An anticlimax conclusion to what has been an exciting and competitive CG United Super50 Cup 2024, with both finalists, Barbados Pride and Jamaica Scorpions forfeiting the final.

Consequently, Cricket West Indies has announced that there is no champion for this year's competition. The tournament’s organizers made the announcement following a heavily rain-affected match day.

This year’s Champions were set to receive prize money of US$100,000; while the runners-up would have received US$50,000. Both semi-finalists will be rewarded US$ 25,000 each.

With an initial scheduled start of 1:00 PM, scattered showers began at the ground around midday, forcing the first indefinite delay to the start of proceedings. Match referee Reon King, in conjunction with the umpiring team, informed both teams that the latest possible start time was 6:17 PM, at which point the game would be played as a 20-overs-a-side contest.

According to the playing conditions applicable to the Tournament, if no play was possible at all—or in the event of a tie, no result, or game abandonment—both teams would be declared co-winners of the tournament.

However, around 5:45 PM, the officiating team determined that the game could proceed at the latest possible start time of 6:17 PM. They informed the players of this and that the toss would be conducted at 6:00 PM.

Both teams appear to have miscalculated.

Now they both end up with nadas.

These people are the WICB are real criminals. No champion crowned and they both get a miserly $25K? SMH. So the other 50K is pocketed?

They could have played. The rules apparently allowed for it.

The match officials told both teams they are ready to play. They both refused to take the field. Instead they shake hands thinking they would share prize $$.

They were either given bad advice or they just plain dotish.

It is decisions like this one that have WI cricket in the state it is in. CWI, in the interest and development of the teams, should have consider rescheduling the game in the first instance or sharing the crown. Who wants to see a rush T20 finals after an extended ODI competition. The world is laughing at CWI and our players. Sometimes, it is best to make a common sense decision. How much could conditions improved, it was bad from 1 pm to 6 pm but between 6 pm and 6:17 pm, playing conditions were now fit for purpose. If you are starting play with a 60 over deficit, conditions are bad. This look like a behind the scene management decision to get the game done and dusted. It is said to be unprecedented, yet both teams were punish. The teams played some decent cricket, why should 2024 be blank. Give the players their crown. I accept what was said about the rules, however, the time line appears suspect and therefore the safety and decision of the players is more important.

The teams thought they could get an easy payday by refusing to take the field when instructed to do so.

They thought wrong

CWI should be ashamed.

First: If you want first class performance and development, it starts with leadership.
Poor governance and management continues.
Where is the reserve day, knowing that this is the rainy season.
Even Bim weak-ass 40 over finals has a reserve day.

Second, how the hell was the conditions safe?
I watched some of the live show.
I saw players walking around and testing the ground near the wicket.
Their shoes were sinking in the field, so how is that safe?

Third; I know that the umpires and referees has the power.
How did they communicate to the cappos?
Just say we starting at 617pm and that's that.
Was the decision based on the last time before a washout?
Who here do not believe that they were pressured by someone from CWI,
who wanted to get their sponsorship/tv show monies?

Bottomline:
This is a big sh*t show and CWI will continue to be looked upon as a big joke organization.
No wonder people not attending games nor supporting them.

CWI need to know how the fans feel.

After all it's our cricket too.

There's no way after that amount of rain that entire field was fit for play. After so many rained out games why was there no reserve day??

I can't blame the players if they think conditions are not up to the mark. Because the team which lost the toss would definitely be at a disadvantage from ball one. Especially if there was more rain.

Cricket West Indies might be digging themselves into a whole here.
