I was in GT last weekend for the 2 Barbados v St Lucia games and caught the Guyana v Antigua game as well. My host offered me an egg bawlllllll and I refused because I don't eat egg yoke. But I was surprised when my friend took a bite and there was a whole boiled egg inside the outer shell of the egg bawlllll smile

doosra 2024-09-28 19:22:14

In reply to Walco

so wait is wah yuh think egg ball is budday

is a whole boiled in a fried cassava and flour dough

egg bawl is powa

you should try cassava ball or potato ball then

Man I had some nice Guyanese mauby last weekend and I loved it. Guyanese mauby is very close to Bajan mauby, but the Trini mauby tastes like cough syrup to me. The trinis put some unnecessary flavouring in their mauby.

doosra 2024-09-28 19:24:43

gt mauby is good and i enjoyed your mauby as well

Walco 2024-09-28 19:25:38

I was also offered cassava ball. But for some reason I thought there would be scrambled or fried egg inside the egg ball, not a whole egg smile

doosra 2024-09-28 19:28:35

In reply to Walco

cassava ball is a smaller egg ball without egg lol

looks like you had a decent visit

hope you found one or 2 favorite gt things to eat

By the way, we were only able to get seats on the grass mound for the Warriors game Saturday night because the stands were sold out. I saw that silly thread started by Emir about violence on the grass mound at the Royals game. We had a blast on the grass mound and the fans were very friendly. But the way the Guyanese fans celebrated after the win was a different experience for me. A lot of the fans started shaking their beers and spouting beer in the air like a champagne celebration. Needless to say, I got wet up smile

Loved the beef curry, and GT Chinese food was surprisingly good. One of my friends loved the saltfish and bakes

Walco 2024-09-28 19:52:41

In reply to doosra

We were actually able to buy the tickets online. They mysteriously became available online Saturday morning during the Royals game. But I'm sure the scalpers made a killing selling tickets for the Warriors games in GT. And another big one coming up tomorrow.

doosra 2024-09-28 20:01:10

In reply to Walco

a hear Nikhil on air saying someone told him tickets at 80k (400 USD) for the game tomorrow

Walco 2024-09-28 20:55:41

In reply to doosra

I am not surprised at those ticket prices. We were considering staying longer for the Royals v Warriors on Wednesday and the only tickets available online were VIP tickets that cost $175. If those tickets are sold out for the game tomorrow, $400 for one of them does not seem too crazy.

Paper bag fried rice??? Never heard of that before. But I did learn that GT has bag juice like in Jamaica. I saw someone in GT drinking sorrel out of a plastic bag

Believe it or not, today is the first time I ever hear about that. Wifey and I went to a Guyanese spot close to where I live and this female customer in there was asking my wife if she ever tried cucumber sour?
That was a first for both of us!

Last Easter I took my kids and grandkids to Guyana for the first time in their lives to celebrate my 60th birthday. So, Easter Monday we were heading up to 63 Beach and my daughter wanted the paper bag fried rice so badly that she had seen on social media. To our disappointment every damn establishment was closed for the holiday except the Chinese supermarkets!lollol

Cucumber sour is not my thing... I prefer mango.

Some country side schools still got people selling cool-down, icicles and snow cones.

Juice up on middle street does got some proper juice in plastic bags and bottles too. One of the best places to get fresh juices in GT.

SCC1 2024-09-28 21:26:46

There is a Chinese restaurant in Belvedere/Hamphire that make a fried rice with the rice being the big star of the show. It's not Double Wing...I think it's Kway.

My family when they visited brought back some and I tried to replicate it...going the way of a Hainanese Chicken Rice. I believe it's not fried rice, but something similar to the HCR. Best rice on the planet.

I forgot to mention the pepper sauce/ chili oil that came with it. It tasted very salty with an umami overload, which led me to believe that they added some of the chicken broth to the fermented pepper sauce and make it very tasty.

When I was going to school in New Amsterdam (early 00s), I had the Sue Brothers paper bag fried rice. It was the best thing I TASTED during the entire 6 years of commuting to NA.

