Recall Shai Hope, make him Test captain/Keeper

Casper 2024-08-18 01:39:23

I never understood why he was discarded at Test level. It isn’t as if they were others vastly better than him.

I sure yuh understand why Darren Bravo, averaging 40(only dude in the team to do that) was discarded in 2016 for 3 years.

doosra 2024-08-18 02:07:29

Coach Coley hinted he doh want guys who will be one-offs...

are you committed for the next 12 months...if no, stay away

In reply to Jumpstart

Yes Darren Bravo was and still is by far the best red ball batsman in the region since Shiv retired but unfortunately one man still can't win you many games ask Lara!!!

Unfortunately I think Dave Cameron was actually on the right path in 2014 why we paying people just to lose? Invest into a better system and try to reap some rewards!!!

What these players need to understand is that there is so much fame and money to be made in Test cricket look at Shamar Joseph literally one game winning spell against Australia has put him on a path to being a millionaire!!!

Imagine how much money the board could make on a winning team which could trickle down to the players themselves!!!

Is Shai better than Blackwood?

4REALQUICKS 2024-08-18 13:17:45

In reply to camos

Technically, Shai Hope is a much better player. Unfortunately, he has not been involved in red ball cricket enough through the past few years.

Blackwood started off with a bang and was hailed as the new Viv Richards. Instant pressure and never reached those heights again. Managed to somewhat curb his natural aggressive stroke play during the latter years of his test career and looked like he may be better for it but for somebody with over 140 first class games, he still makes the same wild shots and basic errors. At nearly 33, his ship has probably not only sailed but gone off the edge pf the map. After 56 tests, he barely averaged 30 and scored just three centuries. Watching him scratch around in February / March during the regional red ball championship was actually quite sad. He looked so far removed from the player he once was.

Hope does not boast that dissimilar a test record in that he too started well but quickly faded. His weakness against fast, short pitch bowling soon found him out (a flaw that has since been worked on). In ODI cricket, he remains one of the best in the world. That, makes West Indies fans clamor for his reintroduction into the test side. His last test match action was away to Sri Lanka in late 2021. It was yet another dismal tour for the West Indies, with the only warm up match being abandoned without a ball bowled. The players looked well shy of practice and were undone by the home team who out batted them comfortably in both tests. Hope, along with the rest of the middle order, really struggled.

Hope is 30, younger than Hodge and only 3 years older than Carty. Both Hodge and Carty are better than they were at the age Hope played most of his test cricket for WI. Its not rational to right off a guy who has since grown to become one of the most successful top order 50 over batsmen in the world since his test failure several years ago.

I think some people.are wishing Hope's test demise rather than expecting it

WIfan26 2024-08-18 18:49:46

In reply to Logic

The poster asked why Shai was discarded so I gave him the answer!!!

Now do I believe Shai should be given another chance, absolutely he should!!! There's just no real guarantee he'll do any better especially with teams knowing his game inside out and bowlers won't be restricted to just 10 overs against him!!!

WICFan 2024-08-18 19:16:18

Brandon King should be considered as well.

Jumpstart 2024-08-18 19:38:32

In reply to 4REALQUICKS

Shai hope has two hundreds vs broad and Anderson. Great bowlers, not very aggressive though. Darren Bravo has a double hundred vs southee, boult, Wagner and Matt Henry. He has another hundred against the same attack scored a year later. He has scored a hundred in Australia vs Hazelwood and Pattinson( would have been the best Aussie pacer in a generation if not for injuries). I’m not sure Shai even has a 50 against attack that will consistently feed him a diet of short pitched bowling

I have been saying that for a long time. King is technically better put together than louis

TanteMerle 2024-08-18 23:47:01

Let me share a secret with all ya.
Hope was supposed to be VC in de Ozz tour,
but he declined the tour.

I am not in favor of him being made cappo right away,
but he needs to be in the team.
Chase scored a quick 100 and took 10 wickets in his only red ball game this year,
yet he does not appear to be in the test conversation.

Finally Carty in the team, good for him and us.
Alzarri is not cappo material.
King needs to be the conversation for test.
Pooran needs to be in the conversation for tests.
Shepherd (yes Shepherd) needs to be in conversation for tests.

If Windies get their best players in the squad, then the captainy will work itself out.

