while it is a big privilege for him to be selected for WI AT 17 it is somewhat frustrating for him to be seated on the bench while first class cricket is being played in WI, young cricketers get very
little first class competition in the Caribbean, I can't help thinking he really will better off on the actual field of play

While your point is taken,

It is List A, not first class.

Allbeit, good point.
That's the dilemma that many faced, when you have tours at the same time as local competition.

I have to disagree here. The experience he will gain from practicing in an international setup is invaluable. He is working out in the nets with the best bowlers in the Caribbean, taking part in fielding and fitness drills all at another level. Also he could make his 2nd appearance should WI go up 2-0 or someone unfortunately gets injured.

Add to that he will not miss all of the Super50 as the ODI series ends on Wednesday and Leewards play Windwards on Friday and 2 more games thereafter.

In reply to bird He is only 17 so a lot of cricket to play and with word of a U-23 tournament even more cricket. We agree to disagree but I think he is in the right place.

My first question is on what basis was he selected for WI Team. This will another case where we don’t let our talents mature properly by building proper foundation but rushing them too fast

According to some, he’s the second Garfield Sobers in the making!

They will never learn!

He averages 55 at LIST A yes in only 5 matches but that's about the length of a SUPER 50 season. Its primarily about potential and players have been selected in the past based on potential.

Against what quality bowling he averaged 55 against? Did he get at least a century?

What happened to those players that were selected on potential in the past? The most successful I can think of is Marlon Samuels, which isn’t much to talk about.

We gotta be honest with ourselves.

Yes he has 143 his highest score vs emerging Ireland who beat the WI- Academy 3-0. Michael Holding was selected on potential wasn't he? Fidel Edwards as well. Marlon Samuels was left wanting not necessarily because of talent but because of attitude.

If I was Sammy I would drop Brandon King, let Keacy Carty open and bring the youngster in.

This imho a generational talent and he needs to ve given as much experience and exposure at the higher level.

You realise you do not have to be a great batsman to be a great coach right? BTW Reifer dominated at regionals but just could not convert at International level.

Dude Marlon Samuels finished with a decent record in all formats. Especially considering what we’ve had in the last decade or so.

Fidel Edwards, another player selected on potential, also did decent, considering his bowling style and all the injuries he had.

Jewel has talent but I am in the camp that says that he should mature at regional level first. Carrying water for the ODI squad when he could be batting for Leewards makes no sense to me. If they know that they will not pick him, release him to play for his team and get some time in the middle as another ODI series is coming up and there should still be competition for spots. How can he compete for a spot against Bangla if he has just been a reserve while other players like Greaves, Wickham, Imlach, Jangoo etc are making runs???? Is that fair to them? Is it fair to him?

Reifer also made a huge impact with the bat in the 2009 WICB four-day competition, scoring 1002 runs with three centuries and five fiftie

Being in the dugout and learning from the senior players will help his game... He's only 17 and have lots cricket ahead of him...