The WCB fried rice is top notch as well. I can't remember if there was one by #2/Cotton Tree. I used to spend weekends over at my cousins in #2 back in the day thinking that I was a big man and taking the ferry to Rosignol.

Good times.

In reply to doosra

Ah, that's good to know. I get goosebumps reminiscing about the place. I am glad that I found a community where I can enjoy this.

So, I am from Albion...took the bus every day to NA for school. It was a scene.

Regarding the ferry, it was around my 14th birthday when I tried to convince my parents that I can independently take the ferry to visit my cousins 'over the river'; it was successful.

SCC1 2024-09-28 21:48:41

Around the turn of the century, Lower Corentyne got a decent school team along with Cowboy School.

Hehe, most of my fellow clubmates went to those schools.

doosra 2024-09-28 21:49:42

In reply to SCC1

how come dem let you go to NA for school
did you go to NAMS?

Narsingh got away to BEI if i recall

SCC1 2024-09-28 21:58:26

In reply to doosra

Common entrance time came, and I went and did my stuff, got placed at NAMS with just under 500 marks.

I'm not sure where Narsingh went, even though he's from my club (I started practicing at Albion in the end of 2001.)

At Multi, there were some solid cricketers from Tucber Park, Bermine, Young Warriors, and Rose Hall Estate.
Lemme see if I can recall their names: Bush (Ishwar Singh), his brother Gajanand Singh, Jason Sanmogan, Julian Moore, Anthony D'Anrade, Anil Solomon, Dane Benny...among others.

All those dudes (including me) used to make use of the concrete strip between the bicycle shed and the cafeteria to play tapeball cricket. Just two guys batting and everyone else fielding...when one of them is dismissed, someone in the field replaces them.

Fun times before phones and internet and thing

Raskil 2024-09-29 00:03:30

The paper bag fried rice was before the times of plastic containers…really a matter of use what’s available. It tasted real good. Especially if y’all had a serving of knuckles, who know know!

NA
Dhall puri with icicle , the best lunch from the cafeteria.
That strip of concrete between the cafeteria and bicycle shed was the only one of the ‘pitches’ the other one was fully grass the other side of the cafeteria.
Mr Samuels had his cows grazing all over the place BTW

SCC1 2024-09-29 00:20:28

In reply to Raskil

Weren't there those paper food containers prior to the Styrofoam boxes? Their time was short-lived.

When I was a brand new first-former, my classmates and I never had the opportunity to use that strip of concrete between the bike shed and the cafeteria. We went on an expedition to find our own cricket field.

We 'discovered' a wide expanse of nature taking over a tarmac behind where the bathrooms were. I had great memories scaling over the fence to retrieve our ball.

Raskil 2024-09-29 00:27:54

In reply to SCC1

Those boxes were too big for a serving of fried rice.
The tarmac was always available to play a full match, the strip was a lunch quickie.
Behind the tarmac was the best escape to cut school and go to Strand or the other two cinemas and watch movies. Just carry a change of shirt.

Strand
Faarz
Gaiety
Cinemas if I remember correctly

SCC1 2024-09-29 00:34:13

In reply to Raskil

The pepper and ketchup used to stick on the paper and it provided a nice area to lick. I'm not sure they were that big. The amount of food to price was more than manageable.

Wow, I am enamored with that tarmac...coming from the countryside of Berbice, I felt that I fit right in. It was a culture shock for me starting secondary school in a wholly unfamiliar environment.

Raskil 2024-09-29 00:40:32

In reply to SCC1

More than 80% of students going into Multi, more qualified to attend however choosing not to, are from outside of New Amsterdam. It was always going to be a culture shock.
It was an experience.

SCC1 2024-09-29 00:45:02

In reply to Raskil

That culture shock faded away fast after I got comfortable with one of the best English teachers I have ever had, Mr. Ian Carter, in form 1.

Apart from his subject area, I learned quit a lot from him about life and cricket. His knowledge was invaluable, and I was a sponge.
