A Wall Street Journal poll laid out the most important issues to voters:
1. Economy
2. Immigration
3. Abortion
4. Preserving Democracy
Let us skip the complicated #1 and circle back to it.
2. Immigration
Besides all the talk what did Trump accomplish in his 4 years of claiming he was going to fix the crisis? He failed at building any new wall and reducing the numbers of illegals crossing the border. Illegal immigration is not an easy problem to solve and Trump created more problems than solutions like separating families at the border. Trump talks a lot on the issue but solved nothing.
3. Abortion
You are either for it (with restrictions) or against it. Who know what Trump's position actually is but he is flip flopping on the issue.
4. Preserving Democracy
Jan 6. Enough said.
1. Economy
Perception is sure greater than reality.
Absence must truly make the heart grow fonder. Trump's greatest shame is how he handled the Covid Pandemic. Millions of Americans died, America handled it worse than any other developed nation, and you can squarely lay blame at Trump's feet.
All Trump does is talk. He is going to mass deport illegals? Who actually believes that crap? I guess millions of Americans do.

What did Donald Trump actually do in 4 years?

Trump is in an impossible position on the issue of abortion. I saw a recent NYT Times poll where abortion was the #1 issue for women under 45 years of age, and that's why Trump is in a panic. Also, a recent ABC news poll has Trump trailing Harris 52% to 46% among likely voters, which is outside the margin of error, and Harris is leading Trump 54% to 41% among women voters. Trump needs to narrow that gap to win in November, and the only way to do that is to moderate his position on abortion. But moderating on abortion will drive away his evangelical base

Those MAGA cult kool aid drinkers are not going anywhere and Trump knows it.

There was an immediate backlash from far right evangelicals after Trump hinted that he might vote in favor of the Florida constitutional amendment to protect abortion rights, and Trump immediately started backpedaling. I think that speaks volumes about his thinking regarding keeping those voters. I'm not saying that they will switch and vote for Harris. But they may stay home on election day.

Regarding immigration, Trump blocked a bipartisan bill that was negotiated by one of the most conservative Republicans in the Senate. But wait until Kamala starts talking statistics during the debate and points out that illegal border crossings are lower now than when Trump left office.

Unfortunately the numbers are not impactful. The Republicans have successfully painted the Dems as the party for illegal immigrants.

Regarding the economy, Obama left the US economy on auto-pilot and Trump rode the coattails of the Obama economy. The only significant economic policy enacted during the Trump administration was a massive tax cut for the wealthy that ballooned the deficit. Every month during the Trump administration was infrastructure month, and he was an abysmal failure at getting infrastructure legislation passed.
Trump was warned about COVID months before it landed on American shores and simply buried his head in the sand until it was too late. The less said about his administration's response to COVID the better.
