Cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar has sensationally claimed Rohit Sharma should be stripped of the Indian captaincy ahead of his side's upcoming Test series against Australia.

India selectors have not confirmed if the opening batsman will be available for the opening Test at the Optus Stadium on Friday, November 22.

It is understood that the 37-year-old will not travel with the rest of the squad, who are set to depart for Australia on Monday.

Jasprit Bumrah is expected to step up as the India captain in his place, with Sharma choosing to remain at home for the birth of his second child with his partner Ritika Sajdeh.

Coach Gautam Gambhir said during his pre-departure press conference that he was still 'hopeful' Sharma would be available for the first Test in Perth.

I think Rohit should be sacked as well. Not for that though. His position became untenable the minute India got whitewashed at home. No Indian team in history has had the amount of resources he has had and they still lost 3-0 at home.

As much as I want any Indian skipper to get fired, Gavaskar can go back to the Stone Age with his dotish thinking.

Gavaskar getting like all old cricketers: crotchety and critical. But I still believe rohit and gambir’s positions are untenable after a home whitewash. But Gavaskar talking rubbish. Just now he’ll say in my days yuh had to eat every grain of rice at a 45 degree angle or yuh had to start over and dais why the youth so indisciplined
