smith scored 148 to blunt Brian Lara's 196. Nobody made a century in June 2010, not least because Dale Steyn claimed 5/29 and 3/65. South Africa won by 163 runs.
South Africa have won the toss and have opted to bat
Leh we go West Indies
In reply to Chrissy
Let's Go team I would hope we would of gotten the chance to bat first. I'm not too sure of our bowling attack.
Still though let's go team
In reply to Narper
The West Indies line up looks a batsman short, with Holder batting at six.
The Saffer line up looks a bowler short, with Mulder batting at eight.
Neither side looks balanced.

Holder to Markram, out Bowled!! Holder strikes first ball! Markram is cleaned up and left looking clueless. That was a lovely delivery, on a length and just outside off, nipped back in sharply off the deck. Markram was rooted to his crease, neither forward nor back and he left a big gap between bat-pad, the ball rushed through to hit the top of off-stump and uprooted it.

It is amazing the Charles was selected and then did not make the final eleven for the match being played on his home ground. If Warrican gets some wickets Charles would not be playing in this series. Congrats to Carty, welcome to Test cricket.

The rain has stopped, but there's a lot of puddles around on the outfield. The groundstaff are using two rollers to try and absorb as much water as possible on the outfield. It was a sharp shower and it has left several damp patches on the uncovered areas. Lot of work to do for the staff, but with lunch approaching, they might have enough time to get the ground ready after the official break. We'll be back in 30 minutes with hopefully some positive news
Inspection at 14:00 local. Live visuals show the covers are on and gloomy skies overhead. Nothing but waiting at the moment.
Rain has stopped. It has gotten brighter and some covers are being removed. So some positive news.
Frustrating! Covers back on. That kind of a day.
Don't expect play to restart today.
The inspection was supposed to happen at 14:00 local but it has started to rain again. So the inspection understandably is delayed.

Awrite, if you come down Tunapuna side, lemme know.
It is raining heavily right now. Fair to say that we won't get any play in this session.
Hope tomorrow weather-wise we get more play. The forecast is for much better weather. On that note we take leave, we will see you tomorrow. Take care till then
.
14:48 Local Time, 18:48 GMT, 00:18 IST: That's it, it's stumps. Rain has had the final say. The forecast was for rain and it has arrived to disrupt the day. In whatever play that was possible today, Markram got a good ball, till then he was looking good. de Zorzi, as soon as Motie came on took the attack to him and smashed him for two sixes. That was the highlight of the day. Just 15 overs were bowled when the heavens opened up.
Lunch was taken and rain did not relent after that as well. Finally just before the scheduled tea break, the umpires decided to call it off as conditions were not fit for play

Roach to Tristan Stubbs, out Caught by Holder!! Soft hands from Holder and Roach has broken through on the second morning - on a good length and in that channel just outside off, the length drew Stubbs into the defensive push, but the ball held its line and found the outside edge. Holder dives across to his left and in front of first slip as he snaffles a good two-handed catch, don't think it'd have carried to 1st slip, that makes the effort from the big man more impressive.

Warrican to de Zorzi, out Caught by Kavem Hodge!! Tony de Zorzi has thrown it away! Oh dear, all that hardwork and he's gone. Was floated up full just outside off, de Zorzi leant in looking to reverse-sweep, got his hands low and the ball just held up a shade to take the glove. Went straight to first slip and Hodge did the rest. He'll be terribly disappointed with that, three figures were there for the taking.

Jayden Seales to Bavuma, 1 run, Hodge at square leg is very close in and that flicked the end of this fingers. Tipped it over the bar. Short outside off, Bavuma controls the pull but still can't keep it down. Would be very harsh to call it a drop

63.4
Jayden Seales to Bedingham, out Caught by Keacy Carty!! Yet again Bedingham throws it away. He has this penchant for playing flamboyant shots and this costs him. A short delivery outside off, two men were there for the pull, he pulls but hits it flat and towards deep square leg, Carty dives forward and has the fingers under the ball as he completes the catch and rolls over. The ploy works and that's a superb catch. First wicket for Jayden Seales at his homeground

Holder to Bavuma, FOUR, 50 for Bavuma. Full and sliding down leg, flicked away to the fine-leg fence, easy for Bavuma and he raises the bat to acknowledge the modicum of applause around the Queen's Park Oval
67.6
Holder to Bavuma, FOUR, poor over this. Another floaty half-volley outside off, Bavuma thumps the drive and beats cover on the dive to his left, no pace and that was very gentle stuff all over from Holder

Warrican to Rickelton, 1 run, dropped by Warrican. That is a sitter. Maybe Warrican did not expect that to come back to him. Roach to Rickelton, out Lbw!! Rickelton has been given OUT LBW. Looked pretty adjacent, but will he review? Has a chat with his partner and he's on his way Excellent start after the break for the hosts, Roach has struck with the 2nd new ball - on a good length and nipping back into the right-hander, Rickelton was caught in the crease and played all around it, struck just above the knee-roll, the impact was in front of middle and it would haqve crashed at least into the leg-stump.

