Congrats Evin Lewis
In reply to cumberland
Correct
In a 3 match ODI series against Ireland in the Caribbean in 2020, Evin Lewis scored 99 not out in the first match and 102 in the 3rd match
Immediately following that series, the WI selectors met to select the ODI team to tour Sri Lanka in February 2020
They didn’t select Lewis or Hetmeyer because they didn’t pass the fitness test.
The chief selector?? Roger Harper.
Obviously, passing a fitness test is/was deemed to be more important than actual performance.
Priorities eh?
And if Allyuh think I lie…..CHECK IT OUT FOR ALLYUH SELF
That was effectively that for Evin Lewis’ West Indies career
Lewis should be integral part of all format......he has excel in ODI....one of the best in T20 ..... should be encouraged to open in test......
But this administration and management like to promote players........lickers.......

He is 33 now, probably got one more shot at making it back to the team, but the big question is, does he even want it?
Most of these guys look at the CPL and regional 50 over as an audition for other franchises. They've already got what they needed from West Indies, i.e. an exposure to the international stage, and now all they care about is playing for franchises.
while form and fitness are both important, the question is why didn't Lewis work on his fitness like others in the squad did?
Why did he not make the team after the series against Sri Lanka? if he wanted to represent the region so bad, he would have found a way to work his way back into the team
In reply to imusic
If they have a set criteria for selection that they are all aware of, and refuse to adhere to. Then, because a person made 99 runs, we are prepared to bypass the set rules to accommodate them, isn't that setting a bad precedent? Down the road when others refuse to meet the criteria, how would it be justified to leave them out? Sometimes we just have to be big enough to give our youths good advice, to play by the rules. Every setting that we function in are guided by rules and regulations.

Good ton

Sometimes you have to violate the rules - the rules were made for man, and not man for the rules!

alyuh does come of with all sorts of rubbish to argue why your talentless frauds should not be dropped in favor of players who are actually....um....good
In reply to imusic
Congrats indeed. Atleast Polly wasn't there to bowl a wide off the last ball to deny him the century
In reply to googley
Allow me to imagine...Lewis and Narine opening for TT and Pooran at3,I mean TT not TKR
3 cheers for Evin...but, he's a hit or miss cricketer. I could be wrong & get his fans vex, but ah suh mih see it.
In reply to granite
That means fireworks in the stadium.
3 exciting players .
In reply to googley
Watch it pandit....grrrr
...
Mad em Lewis , do your thing, your way.
In reply to granite
Who batting 4 and 6 if Polly is 5? Terrence Hinds??!
In reply to sgtdjones
When I watched Fire in Babylon, they said they included WI in the Kerry Packer World Series knowing they were top players but not winners
Maybe Lewis can entertain but not win as well
In reply to brians_da_best
He looked like he was not fit to you?
In reply to Besar
Let me see if I understand you correctly.
They played Ireland in January 2020. The final match of the 3 match series was played on January 12 2020. That was the match where Lewis scored 102 out of a total of 199 for 5 resulting in a WI win by DL method due to rain interruption.
Lewis was named Man of the Series and also WI highest run scorer in the series.
Unless the criteria you mentioned was not in place prior to the Ireland series, Lewis was obviously deemed fit enough to play AND perform outstandingly for his team in that series.
21 days……so 3 weeks later……WI selectors announced the team to tour Sri Lanka and dropped Lewis due to his inability to pass a fitness test.
So he was fit less than a month ago to be Man of the series and outperform everyone on a team that included the following:
Shai Hope
Brandon King
Nicholas Pooran
Kieron Pollard
Sunil Ambris
Romario Shepherd
But 21 days later, he not fit enough to go to Sri Lanka?
Here’s the message the selectors likely wanted to send:
Fitness is of critical importance and if you can’t pass the fitness test, you won’t be selected.
Here’s the message that was likely received:
No matter how good you perform, fitness takes precedence. So focus on passing the fitness test to be selected. Performance is secondary.
The selectors may have figured that they sent a clear message to everyone where fitness lies in the priority scale. And not even a Man of the Series is exempt.
Well they sent a clear message alright.
Given the size of our populations, we already scarce on world class, or potential world class resources. This is a virtual example of cutting off one’s nose to spite one’s face.
Well intentioned no doubt. Asinine in reality.
They doing the same thing with Hetmeyer. The difference is……Hetmeyer doh perform. Not anymore for WI anyway.
In today’s world, dem fellas DO NOT NEED WEST INDIES to earn a good living. They see what goes on. They see for every Pooran, there are a dozen Jermaine Blackwood’s, Fabien Allen’s etc
Doh talk fuh so called fans and their eternal criticism and vitriol.
We deserve what we get because is so we like it.
Evin Lewis

