18:00 Local Time, 22:00 GMT, 03:30 IST:

The Falcons still have six games to go and every game literally is a must-win to stay in the race for the playoffs. But they play the mighty Knight Riders this game who just bulldozed their opponents last game. This is going to be a stiff challenge for the hosts.

When the going is tough sometimes a break helps. It breaks the rhythm and good can happen through change. But there is no respite for the Falcons unfortunately as the Antigua leg of the season came right at the start when they didn't click as a unit in their debut season. Four games, four losses and they are left with one final home game today. Can they put smiles on the faces of their fans before the CPL caravan shifts elsewhere?
Brandon King joined the squad before the last game but he's still not played since picking up the side strain in the T20 World Cup. When asked about his fitness, Chris Green wasn't giving away too much and said he's hoping for the batter's availability at some point in the comp. Is he match-ready tonight? They need his solidity, his class at the top.

sgtdjones 2024-09-05 22:07:54

....

The Trinbago Knight Riders, meanwhile, have played just one game this season. That, though, was a commanding display against the St Kitts and Nevis Patriots, where they scored 250 and then contained a strong batting line-up to scraps.
On paper, they are perhaps the most stacked team in the competition, but they, of all teams, would know that cricket is not played that way. And having already flexed their muscles once, they would want to do so again tonight, especially after what the Guyana Amazon Warriors and the St Lucia Kings have managed since the Knight Riders last played.

Four matches, four defeats and zero points - the Antigua and Barbuda Falcons' debut season has not quite gone to plan so far, and they are now pretty much moving towards last-ditch territory. They are not there yet, but if they are to mount a serious challenge for the playoffs, they will likely have to win five matches. And they only have six left…

6:15pm
The Falcons have batted first in every fixture so far, often ending up with under-par totals, which their bowlers have been unable to defend.
The Knight Riders, too, batted first when they played the Patriots.
One of these sides, thus, will chase for the first time this season tonight…

Disagree. Losing off the last ball does not suggests that to me. The 141 was to me the only one.

Is Brandon King fit now? Regardless Jewel needs to bat at 3! Billings has been a failure so far and Amir far from his best. Those two must step up! We have done well in the bowling department but our batting has struggled. First two games we should have won but the last two we got bulldozed!

6:32pm

The Trinbago Knight Riders have won the toss and they have elected to field first. Pollard says there are a few factors behind the decision and he hopes that the pitch gets better to bat on later in the evening. More than a couple of changes for them too, which we will have for you shortly. Green, meanwhile, sees the funny side of losing another toss and is hoping to finish off their home leg with a win. Adds that they want to play a strong brand of cricket tonight. No changes to their XI.

Pitch Report:

We are back to the pitch where we started, meaning that the square boundaries are 61m and 64m, respectively. 74m hit straight down the ground. The pitch has been good all the way through, reckons Pommie Mbangwa and he senses there is nothing dissimilar tonight. Whoever bats first, cannot settle for a middling score of around 160. Chasing 185 or so will challenge the team batting second, he feels.

AJ: "Remind me again why Antigua and st kitts have played 4 games in a week while tkr and Barbados have only played 1" -- It has a lot to do with logistics because of the travel involved between islands. So, teams are playing their home games clustered together to avoid the extra to and fro. Once the Falcons and the Patriots are done with their home games, the Barbados Royals and the St Lucia Kings will have their string of home matches.

The Falcons will be fairly pleased with where they are, given how their batting has performed this season. That said, there has been a post-powerplay slowdown and they might want to rectify that soon, especially if they are to wrestle back momentum

Salamkheil gets Fakhar Zaman!

Salamkheil gets Fakhar Zaman! Looped up leg-spinner on a full length outside off. Zaman backs away, trying to go inside out but ends up too far away from the ball. Has to reach out and all he manages is a tame outside edge that is snaffled up by Narine at short third. The pressure pays off, and the Falcons are stuttering!

Fakhar Zaman c Narine b Waqar Salamkheil 38 (26b 5x4 0x6) SR: 146.15

2 dong....

Waqar to Primus, no run
huge shout, not given! Zipped in full on leg stump. Primus has an almighty swipe at it and seems to miss. The ball pops up off the pad and is caught by Gous. Salamkheil is adamant he has gotten his man and convinces Pollard to review, who does so with a smile. Gous seemed to appeal for the lbw before also trying his luck with the catch. Nothing on UltraEdge but it does feel like the ball pitched just outside leg. Replays confirm the ball pitched just outside leg and Primus stays!