Jayden Seales to Verreynne, no ball, that's a shocking beamer, must've slipped out of his hands - Verreynne does well to duck down, buut he still cops a blow as the ball smashes into his fore-arm, an immediate apology from the bowler
Verreynne is getting some treatment and we'll have a break in play. An ice-pack is being applied, but the good thing is that Verreynne ain't flinching

84.3
Roach to Verreynne, FOUR, cracking shot, banged in short and at the right-hander, Verreynne swivels across, gets on top of the bounce and then pulls it over square leg for a boundary
Umpires call loud stewwwwwps
85.6
Holder to Bavuma, no run, a loud shout for LBW? Given as NOT OUT, was it too high? West Indies have reviewed. The nip-backer and Bavuma was beaten on the inside edge, he wasn't too far forward either, daylight between bat and ball - onto ball-tracking: It's umpire's call on hitting, trimming the leg-stump and Bavuma will survive, a close shout though. Was pitched up and Bavuma played down the wrong line as he pressed forward, struck above the knee-roll
86.3
Roach to Verreynne, FOUR, edged and four, but Verreynne was in control over the shot, played with soft hands and ran it backward of square on the off-side for a boundary

Jayden Seales to Bavuma, out Lbw!! That's OUT, that's plumb and Bavuma is ready to walk off, but Verreynne walks up to him and he reluctantly reviews. Was a full-toss that dropped onto the right-hander and Bavuma was undone by the trajectory, was looking to tuck it onto the on-side, but the ball curled past the edge and crashed into the back-pad, right in front of off-stump. One replay and Bavuma walks off, ball-tracking returns three reds, the ball crashing into the off-stump and South Africa have lost their captain.
Bavuma lbw b Jayden Seales 86(182) [4s-7 6s-1]

Maharaj to Mikyle Louis, out Bowled!! Oh dear! All the hard work and Louis has been dismissed off the last ball before lunch - was the arm-ball from Maharaj, it kept coming back into the right-hander, Louis was playing for the turn as he lunged forward, ended up leaving a big gap between bat and pad, enough for the ball to sneak through and crash into the middle-stump. Lunch will sound a lot sweeter for the visitors, not so for Maharaj and his father who looks aghast in the stands.

Threat of rain.....covers coming on ...
Uh-oh! Bad news. Just as we were ready for play in the second session, covers are coming on. There will be a delay. The big cover is being brought on too - which means that a heavy shower is on the way. Dark clouds hang ominously in the background
Just 105 more runs to save the follow-on. That's the first milestone.

Ngidi to Brathwaite, no ball, out Brathwaite Run Out!! A direct hit at the bowler's end, but South Africa ain't really celebrating - Brathwaite looks calm and he thinks he's beaten the throw. Oh no, he's a bit lazy in sliding the bat in, it's just short of the crease when the stumps are broken and OUT is the call. That's shocking from the West Indian captain - poor application and he's wasted away a start. What's more, that'll be the last bit of action for a while. Rain has come sweeping and the groundstaff are quick to bring in the covers. Was a full ball and it was clipped to the right of mid-on - Mulder was quick to get across and throws down the stumps at the bowler's end, catching Brathwaite just short. There were no real celebrations, but South Africa are chuffed to bits when the final decision came up on the screen.

You cam tell he don't play the short format much. Such a lazy way to out his bat across the line.
What a disgrace, unforgivable . Lazy and nothing else
Nonsensical
Why do WI batsmen lose concentration as we approach the end of a session?
Brathwaite runs himself out with a half-hearted final stride and without extending the bat. Terrible error and the West Indies, who lost their first wicket with the last ball before lunch, lose their second with the last ball before another break for rain and tea. The ball was actually a no ball but the run out stands.
Tea, Day Three

A consistent factor throughout the match thus far. Wickets only fall when the batsman loses concentration and plays a poor stroke, or in Brathwaite's case, makes a poor decision.
If you maintain focus and stick to the basics, you will score runs. Big runs.
And that was a no-ball as well

Nothing better than test cricket
Lot of target bowling. Nice to get back into Test cricket. I enjoy the repetition. (On the rain) The ball gets wet when it goes into the outfield. The seam becomes slippery and doesn’t react as much. We try and keep it as dry as possible. There’s not much off the wicket. Tried to use variations in pace. The odd ball reacts, we really tried to hold the channel. The West Indies side batted well and consolidated but we know wickets can fall in clusters.

