England allrounder set to feature on white-ball tour to country where he grew up Bethell was born and raised in Barbados but moved to the UK aged 12, attending Rugby School on a sports scholarship. He is one of three players in England's 14-man squad with links to Barbados, along with Phil Salt - who attended Harrison College, the same school as Bethell, while living there as a teenager - and Jofra Archer, who was born and raised there.
In the twilight of my life, brings back memories of my days at HC--was all boys --was a classmates and scholarship rival of (later PM) Sandiford ...in a visit to Bim a few years ago was proud to visit HC and show my now departed wife, children and grandchildren my name on a plaque in the assembly hall among the runners-up (Hawkins Prize winners) to the annual 5 Barbados scholars ( I was #6)
Can remember being let out early to walk with classmate to Kensington Oval to see the greats like Three Ws, Hutton, Lindwall, Neil Harvey, Miller, Sobers , Collie Smith etc
One of the thrills among us was during pre-game warm-up to try to identify the players since we would have seen only old photos as a guide.. " That couldn''t be Worrel, he is too short,, that must be Weekes .." etc
Fond memories
