The good old days when cricket was the soul of the Caribbean, and a myriad of Calypsoes emerged to describe every aspect of it. Those were the days when the lives of West Indians were intertwined with cricket. That is the spirit some of us come with when we comment on West indies Cricket. The calypsonian's work could not be complete without incorporating calypso into his repertoire. From comedy to pan, jump up and social commentary, calypso was used to manifest our love for cricket, a love that is beyond pocket deep. Calypsonians celebrated the exploits of the cricketers, and they condemned their exploitation as well. And, when they did, they were always representing the views and the will of the people. It is no surprise that the anthem for West Indies cricket is a calypso. One of my favourites is "Kerry Parker" by Mighty Sparrow, a classic. Mighty Allrounder has one called "Lloyd Say" with same message but simpler. Cricket game in the Jungle by The Trade Winds: Vivian Richards by King Short Shirt. They are all on you tube for those who wish to learn West Indies Cricket history up to a point.

Then, calypsonians stopped singing cricket calypsos, because they no longer represented us. The late calypsonian, Maestro must be turning and twisting in agony in his grave. When he left we were on a rapid upswing, the peak he never lived to see.