With this match heading to an inevitable draw I hope Hodge, Holder and DaSilva (when he gets to bat) just bat and bat and bat (Like Logie’s advice as Head Coach to Jamaica in the 2011 Busta Cup semi vs T&T when they batted for 660+ runs on over 200 overs to force a no result and qualify for the final).
No need to rush - get some valuable time in the middle and a good score.
As expected, the forecast and adverse weather alert have been verified, with strong thunderstorms currently affecting portions of Eastern and Northern Trinidad, after earlier affecting parts of South and Central Trinidad.
Gusty winds, heavy to violent rainfall rates, and street or flash flooding are likely in areas prone, as this activity continues to move north to northwest.
The Adverse Weather Alert remains in effect through 4 PM today.
It's still raining, it's not heavy but it's enough to keep everyone away from the ground. 'The drizzle is constant, but it's not a heavy downpour', says Ian Bishop. If it does stop raining, they can get this ground ready in an hour for play to resume

Absolutely. They need to wake up and get their feet moving. Against spin, it is the same issue all the time. Warrican said at the close of day two that the wicket was "flat, VERY flat" and he was not wrong. That pitch holds no demons. South Africa have a good attack, no doubt about it but the experienced players Brathwaite, Holder and Da Silva all set shocking examples to the youngsters in the team by playing terrible strokes or, in the captain's case, making a poor call and not doing the basics of grounding the bat when running into the danger end.
Basic errors, basic.
At 114/1, they would have been talking about building a lead on first innings. The only thing they built from that position of strength was pressure, on themselves. Move your feet and you negate the moving ball. They need to learn & learn fast.
Game on.

If SA score another 75 runs runs between 9:30am to 11am for a Target of 230-ish, WI will be hard pressed to save this match with fielders all close to the batsmen.
The Saffies can declare by lunch tomorrow. Whatever that score is, WI will struggle to get through the day.
Anyway, we can celebrate the fact that the match is actually going into the 5th day.

If it wasn’t for that it would almost be like going into day 3. Nothing to be proud off from a WI perspective
Day 5
The sun is out today and the players are warming up. We should have a prompt start..
We could get rain later in the day. As we look closer, you can see the cracks opening up. I don't think that's going to come into play. Batting is going to be slightly easier on day five. It's about patience today.
This morning, we got to start well. We think South Africa are going to push for it. We'll try to be disciplined. We'll try to bowl them out to get ourselves back in the game. (On Seales) He has been good, coming back into the team after an injury, he's bowling in good areas and at high pace. He has a big future ahead of him, I love his aggression.

13.2
Motie to de Zorzi, FOUR, 87.2kph, flighted outside off, with a good stride forward, de Zorzi negates the spin and drives neatly through the covers. Eye-pleasing stroke

About 20 mins batting to lunch
West Indies will have to negotiate a potentially uncomfortable session prior to lunch. South Africa declared at the fall of their third wicket, Tristan Stubbs being the man to go, bowled by Roach for a quickfire 68 off 50 balls. It was his maiden test 50.
As it stands...
SA 357 (Bavuma 86, de Zorzi 78, Mulder 41*, Warrican 4/69, Seales 3/67) & 173/3 declared (Stubbs 68, de Zorzi 45)
WI 233 (Carty 42, Maharaj 4/76, Rabada 3/56)
West Indies require 298 runs to win.
Grey clouds are gathering to the East of the QPO...perhaps rain will have the final say. I would rather see the home side show some mettle and fight it out.
Brathwaite and Mikyle Louis are at the crease.
Brathwaite is on strike.
Maharaj will open the attack
PAIN gawn forr a BLOB !!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!
0.3
Maharaj to Brathwaite, out Caught by Tristan Stubbs!! Oh dear! This is so terrible from Brathwaite, he's the rock of this batting line-up anmd he's simply tossed his wicket away - rush of blood as he came running down the pitch, Maharaj slowed down the pace and got the ball to turn, having been beaten in the flight,. Brathwaite still went fore the big shot, slicing a thick edge and Stubbs does the rest, back-pedalling from cover
Brathwaite c Tristan Stubbs b Maharaj 0(3)
Worst shot ever by a test captain. Has he had enough of it all..?
Stupidity by Brathwaite. What a horrible shot when you are trying to save a match. Reckless

