The ARG was a novelty in that it was the first cricket ground in the Windward/Leeward area to host (recognized) International cricket. It was a novelty, which not only attracted the crowds from the neighboring islands, but from the larger 'islands' as well. By the emergence of the Viv Richards Stadium, the novelty had rubbed off because other competing facilities by then had been built on some of the other islands making the travel to Antigua no longer appealing/necessary.
In summary, too many stadiums on too many islands competing for the same 'resources'. The combined population just too small to support them all.
I stated the above opinion some 15 years or so ago and as a result, got my head handed to me in a basket.
