Rohit and Gambhir had a big smile earlier as they walked out to inspect the pitch. India have been in this position before - they lost the first Test against England recently, only to bounce back in style. They haven't lost a single series at home since 2012, winning 18 on the bounce.

the modern batters continue to struggle when it spins...
Washington Sundar could be the future Ashwin, but it looks like T20 cricket is starting to affect India's batters
From the Hindian press...
First time in 23 years! India register an unwanted feat in home Tests
And still no sign of the boll weevil.
When will India turn off the lights?
In reply to imusic
The ICC should take over the preparation of pitches. I am EXTREMELY HAPPY it's turning back (OOPS! No puns) and bite them in their asses,
but it's not a level playing field.

India 178-7 and staring down the barrel of defeat.
Gill is another Rahul...plays the occasional good innings, but not consistent enough to be in the XI.
Has age finally caught up with Nohit Sharma?
Congratulations NZ!
Fixed wicket didn't help India as much as Pakistan.
I guess the boll(s) weevil is hiding in the Mumbai sewers!

Dude you want the BICCI to control the pitches?!?!?!?
I say, send Kholi and company to Pakistan to learn how fi play good spin bowling, they should look and learn how Pak played the English spinners and won the test.Wot ah ting, Indian batsmen cyah play spin.Talk about falling in yuh own trap.

this has been so for years now.
India became obsessed with fast bowling... .. their bowlers and batsmen.
hey have fast bowlers today....and their batsmen pride themselves in being able to play fast bowers
But where are the young spinners...looks like all young bowlers want to bowl fast OR young spinners are not being given a chance?
Watch India do well in OZ
BUt
Kohli, Rohi t, Ashwin and Jadeja must park up now
In reply to Halliwell
What U saying man, they R already prepin the pitches?
2 years ago i suggested CWI look for someone like Rangana Herath to work with our lefties