Maharaj to Mikyle Louis, FOUR, beautifully played, Maharaj drifts one very full and at the pads, Louis gets well forward and then drives it through the gap wide of mid-on, races away to the ropes
2.4
Maharaj to Mikyle Louis, FOUR, back-to-back boundaries, but not sure if this is needed from the West Indies - flighted delivery on off , Louis pressed forward and then lofted the drive over cover, there's a man in the deep, but he's very square and the ball bounces away

Who knows they might be going for the win
That shot ain’t going to win you anything
Are they going for the win..?
3.1
Rabada to Keacy Carty, no run, is there an inside edge? KG ain't interested and SA don't review, short of a length and angling bacvk into the right-hander, Carty was shaping for the pull and missed, came off the thigh-pad and lobbed into Markram's hands at first slip
3.3
Rabada to Keacy Carty, no run
Another appeal for LBW, and this time SA have reviewed., Did look slightly high, but with weather closing, they've taken a chance. Was the nip-backewr and Carty was caught in the crease, beaten on the inside edge and struck him above the knee-roll, on the back-pad. The impact is in front of off, but it's only umpire's call on hitting the stumps. Stays NOT OUT and Carty will survive
Rain comes as Carty survives that review
11:55 Local Time, 15:55 GMT, 21:25 IST:
That'll be the last bit of action for a while. Rain has swept in and the covers have been called. They'll take lunch and will hope to get back onto the ground in 40 minutes time.

Yes
Better news this time. The covers are coming off. Looks like the rain has stopped. The sun is actually out now. We should get play started before long. The umpires are out there taking a look at conditions. Might take them 30 minutes or so to get things ready.
Looks like all the covers have now been removed.

7.6
Rabada to Mikyle Louis, out Caught by Tristan Stubbs!! In the air and gone! South Africa are off and running after lunch! Back of a length delivery on middle, Mikyle Louis was caught in an awkward position trying to pull - neither forward nor fully back. He was also a touch cramped for room and it took the top-edge before going up. Stubbs settled under it at mid-wicket and took it easily.
Mikyle Louis c Tristan Stubbs b Rabada 9(25) [4s-2]

16.5
Maharaj to Keacy Carty, out Caught by Wiaan Mulder!! That's a stunning catch! Keacy Carty drags himself off, he's thrown it away. Length delivery on off-stump, just held in the surface a touch as Keacy Carty punched it off the backfoot, that meant it went in the air towards Mulder at cover. He did brilliantly there, lunged forward and got his fingers right under it before scooping it up. A third wicket goes down for the West Indies. South Africa's odds keep improving!

Maharaj to Athanaze, out Caught by Rickelton!! Heartbreak for Athanaze! He was desperate to get to three-figures and he falls short. South Africa set the trap and Athanaze fell for it. Length delivery on off-stump, he'd been sweeping all day and he goes for another one. Didn't keep this down and it went straight to Rickelton who'd been placed at backward square leg exactly for this type of shot. That was bowled a touch quicker too.

Pride myself in Test cricket. Always ready to bowl. Was happy and just soldiered through Try and read conditions and see how I can get the best assistance. Then I try and keep it simple with my lines and lengths. Full credit to Athanaze, I just stuck to my guns, varied the lengths a bit and got the result.
We tried our best from our side. Just wasn't enough time in the end. Wicket didn't break up as much as we expected as well. The elements got the better of a good competitive game of cricket. Went with an extra batter to cushion our inexperience. We'd like to be more ruthless as batters. Guy like Stubbs will take a lot of confidence from a knock like that. Lot of positives. We lost time because of the weather. We'd have liked the wicket to deteriorate a bit more but it didn't. We tried our best with the resources we had. Little bit more time and we could be saying something different. On that wicket, felt like Keshav and KG were best suited to get wickets. The rest of the bowlers did their jobs well. Two guys to attack and the rest to support.
Happy with the intent we had as a batting group. The guys were quite positive. We believed we could get the runs. We knew it wouldn't be easy. We had a gameplan and fully backed it. Liked how Alick (Athanaze) went about it. Keacy as well, fully committed to his plans. We were up for the challenge today. It's a balance. Pitches are always different here, bit slower. There are times when you need to accelerate and times when you need to build a foundation. It's all about belief and planning. It's about believing in the plans. Alick (Athanaze) showed us how to do it and Hodge did it in England. Must commend how he went about his planning and he stuck to it. (On workload management) We'll assess some of the boys when we get to Guyana. We have a 15-man squad. We'll assess how the bowlers are.
