Outrage as TKR out of CPL playoffs after floodlight outage in Guyana

Trinbago Knight Riders fans have been left disappointed and with a sour taste in their mouths, after their team was eliminated from the 2024 Republic Bank Caribbean Premier League tournament in controversial fashion on Tuesday night.Yesterday, members of the public were still dissatisfied with what transpired. One citizen said, “I find they should do it over and start over from scratch because that wasn’t a fair match. I feel something like a sabotage went on.”Another opined, “I think so (the match should be played over because that is wrong what they did.” Thousands of fans were upset, with many demanding a rematch, that Guyana never host another game, and unfounded claims of sabotage being thrown about. There were more than 4,000 responses.

Check out the picture Newdread is involved in discussion? He looks lost in a gaze.

How did this happen when such lights experienced problems in the past few weeks?

The lights came on at approx. 1 minute before the deadline; it seems suspicious?

How and who made the decision to use D/L format of 5 overs?

Did the TKR captain raise objections?

What choices did the TKR Captain have?

Their are allegations' of fixing after this fiasco ?

Can we have explanations, just facts please?

Meanwhile, Royals captain Rovman Powell intimated that luck was on his team’s side.

“I think it’s a case of us getting lucky tonight, to be honest,” he said.

“At one point, we thought we were out of the competition once the lights started giving problems. It’s unfortunate that the lights went off, or it would have been a beautiful cricket. It’s just unfortunate for a good TKR team to be on the wrong side of luck tonight.”

DLS method used after two-hour delay

As the scenario unfolded during the two-hour delay and even long after the result, cricket fans took to social media to voice their disappointment in the series of events.

As the minutes raced away, viewers were quite literally left in the dark about what was happening at the venue. Anxious fans began to speculate about the reasons for the outage and the possible outcome of the match.

A joint media release from Guyana’s Ministry of Culture, Youth, and Sport and Guyana Power and Light Incorporated (GLP) declared that “all CPL matches at the Providence Stadium, Guyana, were successfully powered from independent generating sets located in the National Stadium and not by the GPL’s grid. The GPL has been on standby at all matches to render technical assistance to the stadium at all times.”

The statement continued, “During the nineteenth over, three (3) floodlights that were powered by an independent generator lost power, thus causing a disruption to the match. GPL’s technical team on standby immediately began rendering assistance and restored power to two of three floodlights on the same circuit. The stadium’s technical staff and GPL worked assiduously to restore power to the third floodlight, which had a technical fault with the underground cable feeding power to that floodlight. A substitute cable was installed quickly to have this floodlight operational. This was achieved at approximately 10.51 pm when the technical team remedied the problem and the game resumed.”

At 10:52 pm TKR would have won the game...

'Dre Russ' rants, Gary Griffith calls for CPL playoffs to make TT return

FORMER national security minister Gary Griffith and Trinbago Knight Riders (TKR) star allrounder Andre Russell were among hundreds who took to social media to express their displeasure with TKR's loss in the 2024 Republic Bank Caribbean Premier League (CPL) eliminator match versus Barbados Royals at the Providence Stadium in Guyana on October 1
For Griffith, the final straw came when Russell, Nicholas Pooran and the TKR team were left in the dark in their must-win eliminator game.

"Coincidentally or not, this (power breakdown) occurred just prior to the completion of TKR’s innings. Coincidentally or not, power was restored mere minutes before the game was about to be abandoned, allowing Barbados Royals to play the minimum five overs required, which destroyed the spirit of the game," he said.Griffith highlighted "security lapses" and "logistical nightmares" in the Guyana leg of the 2024 tournament, which will conclude with the final on October 6.

"Unfortunately, what has been observed in Guyana, starting with a disturbing security breach that resulted in a spectator being attacked and kicked in the head whilst on the ground for several minutes without an immediate law enforcement response, is something that must never be seen in the Caribbean again, whether at the CPL or any other major sporting event," he said. Griffith was alluding to the September 25 clash between the Royals and Guyana Amazon Warriors, where a spectator was beaten by a group of men on the grass mound during the second innings of the match.

Floodlight failure helps Royals beat TKR in CPL Eliminator

Barbados Royals were minutes away from elimination against the Trinbago Knight Riders, but somehow miraculously advanced to the second qualifier of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) with a thrilling nine-wicket win here Tuesday night.

Faulty floodlights at the Providence Stadium, which delayed play for over two hours, had looked set to send the Knight Riders through to the next round based on the fact that they finished in third position at the end of the preliminary rounds, ahead of the fourth-placed Royals.

But with the match minutes away from being called off, the lights returned, setting the stage for David Miller’s brilliant, unbeaten half century to win the match for the Royals. It marked a thrilling end to a contest, although the Knight Riders will no doubt feel hard done by.

Listen Sarge, they had a choice to play with less light and (imho) did the right thing by not as someone could have gotten hurt. In the words of Pouty:

Pollard said once the lights were back, he was "always ready and willing to play within the rules" of the game and did not mind the five-over match. "If rain had fell or something like that, it would have been the same sort of instances where you have to get up and be prepared to play," he said. "So again, it tends to happen and it happens. They [Royals] had a target of 60 to chase, and, well batted by Miller in the end."

I doubt they’ll do that after they see is take two hours for allyuh to fix a floodlight connection. Even if Trinidad descend into brutal civil and ethnic strife( Guyana definitely know about dat) after seeing allyuh take two hours to fix a floodlight connection, they might go Barbados or bermuda

I have it on good authority that Massy is considering lights out on all their operations in Tittie in favour of the far more profitable and lucrative market in Guyana. lol