Gets hit on the pads but the question here is whether the ball hit him in line with the stumps. We go upstairs to find out. If this has hit Imad in line, this could be curtains. No bat involved, which is not a surprise. All eyes on Ball Tracking now and...it reckons the impact is just outside off. Knight Riders are out of reviews now!

....

8:42pm An innings of three very distinct phases. The powerplay was dominated by the Falcons, with Greaves and Zaman taking full toll of the field restrictions. The Knight Riders then applied the squeeze, courtesy of some help by the Falcons, who seemed to get their batting order all wrong, with their promotion of Primus, in particular, not paying dividends. Imad Wasim, though, did rectify things towards the end (to an extent). Allen also played his part with an 11-ball 25 and that has powered the Falcons to their highest score this season.

For the visitors, Narine bagged two, as did Salamkheil. The latter was perhaps the pick of the bunch, although Hinds did not fare badly, despite bowling two overs at the death. The Knight Riders, at this stage, will be content with the total they are chasing, although if they get there, they will have scripted a record chase. Join us in a bit for the second innings!

Justin Greaves: I think we had a lot of chat leading up to this game and wanted to express ourselves. We were struggling a bit in the middle overs, so we (me and Zaman) decided to put more pressure on the bowlers in the powerplay. The ball is coming on, as long as you put pace on it. (On the score) We got a score on the board and our bowlers need to go out there and execute their plans.

8:55pm Right. We are back. Gous and Narine to open for the Knight Riders. Amir has the new ball for the Falcons - here we go!

Amir to Gous, no run
was that a chance?! Low full toss outside off. Gous laces his cover drive and hits it uppishly towards Zaman at cover. He dives sharply to his right but cannot hold on

Amir to Gous, FOUR runs
edged and four!Back of a length just outside off. Nips away a touch and squares up Gous, who gets a thick outside edge. The ball lands in front of Greaves at slip and bobbles past him!

sgtdjones 2024-09-06 02:47:54

10:43pm Phew. What a game of cricket that was. It ebbed and flowed. It twisted and turned. And it was perhaps fitting that Primus, who huffed and puffed with the bat and contributed to a major middle-overs slowdown, stood tall with the ball, restricting the Knight Riders and getting the job done for the home side. Prior to that, Springer had done his job, especially removing Carty in the previous over. Allen was also magnificent through the middle and it was arguably his spell that sowed the seeds of success for the Falcons.

The Knight Riders will be disappointed. The total seemed within reach but they just could not kick on when it mattered. They kept losing wickets at crucial moments and despite Carty and Pollard putting together a decent partnership to take them within touching distance, they could not get over the line.

Fabian Allen, Player of the Match: We were searching for that win and grateful we got it tonight. (On him batting higher up) Whatever the team requires, I will bat there. (On the catch to dismiss Pooran) When you take catches of one of the best players, you have to celebrate and I am grateful (I could take it). I just wanted to bowl in the right areas and got the results. We were searching for 180 but 170-odd is good on this wicket, we defended well. (On the crowd) Grateful for the crowd, they supported us right through.

Could have easily been 3-2 but 1-4 so we have to find a way out of it. Gain some confidence from this win. I suggest we really figure out how we handle Fabien in the batting lineup. If is one player that is floatable it should be Fabien or even Springer. That Primus move almost cost us the game but kudos to him he redeemed himself bowling at the death with a handicapped field.

Chris Green, Antigua and Barbuda Falcons captain: We have had a tough time here at home, we were not at our best in the last couple of games. The way we finished, bringing four in and then three in and then getting a man sent off, I think they got the timings wrong. (On losing the toss again) Luck has not been on my side, really happy for the fans and for my team. The thing that makes me so happy was that Primus, Springer and Amir, they have had some tough times but the character and the bravery they showed, when nothing was going their way, that was serious character. We still have to carry on playing this positive, aggressive brand of cricket. I think we showed ourselves what we can do. Nothing needs to change. We know the equation is simple and we need to apply our knowledge (for the rest of the games on the road).

Kieron Pollard, Trinbago Knight Riders captain: It was a good game of cricket. Just felt we let ourselves down a bit. We have to play the emerging players - that rule is there for a reason (smiles). But you saw the way he (Parris) batted, he had some elegance and character. It is about giving opportunities (to the emerging players) as well. It is early in the tournament. When we get to Trinidad, the games will come thick and fast. We have a couple of days off, so we will travel, take some rest and then get back to practice. There is a good bunch of experienced guys who understand the nature of travelling and cricket.
