From a virus in our squalor lock ups aka prisons. Between the bad food and the unsanitary conditions we violate human rights daily.

To be fair, the colonialists left the country with a better infrastructure than what obtains today!

Additionally, there was less crime and violence, and society, in general, was not as coarse, hostile, and boorish!

When Jamaica became independent in 1962, its debt was modest, around 20% of its GDP, but by 2013, it was 147% of its GDP!

Jamaica's debt-to-GDP ratio is expected to be 67.88% in 2024, the lowest level in 25 years!

Of course, one can argue about the pros and cons of those figures, but when I listened to old-timers talk, it seemed like Jamaica was a paradise back then.

Here again, it depends on the metrics and the lens one uses!

My bet lockups and prisons were better!

When we skim surfaces and avoid nuances they are happy we fall in that trap. How many high school places were there, literacy rate, access to their markets for our goods.% of earnings kept in JA for Jamaicans?
Same trick they use to explain Haiti, not a word about France's theft. Tings ruff but will always be harder to achieve parity if the real truths aren't explred, accepted and addressed/fixed fairly.

Did England offer a prison, why?

Andrew is stupid; he should have taken the prison offered! Today, he can't even erect a new one, thus the overcrowding!

The trick is that today, the high school-to-population ratio may be the same as it was in colonial times!

Back then, primary school kids were fluent in Latin and English—ask old-timers!

Not all was honkey-dory back then, but people generally had better peace of mind and felt safer!

So by your increasingly twisted logic, because a handful of our political leaders in the diaspora are horrible, this somehow precludes us from demanding reparation for 500 years of enslavement that built the western world?

The ultra right wingers- the white Christian nationalists in the USA and Europe will be so proud of you.

But I digress!

Jamaica is the topic of contention!

I was never a supporter of a prison system...things like that were authored by our colonial masters.
After Independence we should have moved to change things..Only murderers and those up on
such charges and a threat to a functions of the government should be locked up.
Others should be on house arrest where they take care of all their regular duties and report morning
and evening to a place set like a police station which keeps record and monitor them. This way the tax payer is
spared much of the burden and cost to house, give them 3 squares a day plus other benefits that even
the general populace cannot afford.
Non appearance will result in added time on the sentences.A system should have been created, perfected
and administered. Strong, healthy men and women should not be put to waste in prison when they
can be productive.
An alternative is to set them duties to clean the roadways and byways, plant trees and work on
special farms to grow produce as well as beautification projects.....
An added feature should be the embrace of compensation to victims..e.g if it is for stealing a man's jack ass or cow, he
compensates three times its value..2 parts to the victim/family and the part to the government o take care of
costs involved.. Would there be any incentives to steal...USAIN's and other people's money would be more than safe.

To satisfy those oppose to capital punishment , the system of compensation would also apply BUT with even more
harsh reality..The convicted one would automatically become responsible for the Victim and his/her family and work
to take care of them for a set time and if children are involved, until they are all beyond 18 years old making sure they get their education
healthcare etc etc..
That compensatory matter would be huge and since it will apply to everyone, more than a game changer. PM's and all politicians must
divulge the source and authenticity of their wealth.lol
I wonder who in Jamaica would dare to even broach this. But I can dream, can't I. ????

You Sir are a real progressive. Notice how all of us former colonies in Africa, Asia and The Caribbean brig out the army on their people as you blink?
Can’t think out of the colonial box to realize that The Colonialist don’t bring out the army on their own people at home. We needed to create our own template but instead adopt what was in fact a system to oppress the colonized subjects…state of emergency as you blink!

Prisons are plagued by inadequate funding, and while I am not familiar with the administration of prisons, I would not be surprised to find, corrupt management on top of that. BTW murderers are now given bail.

I know..it is something that has become one of the biggest subjects of discussion
among a small group of Yardies here in Philly whenever we meet..
It always bring outrage.
Never thought I would see that in Jamaica. But the world has changed . Capital punishment is still
on the books there but has ceased to be effected for decades.
Any law not being applied should be taken off the books. But that is our Yard. Nothing matters.
Citizens should not be exacting revenge as that seems to be accounting for many murders too.

No, prison is a good place to lock people away for their infractions!

The problem is we warehouse people instead of rehabilitate them!

I believe some of the most creative and innovative people can be found in prisons!

It’s a question of how you harness and channel the mindset of your Human Resources!

There is a germ of your model in the US, not sure whether it would work in Jamaica given the level of corruption!

That said, Jamaica needs to rethink its prison system, but I wouldn’t hold my breath!

There is always hell on earth for the poor - it’s depressing!!

BTW murderers are now given bail.

I suspect that the reason for this is that it takes forever for cases to be tried in Jamaica. I observed the first day of a Supreme Court murder trial in Kingston back in 2010. The murder had occurred in 2000 and the victim was a police officer. The accused had been imprisoned for 6 years prior to trial before the judge had some mercy and released him from prison. Justice delayed is justice denied and all that ...

I think there a was Privy Council ruling that forced the bail issue, you are so right, by the time cases come to trial half the people involved are dead or migrated.
