T&T: the Sanctity of Life in Peril

We have indeed arrived at a troubling juncture.
Across our twin island republic and far beyond, the sanctity of human life seems to carry little meaning or consequence anymore.
How did we arrive at this point where taking a life has become so casual and commonplace?

Trinidad and Tobago, a small nation in the Caribbean, is facing a critical issue of a diminishing value for human life.
Locally , there seems to be a lack of understanding and appreciation for the sanctity of human life.
The alarming rise in criminality has transformed violence into the norm, with murder becoming an entry point and ultimate objective for many.

The country has witnessed a concerning trend where political ideologies and personal disputes have tragically escalated into mass violence and bloodshed.
From gang-related retaliatory killings to senseless murders over trivial arguments, the disregard for human life is pervasive in every aspect of society.
Even within families and social gatherings, conflicts can turn deadly, highlighting a deep-rooted issue in how life is respected and protected.

Furthermore, the manufacturing industry in Trinidad and Tobago also contributes to the devaluation of human life.
Incidents of negligence and disregard for safety measures have resulted in tragic outcomes, putting lives at risk for the sake of producing goods and services.
The consequences of this callous attitude towards human life are not only seen in the high murder rates but also in the increasing incidents of home invasions and even the tragic killing of children.

As the country approaches 500 murders in 2024, it is evident that there is a stark loss of consciousness regarding the value and sacredness of human life.
Without a fundamental shift in mindset and a renewed emphasis on cherishing and preserving every life, Trinidad and Tobago risks reaching a point of no return in its disregard for the inherent worth of human beings.

It is nearly incomprehensible the depths to which we have fallen:
6th in per capita murders
14th per capita Crime
Poverty the mother of Crime
When a Government cannot provide a safe haven for its citizens , it has failed.

Sarge.
