TKR vs St Lucia Kings

TKR vs St Lucia Kings

And so, here we are. Back at the Brian Lara Stadium in Tarouba, where the Knight Riders, just a couple of days ago, made a 194-run chase look routine. The Kings, though, will offer plenty of resistance, not just because a win will solidify their place at the perch (and take them closer to a top-two finish) but also because they are on a four-match winning streak, having last lost on September 10 to…….the Knight Riders.

sgtdjones 2024-09-24 13:25:00

On the face of it, you could argue there is not much riding on this fixture, especially with both the St Lucia Kings and the Trinbago Knight Riders having secured their spots in the top four. But look deeper, and there is an awful lot still at play - most notably a top-two berth and an essential psychological edge.

sgtdjones 2024-09-24 13:25:21

9:15am The last time these sides met, Kieron Pollard rolled back the years, producing a display of vintage hitting, which included four sixes in the penultimate over and a hush celebration once the win was completed. Could we see similar fireworks today?

9:25am Trinbago Knight Riders have won the toss and have opted to field first. Pollard says bouncing back in their last game and the way they chased down the score was fantastic, although he adds that there is room for improvement in their death bowling and their fielding. du Plessis reckons the pitch looks a little sticky and that it seems moist. Their batting line-up has adapted well, he says, with everyone chipping in. He also praises their bowling attack for how they have fared.

Pitch Report:

Same strip is being used as the other day, although that was a night game. 73m hit straight down the ground, with 62m square boundaries either side. 10 out of 12 day games have been won by the team batting second. Simon Doull reckons he might not be worried about batting first, and he expects the ball to slide on nicely. The outfield is still a little damp and he reckons a score of around 170-180 could be good batting first.

du Plessis breaks the shackles! Another half-tracker on the stumps and this time, the Kings captain does not miss out. Hops back and pummels it over mid wicket!

4.2

Hosein to du Plessis, no run
oh! Tossed up nicely on a length just outside off. du Plessis backs away, looking to go inside out. The ball, though, drops on him late and then spins enough to beat the outside edge. Hosein thought there was bat involved but no support from elsewhere

15.1
1
Pollard to Seifert, 1 run
brilliant effort but Seales cannot make it stick!
Slower ball on a back of a length outside off. Seifert slashes hard at it and slices it towards backward point. Seales makes a brilliant effort to his left but is unable to hold on

15.3
1
Pollard to Seifert, 1 run
well well! Banged in short on leg stump, after pre-empting Seifert shaping for the reverse-lap. He continues with it and helps it towards deep cover point

15.4
1
Pollard to du Plessis, 1 run
what an effort! Into du Plessis' wheelhouse on the pads and he uses his wrists to flick it towards deep backward square leg. Hinds leaps up into the air and then volleyballs it back into play. Saves five runs for his team!

TWO DONG

15.6
W
Pollard to du Plessis, OUT
Pollard gets his opposite number! Slower bumper outside off, asking du Plessis to fetch it leg-side. He takes up the challenge but comes up second-best. Splices it, largely because the ball got up so high and he picks out Hinds on the deep square leg fence. Pollard points to someone in the dug-out. Seems like a plan that has come off but irrespective, that is a vital wicket at this juncture!

11:53am An innings that lasted close to two hours (no over-rate penalties incurred, by the way) and yielded 218 runs. At one point, especially when Charles and du Plessis were smashing it all around, the Kings seemed destined from much more. However, the rest could not replicate those pyrotechnics and they could only manage 45 off the last five, meaning that they ultimately fell short of the 200-run mark.

The Knight Riders, who were without Narine, also lost Bravo to injury, meaning that Pollard had to bowl his entire quota. He did a fine job, though, and ended as the Knight Riders' most successful bowler, bagging four wickets. The rest were not quite at their best, which explains why they now have a tall chase in front of them. They have the firepower to get it done, but can they do it? We will find out in a few minutes.

Tim Seifert: (On if his high back-lift is inspired from du Plessis) 100% from Faf, wanted to find a bit of flow in my batting. Watching him on TV - that is something I wanted to try and it has worked out. (On the score) This is exactly what we wanted, to throw the first punch. We have done one job, now onto the other. Hopefully we have enough.