BRAFFIT NEEDS TO GO AS CAPPO, and POSSIBLY AS A BATTER.
LET HIM COMPETE FOR A BATTING SPOT.

not good players with technical chinks as glaring as Hope's. Didn't shai out to a short delivery from jansen in the WC. You can be a great white ball player and not be good at tests at all......Sky Yadav, michael bevan, lance klusener etc

another rubbish statement. adam voges was 35 when he made his test debut, played 20 tests and finished with an average over 60. dude played less tests than shai and had more test centuries

TanteMerle 2024-08-19 12:39:15

In reply to Jumpstart

To be fair, one cannot use Ozz as a benchmark.

Lost of great batsmen around a debutant is way better for him.

Windies players play among some of the worst in the game.
Hard management, poor playing conditions home,
no fans, batsmen having to take the field for long periods.

So please do not talk about Voges or even Hussey.

Let's see if he can hold his place just as a batsman before burdening him. I guess that means you are dropping DS. surprised

cumberland 2024-08-19 16:56:18

This thread Bhai! Is the CRICKETER interested in your Test cricket that you can recall him much less make him Capitan and Keeper?

tc1 2024-08-21 01:09:37

In reply to Jumpstart

Here is the fact jumpy Voges played 20 test matches and avg 60, his last 10 innings which is half of his career,
he made 133 runs at a great avg of 13.

Jumpstart 2024-08-21 01:19:27

In reply to tc1

and that is relevant how......shai could only score 2 test hundred in one game and could not lift his average in 38. another interesting stat is that in Voges last ten tests, he only batted 15 times

tc1 2024-08-21 20:43:59

In reply to Jumpstart

The discussion was about Michael Bravo coming back at age 35 and you introduce Voges starting his career at 35 and ending at an avg of 60. you also did not complete the reason why Voges was dropped as he only mustered an 133 runs in his last 10 test matches for an avg of 13.
This is the same progression that Bravo last 17 innings seem to be hurling toward.

Jumpstart 2024-08-21 20:54:36

darren bravo is a quality player whose career, like ramnaresh sarwan's was destroyed by the pig headedness of the hotel managers running wi cricket. given the right management, anybody an come back at 35. Graham gooch was 37 when he scored a triple century and a century in one test vs india. he was 38 hen he played, in my opine, the second best innings ever versus patterson, ambrose and co. In fact, from 1990 to 1995, gooch never averaged below 44, thrice he averaged above 50

You people don't seem to understand that a cricketer is a highly skilled professional. most people have better chances of being doctors, lawyers and engineers than being professional cricketers. it is not like a hotel or resort employee who can be trained to do run of the mill tasks. the team getting battered left right and center but visit antigua, visit st lucia, visit trinidad, visit jamaica. the cricketers are not part of your tourism infrastructure

Which club did you play for in Bim?

I played 'curry goat' leagues manly while in Bim.

I immigrated to Bermuda n my twenties and played for Police in first division.
However, I mainly play what was called commercial league.
There is Premier and first division, which are the two big leagues.
The commercial league was a lower division, with may retired player
and some players who despite their talent, refused to play in the highest league.
At one point the fastest bowler in the islands was playing commercial league.

I played BCL cricket for Sunrises while on vacation in Bim.
I first tried out for Carlton second division team, but could not make the cut due to the timing of my vacation,
although I trained with them.

My desire is for Braffit to be axed as cappo.
Let him compete for a batsman role.

Any cappo with such a poor record (batting and win/loss) deserves to be axed.

He was about to be dropped when he became cappo for the Bangy tour.
Got lucky with the injury to Shakib and the Mayers ton.
Suddenly he became undroppable.

As a cappo, his batting is crap.
His nuances of the game appear non-existent.
He does not inspire confidence.
Handles bowlers very poor, especially Mootie.

I disagree. Definitely a better captain than Holder was. His batting weakness is now known by all and sundry. So unless as THE OPEN MINDED ONE says he comes back stronger.

Holder wasn’t a good captain at all. Comparing Kraigg to him is a comparison of two bad captains

TanteMerle 2024-08-22 09:18:11

In reply to Jumpstart

I agree with you.

Holder was just as bad as Braffit in terms of captaincy.

Holder's personal performances was better, but captaincy was all-uninspiring.

I say , give it to a youth and try a Greame Smith ala RSA.

Burden Athanaze with it. It may bring out the best in him.

camos 2024-08-22 11:07:00

Holder should captain the next series, just to give one of the young guys some more time to make a claim.

Athanaze is not graeme smith who hsd already captained a side at youth level and his place in the side was already secured with two double centuries in his first 11 tests the same amount athanaze has played . time to stop making these ad hoc decisions in wi cricket.holder should have never been given the captaincy either at 25
