Tim David: TKR still gunning for top-two spot
AFTER securing a crucial 30-run victory over Barbados Royals in their penultimate Republic Bank Caribbean Premier League (CPL) T20 preliminary round match on September 27, Trinbago Knight Riders (TKR) must deliver a batting masterclass against Guyana Amazon Warriors on September 29, if they are to confirm a top-two spot heading into the playoffs. Despite TKR (12 pts) concluding their five-match home leg at Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Tarouba in fine style, they’re currently third on the standings, with the Warriors and St Lucia Kings respectively ahead, both on 14 pts each.
TKR sit in third (+0.090) while Barbados Royals (+0.084) enter the final phase cemented in fourth. This means if TKR put on a brazen batting display against Warriors on September 29, they can potentially increase their net run rate and move past Kings to seal second place heading into the playoffs.Australian and TKR batsman Tim David said the squad is well aware of what’s at stake in their final prelim match against Warriors at home. And despite their competitive rivalry, David believes TKR have the artillery to humble the Warriors in their own backyard.
“We’ve known for a little while that we’re going to be in the final four but we’re still gunning for a top two spot because you get an advantage of trying to get straight through to the final. We had brilliant support here in Trinidad, and now we’re going to Guyana and we’re going to play the finals there.“The crowd has been brilliant here (Trinidad). We might have something a bit different in Guyana. I’ve heard it’s very one-sided support. It’s been a great week so far but now we’re looking forward to getting over there and challenging for the trophy,” David said.
TKR RALLYING
Pollard’s wounded men face Warriors for top-two spot
“We will continue to rally.”That was the assurance given by Trinbago Knight Riders skipper Kieron Pollard after his injury-stricken side whipped the Barbados Royals by 30 runs on Friday night to stay in the hunt for a top-two finish in the Republic Bank Caribbean Premier League.TKR were again without the services of ace spinner Sunil Narine, while Pollard said Andre Russell was still nursing his way back to 100% fitness. Meanwhile, Tim David left the field after stretching to save a six on the boundary in front of more than 19,000 fans at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Tarouba on Friday night.
TKR face the defending champions Guyana Amazon Warriors at Providence from 7 p.m. today and will need to win handsomely if they are to secure a spot in the top two. The Amazon Warriors currently top the CPL standings on 14 points on net run rate over the St Lucia Kings after their 35-run victory yesterday over the Kings. TKR are third on 12 points and have an inferior net run rate to the teams above them.
The top two sides will get two chances to reach the final. “We’re always looking forward to it (playing in Guyana),” said Pollard.
“We’ve done some good things down in Guyana as well. This will be our first outing down there but we will go and assess the conditions and try to play a good game of cricket,” he added.

Pooran breaks Rizwan’s T20 run-scoring world record
West Indies batter Nicholas Pooran made history on Friday, breaking Pakistan’s Mohammed Rizwan’s world record for most runs in T20s in a calendar year. The southpaw accomplished this historic high in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) 2024 game for his side Trinbago Knight Riders against Barbados Royals. In the game, Pooran, 28, continued his fine form in the league and T20s this year with a short, but an impactful 15-ball cameo of 27 runs, consisting of four boundaries and a six. His runs came at a strike rate of 180.00. This knock, along with fine scores from skipper Kieron Pollard (42 in 27 balls), Keacy Carty (32 in 34 balls) and Andre Russell (31 in 12 balls), took the team to 175/7, which they defended successfully by restricting Barbados to 145/9 despite fine knocks from Alick Athanaze (44 in 33 balls) and David Miller (30 in 15 balls).
Pooran, a native of Couva, is the leading run-getter in T20s this year, with 2,059 runs in 66 matches and 65 innings at an average of 42.02, with a strike rate of 160.85 and best score of 98. He has scored 14 half-centuries this year. He has smacked 139 fours and 152 this year. In CPL 2024, Pooran has scored 312 runs in nine innings at an average of 39.00, with a strike rate of 175.28 and best score of 97. He has two half-centuries in the competition and is the fourth-highest run-getter. Rizwan’s record was scoring 2,036 runs in 48 T20s back in 2021 at an average of 56.60 and a strike rate of over 132, with a century and 18 fifties. His best score was 104*.
Pooran’s distant rivals this year in run-scoring are: South Africa’s Reeza Hendricks (1,555 runs in 59 matches at an average of 31.10, with 14 fifties and strike rate of over 12, Pakistan’s Babar Azam (1,480 runs in 36 matches at an average of 46.25, with a century, 13 fifties and strike rate of 132.73) and Travis Head (1,442 runs in 39 matches at an average of 41.20, with a century and 13 fifties, with a strike rate of 182.07).Earlier in CPL 2024, Pooran went past legendary Chris Gayle’s world record of 135 sixes in T20 cricket during a calendar year and cracked the 150-sixes mark recently, becoming the first player to do so.

Nicholas Pooran: I almost got out there in the 90s again, but that's cricket, sometimes you can make a bad decision, but I was happy to have gotten there. I knew I had to put the head down and bat for my team. I'm happy to contribute to the team. Utmost respect for Guyana, I have played here for 3 years. Loved the environment back then, there is a nice rivalry between Trinidad and Guyana. Cricket is all about a chance and the wicket has something for the bowlers, so we have to go and defend this.
20:43 Local Time, 00:43 GMT, 06:13 IST: The Pooran show making all the headlines. He got a 100 and didn't disappoint as he played some lustrous shots and has helped TKR with a decent total. Roy at the start played his part. And TKR have ended with a massive score. They challenged themselves to bat first and have done a superb job. Shamar picked up a few wickets at the death and that helped the Warriors to stop the TKR momentum. We will be back in 10 minutes for the chase.

I read it somewhere that the TKR need to win this game by over 100 runs to have any chance of getting into the playoffs.
Looks like the fix is in.

Trinbago Knight Riders won by 74 runs
TKR got so close to sealing a top-two spot. If only had the sub Bryan Charles held on to two Motie catches, things could have been so different.
Earlier Gurbaz started well and along with Hope ensured a good powerplay for GAW. But an inexplicable collapse saw them slip from 64/1 to 88/8. GAW needed 104 to ensure a top-two spot and Motie gave two chances to Charles at that stage who dropped them both. After that with Tahir, Motie kept his nerve and took GAW over that figure of 104. The inevitable happened with TKR winning but they don't finish in the top-two. Their bowling though was excellent tonight with Nathan Edwards, Salamkheil and Hinds taking 3 apiece.

Nicholas Pooran | Player of the Match: It's not about being responsibility or being fearless, I have worked on my execution, I wanted to dig deep and look for my matchup and execute my plans. I just love the environment here in Guyana, I have been playing here for a few years, I have played here for Guyana for 3 years, I don't want to be in a negative mindset on the pitch here, if it spins or if it keeps low, just want to come out and enjoy myself. It's a good one, getting two 90s already in the competition, one of my best 100s in the CPL, any 100 is good, in crunch conditions it's time for us to stand up.
