The point he is making is that he is trying to avoid the slow starts that are more forgiving when you play a series against a single team. A five game series you can lose badly in the first 2 games and come back and eke out a series win. You can't have that mindset in the worldcup. I can't say what the strategy is to get to that mindset...but its important to win out the gate. That is my interpretation. That 'quote' should not be taken in isolation.
..and to be fair he was captain of two championship winning teams..so he knows something about it.
