Guyana Amazon Warriors vs St Lucia Kings

6:05pm: Good evening and welcome to the coverage of CPL 2024 Qualifier 1! After the bizarre events of last night's Eliminator, when a floodlight failure shortened an exciting contest, we're hoping for a full match and a fair fight between both teams in the Qualifier. The table-toppers are set to clash in Guyana. The reigning champions, Guyana Amazon Warriors, will battle for supremacy against Saint Lucia Kings.

Rahmanullah Gurbaz has solidified Guyana's batting lineup, while Shimron Hetmyer has been in outstanding form this season. Shai Hope serves as the lynchpin of the middle order, supported by Moeen Ali, Romario Shepherd, and Keemo Paul to strengthen their batting depth. On the bowling front, veteran Imran Tahir and off-spinner Gudakesh Motie have consistently taken wickets, and Shamar Joseph often injects pace and energy in the middle overs.

Meanwhile, Saint Lucia Kings have had an impressive season, with openers Faf du Plessis and Johnson Charles leading the charge and accumulating a truckload of runs. While their middle order may seem a bit fragile, a couple of strong performances in the playoffs can easily turn the tide. Alzarri Joseph, seasoned campaigner David Wiese, and spinner Noor Ahmed will be crucial for their success.

Both teams will be eager to secure a direct entry to the final, avoiding the longer route of facing Trinbago Knight Riders in Qualifier 2

Both teams will be eager to secure a direct entry to the final, avoiding the longer route of facing Barbados Royals in Qualifier 2

Thus far this season, Guyana Amazon Warriors have won seven of their ten games, accumulating 14 points and sitting at the top of the log, while Saint Lucia Kings have the same number of wins and points but a lower net run rate, finishing the group stage in second position

The average first-innings total at Providence this season has been 167. Teams batting first here have won six times at this venue

Barbados Royals stunned the Trinbago Knight Riders last night in a truncated affair and will meet the loser of tonight's Qualifier. It remains to be seen if Guyana can continue to dominate at their home ground and maintain their stellar record, or if Kings will find a way to outsmart them on this important day. There's a lot at stake tonight, but first, we'll have the toss and team sheets in about 10 minutes

Pretorius to Forde, OUT
Has he nicked it? It's been sent upstairs. Was bowled wider and he was reaching out with the hands, playing far away from his body, trying to smash that over cover, there is a clear spike on the ultra-edge as the ball passes the bat and it's safely taken by the keeper. Bowled full and just inside the marker on off, smartly bowled, good recovery from Pretorius in his last over

At one stage, when Johnson Charles and Faf du Plessis were firing on all cylinders, they seemed set to reach 230 or even more. But credit to Warriors for pulling it back in the last ten overs, as the innings slowed down after Charles's wicket and the introduction of Moeen Ali--who has been in the form of his life this season. Ali conceded only 24 runs and took two vital wickets. Can Guyana chase down this total in front of a packed home crowd and secure a direct entry into the final? We'll find out soon!

The drizzle has gotten heavier and the players are walking off the field..

The groundstaff bring the covers on and we'll be back as soon as rain subsides.. Doesn't look a heavy shower, so this break shouldn't be that long.

For now, Warriors are 15 runs behind the DLS target.. Stay around for further updates.

Vaughn Duncan: "I believe the Cricket Gods are having fun. "

Abid: "If my mathematics is on point, the DLS score at the end of 13 overs is 132."

10:25pm: The covers are still firmly in place, with only the pitch and square covers on. The outfield is getting wet and there's a steady drizzle of rain. Fans have moved up the aisles for some shade. Let's hope it stops soon so we can have a proper contest, unlike last night's curtailed and unconventional match. The floodlights are shining brightly. If there's no more action, Saint Lucia Kings will earn a direct ticket to the final

'He has used the switch-hit, a shot he rarely played before, to good effect to give Kings two shots at a maiden CPL title' Here's Deivarayan Muthu's take on Johnson Charles innovation late in his career Johnson Charles switches his T20 fortunes

The cut-off time for resumption is 11:25pm We saw a surprise yesterday with the power outage close to the cut-off time, so let's see if another one is in store for us!

sgtdjones 2024-10-03 03:36:28

Johnson Charles, Player of the Match: It's all about being positive, having that positive intent. I have been dismissed the most by left-arm spinners but still you got to be positive and you still got to find ways to score. I am all about the positive intent and getting my team off to a great start. It's all about keeping that positive intent going. The game is evolving and you got to keep up pace. Seeing that bowlers are always studying you and always trying to keep you bogged down, it's all about staying up with the pace. I have been practicing different ways of scoring whether it's switch hit or paddle sweep off the pacers and it's going good for me. (on partnership with Faf du Plessis) We feed of each other's energy. We have different styles of play; that gives us a very good understanding and it also plays with the bowlers' minds. This means a lot; for so many years we have been trying. I believe this year is our year. I think we have a very good chance and it's our year to win this