What was more disappointing in that entire situation is that Simmons & Pollard his countrymen were Coach & Captain what did they really think they were going to accomplish especially when they were picking Cornwall in Test Cricket!!!
In reply to granite
Blood we are now allowed to be Iittle insular as we will not be the West Indies at the Olympics.
It seems I am the only one salivating at the prospect of being at the Olympics.
In reply to imusic
I WAS gonna engage you on Poorans brilliance and dominance and yet...disappointing stumble at the proverbial finish line the other night...that FIRST TON was EASILY his to take.
but given your pavlovian responses to flags I fear that any decent chat may end up in distractions bout who like who and all that...
In reply to Onionman0
I really do not understand how anyone could come to the conclusion because a player excels in T20 or ODI cricket he should open in Tests. It is the most perplexing conclusion how do you arrive at this?
Congrats to him on his ton!
In reply to voiceofreason
I fully endorse your observation that a player excelling in T20 or ODI should never be the criteria for red ball selection.......I myself oppose this......
But in case of Lewis, it's not his excelling in white ball only.......
He has played few First class matches.... average 30.....not bad considering West Indies....
Has very good ODI average of 36....
Modern test cricket is upgraded version of ODI....team scoring 5 runs or 4 runs per over.... West Indies opening pairs very defensive.....Lewis surely over period has shown ability to handle good pace....that 175 in England was master class....can play spin.....very rare in West Indies cricket.....
That's my take.... people calling for Hope.... but for me red ball cricket improvement....
Lewis
Bravo.... Bangladesh recently recalled Mushfiqur same age....Sri Lanka recalled Angelo ..
Hety
These three player can play pace and spin well equally...but all three has been sidelined due to hypocrisy, insult, insularity, personal grudges......
In reply to Onionman0
I really don't like these kind of discussions, but...
Please go to YouTube and watch Lewis 175..
Now imagine test conditions and the bowlers setting a field, and maintaining a line.
I am not saying that Lewis will fail,
but the same argument that people using against Hope, can be used against Lewis.
When was the last time Lewis played any sort of red ball?
Hope actually played County Cricket recently.
Lewis may make a great test batsmen, but I have not seen anything to support that.
I saw evidence in King and Hope, limited red ball games.
I will say again, I would love to see Windies best squad in a test arena.
That means no Alzarri, no Braffit, no Tage, no Bonner, no Blaclwood.
Alzarri may make it after a long rest and restoration.
At this time, he is not bowling as he should given his experience.

21 days is a long time in the fitness circle. Sometimes we take these headlines at face value, but most times it is much more than that. The head selector at the time said as much as he could say publicly. Players have a responsibility in between series/tournaments to keep a certain level of fitness. I recall at a particular time when the WCB introduced a scheme where they contracted 15 players in each of the territories, and appointed coaches to coach them on a daily basis to keep in shape. The pay was quoted in $US dollars and was above the average public servant in the region. In particular cases, the coach(es) showed up early and on time each day, but the players were either very late, very very late, or did not show up at all; that was the pattern. So, behind the scene you never know what is happening. Some of the players involved in that scenario are still around.
In reply to Besar
Bro I heard that before.
Remember that Fatwall and Gayle were given certain exemptions.
So it is not a certainty that every player had to pass the fitness tests.
That said: lack of fitness affect one's ability to concentrate etc..

commentary....
Icing on cake......
Evin Lewis isn't Bajan???
In reply to Onionman0
I have watched that innings more than once on YouTube.
In addition to watching the game on live coverage.
I am sticking to my points.
In reply to granite
In case your comments was aimed at me!
I support Ozz in international cricket, then Windies.
In Caribbean competitions, I support Guyana first.
As far as Bajan cricketers are concerned:
Give me Hope, Holder (who disappoints me), Roach (who I think is done), and Mayers
I have time for Greaves and Springer, but they are not in Windies first 11 for me.
I have time for Wickham, but he is not ready yet.
If I had to pick a Windies starting 11 in test, Only Hope and Holder would start.
In reply to TanteMerle Ooooh Tanty, you're a badjohn, aren't you?!!
In reply to TanteMerle
No TanteMerle,I have forgotten why I posted that little comment, anyway I respect your posts and you are one of my respected posters,I learn quite a bit from you.RESPECT!

So we can start cussing each other,is long time me na cuss anybody.
In reply to granite
Thanks bro. Respect.
Evin had a nice opportunity to pace himself like a Test batsman and fill his boots with runs tonight.
Maybe he prefers batting first than chasing
In reply to WIfan26
Post of the decade.
Harper got stuck in 1980's mode with his fitness penchant. That he broadsided Hetmyer in the wash was pure snobbery.
But
I could not understand Phil and Polly's stance regarding Evin. Not only did the Windian sidelining hurt his international chances but if truly hacked his IPL appearances. He petered out of the reckoning. And thereafter saw his franchise opportunities thin out.
WI are our worst enemies.
In reply to cumberland
Insularity and bad mind the plague of WI cricket!!!
Evin is certainly going through a lean patch
