The Independent Voice of West Indies Cricket

My first time really watching women’s cricket

I think the cogniscenti and cricket connossieurs on here would appreciate it

Batters mostly ran singles and twos

They took the time to build an innings

Not every ball was hit out the park. Very few in fact.

Even saw defensive strokes in the T20 format. This must have been thrilling for those aficionados.

Bowling was ok with no one that I saw having suspect actions.

Lots of “spinners” who weren’t afraid to flight the ball

Sometimes hard to tell the difference between some seamers and spinners…..but decent none the less.

The overall standard of fielding needs to improve. Hope Ms Henry is ok. There are some outstanding fielders (Dottin is an example) but for the most part, those I’ve seen have been very average.

All in all, a slower, more pedestrian and……dare I say…..geriatric style of play that is bound to excite those that long for “real cricket”.

not a bad assessment

if you had a look at this team last year you might have been really disappointed

they have made a lot of strides esp on the fitness levels...

still work to do to get back to the 2016ish days

also you are looking at the NOT big 3 who either got knocked out or didn't make this round..they generally are a notch or 2 above the rest

I didn’t have much hope for them so they certainly exceeded my expectations.

But I was just going on past results. First time I’ve really seen our team in action.

Matthews and Dottin are several cuts above the rest. Didn’t see much of Taylor as I understand she too is or was in that category.

Of the others, Alleyne isn’t bad as a seamer. Ramharack is a decent spinner and not bad in the field.

But at this stage, it’s really a different game to the men. That true of most sports I guess.

they are going thru a transition phase from that 2016ish team

2 of the recent U19 players - James and Munisar are now making their way... Ramharack is now a settled fixture, replacing Anisa Mohammed, etc

Taylor has been carrying an injury or 2 for over a year now so you are not seeing her best. In this tournament she became only the 2nd woman to score 1000 WC runs...her intl record is excellent

And yes Dottin and Hayley are as good as any you'd find around the world.

There are several good young spinners coming thru the age group. What they need is a nextgen of Taylors, Matthews, Dottins, that is a hard one but fingers crossed

A really good assessment

I owe a Dottin an apology. I wanted to know how she walked right back in after a two year absence. She showed me why.

For awhile with all the diving taking place, in the men game, on the football field, the women game was much more attractive in every sense of the word.

Are you sure, sure, sure you didn't watch 2016 final when WI were double Champs and women's game was just before the men? Sure?

I was surprised to see Taylor in the X1 after she retired while batting earlier in the tournament.
This format needs fit players.

she is a fighter...she is now 32 and with better health she still has much to offer, especially at this transitional stage

This is sports, not a Desk job.
Do you say an injured Taylor is better than the player she replaced?
Leave age and experience out of the conversation. From the time I saw her hobbling on the field earlier in the tournament and then opening the inning, I wondered what the hell was going on.
If you tell me, that Taylor, on one leg, is better than most of the other players, I would say you watched many blind people matches.

yes to Taylor being better than anyone on the sidelines - Gajnabi, et al...

once she is fit to some extent she is still better than most in the WI

and why can she not aspire to greater fitness now? 32 is no age , it is the peak for many

once she is fit

There was a match in which Taylor was hobbling on the field; she was replaced, then opened the inning, and had to retire.
She was a cheerleader in the next match, then returned to the starting X1 with the same injury.
That selection makes absolutely no sense.

Same injury, different stage of healing. Basic commonsense. We didn't need the commies to mention she was moving better, we saw it. Shemar bowled down Oz with the same injury...treated and 1 day later. Yuh smarter than that

That makes some sense. They bowl a lot slower than men which gives the ball time to swing