Wiese to Waqar, OUT
massive appeal, not given! Reviewed by the Kings!
Off-pace on a back of a length just outside off. Grips in the surface and cuts back into Salamkheil, going past his swing. Raps him on the back leg but Christopher Taylor was unmoved. No bat involved. Ball Tracking comes up and....it reckons the ball would have smashed into the inside of leg stump. Another Knight Riders batter bites the departs!

Right. This could be a historic moment. The final time Dwayne Bravo walks out to the middle in a competitive game of cricket. A bit of a shame that he has to hobble his way to the crease but he wants a piece of this

17.5

Wiese to Dwayne Bravo, no run
Bravo decides to retire-hurt! Shortish just outside off. Bravo gets behind the line of the ball and defends. The perfect back-foot defence and Bravo decides that that is that. You can sense the emotion on his face. He tried to solider on but just could not. That is also the end of the game, and the Kings win by a sizeable margin!

St Lucia Kings victory

....1:47pm Well, an anti-climactic, although emotional end to the game. The Kings had the game in the bag much earlier and while Bravo coming out to wield the willow, perhaps one final time, promised an event-filled finish, it just was not to be.

The perfect back-foot defence and Bravo decides that that is that. You can sense the emotion on his face. He tried to solider on but just could not. That is also the end of the game, and the Kings win by a sizeable margin. The fielders take turns to shake hands with Bravo. They too realise the enormity of the situation, and no one really wants to miss out on embracing one of the greatest T20 cricketers this part of the world has ever produced. And after a bit of the dust has settled, Bravo indeed sheds a few tears, which could be the clearest indication yet of how serious his injury is, and how this could be the last time he turns out in the CPL. Ever.

sgtdjones 2024-09-24 17:58:09

Johnson Charles, Player of the Match: We had a very long session planning for this game. We really stuck to our plans. Coming into this contest, it is all about having a positive intent and taking the game to the opposition, and we did that. (On his switch-hits) It is something I have put into my game. I have been practicing since the PSL earlier in the year and it is developing well. (On the goal to win the title) That is the plan - to come out as champions. Now, it is getting down to the business end and we are not looking to get complacent. Take it one game at a time and bring it home for the fans. This was dedicated to Julien Alfred, thank you for bringing the gold and silver home (at the Olympics).

sgtdjones 2024-09-24 18:04:58

Faf du Plessis, St Lucia Kings captain: What a great game. You have to do a lot of things right (to beat a team like that). Charles was excellent - the way he put the spinners under pressure. He is playing his best cricket and long may it continue. He has gone back and worked on some shots. In the past, people would bowl lot of left-arm spin to him. That switch hit is Kevin Pietersen-like and he is becoming really difficult to bowl to. Perfect example of someone still growing his game. We have had three day games in a row, so it has been a physical and mental battle. We are really driven as a group and we want to get ourselves in the top two. One more game left, and we will try to put the foot on the gas and do the right things. Sad to see DJ Bravo finishing in that way. In my mind, he is someone I have admired for a long time. Looks like the end of his CPL (career). What a player, what a career and what a man. He has done so much for everyone around the Caribbean. Would have liked to give him a good send-off, with him walking off, and wanted to give him a special mention.

Kieron Pollard, Trinbago Knight Riders captain: (On Bravo) We are obviously not sure but it looked pretty serious. We are not sure if it is going to be the end for him and we just want to thank him for all that he has done for cricket. Charismatic person and he has been inspiring throughout. He is not a good space right now but he has given everything to cricket, and cricket has rewarded him. (On his bowling and the bowling attack) With DJ going down, with Russell not 100% fit and Narine not there, I had to manage it. It was a good shift for me (with the ball). From a bowling perspective, we have a bit of work to do. (On captaining this side) It is wonderful. The quality of players we have, we have given them different roles and responsibilities. I am at that stage (of my career) where I am just enjoying my cricket, entertaining the crowd.
