You’ll have to take it up with the book’s author. Lester Subnaik who gives the answer as 50.

Him, Cheeks and stumpcam may all be wrong. It could happen.

Simple question.

If 50 persons buy 4 markers to get 2 free , how many freeness will there be?

It's that simple.

The answer is as simple as *dividing the number of freenesses (80) by the number of freenesses entitled (2) if you purchase 4 markers.*

This is 40 sets of 4 =160 + 80. All markers were sold individually.

All along, I tort you were a bright fella.

You are giving me poster bravos Mexican bridge maths.

During a sale, markers cost $4.00 each. For every 4 markers purchased, the customers received 2 free. If 80 markers were given free and the sales totaled $840.00, how many individual markers were purchased?

(No one purchased more than 4 markers.)

Are the markers- Latino, African American, or some other people group?

What are the pollsters saying?

The answer suggests it was only possible to buy either one or four markers in any purchase. But that is not stipulated in the question.

I agree with the ambiguity but even then an answer of 50 should have been cast aside instantly.

total cost = 840
total units sold =840/4=210
free units=80
(units of 4) sold = 2x80 = 160
individual unit sales = 210-160 =50

If 80 units are given free units and for every package of 4 two units are given free. How many packages of 4 would have been sold?

To get 80 free units 40 packages of 4 would have to be sold.

................

If 50 packages of 4 were sold the freeness would be 100.

And 50 cannot be the total number of markers sold.

Buy 4 and get 2 free.

Just saw this...

Here is the answer since VIX is as dumb as boboolee ( mexican Bridge)

During a sale, markers cost $4.00 each. For every 4 markers purchased, the customers received 2 free.
If 80 markers were given free and the sales totaled $840.00, how many individual markers were purchased?

(No one purchased more than 4 markers.)

Markers cost: $4.00 each
For every 4 markers purchased, customers receive 2 free.
Total free markers: 80
Total sales: $840.00

The total number of purchased markers
For each set, 4 markers are purchased. Therefore, the total number of purchased markers is:

Purchased markers = 40 sets×4 markers per set=160 markers
The total cost of the purchased markers can be calculated as follows:
Total cost = Purchased markers x Cost per marker = 160×4=640 dollars

160 markers

This means that customers received an additional $200 worth of free markers.
To reach the total sales of $840, customers must have paid for $640 worth of markers and received $200 worth of free markers.

According to the problem, the total sales amount to $840.
Since the total cost of the purchased markers is $640, this indicates that the difference must be accounted for by additional purchases.

If such occurred:

Let’s find out how many additional markers were purchased to reach a total of $840:
Additional sales: $840−$640 = 200 dollars

Additional markers
200 divided by 4 = 50 markers

Now, add the additional markers to the initially calculated purchased markers:

Total purchased markers 160+50 = 210 markers
The total number of individual markers purchased is 210.

It deleted my response ....ok here I will calculate it again....twisted

Fellas making "a mountain out of a mole hill."

If 80 units are given free it means that you must sell 160 (2:1 aliquot).

80 + 160 = 240 (total sold) or taken out of inventory.

Forget about the $4.00 cost. It is not the selling price. It just means there is a discount on the original cost of the markers.

Dollar amount of sales = 840.00

Divided by the individual units = 840/240 = 3.50 (discount of 50 cents on each marker).

..............................

The question is to introduce the student to the concept of discount.

All the complicated methodoloy above sought to do is simply divide the total cost of sales ($840) by the unit cost of $4.00 to arrive at 210.

Is that what the question sought to achieve?

Yuh nuh easy ah rasta castle!!

How many markers were purchased, yep it's 210, but that's not the question.

How many markers were INDIVIDUALLY purchased, that is the question. For every purchase of 4 you get 2 free. For any other purchase quantity you get no free ones.

Based on the question there are two options re marker purchase:

1. Any quantity between 1 and 3 @ $4 per unit
2. A 4 pack @$4 per ,marker ie $16 but you get 2 additional 'free'.

The sales number of $840 refers to money collected based on the pricing and the incentive to buy the 4 pack.

The number of individual markers (the question posed) refers to item 1 above.

Its a question for a class with 11 year olds.

Another attempt

The question seems to be asking how many non-bulk ( less than 4 in a pack) were sold ...that is, in quantities of 1, 2 or 3

40 4-packs were sold = 160 units

total units sold = 840/4=210

160x4= 640 = cost of 40 4 packs

210-160 = 50 single units (1,2,or 3)

Also 840-640= 200

200/4=50

Either way answer seems to be 50

Although not asked, total units offered should be

bulk 160
single 50
free 80
total 290

Am I to assume that no free markers were included in any package purchased?.

40 groups of 4 markers

50 bought in 1,2,or 3 numbers

e.g 16 people each bought 3, ....2 people bought 1 each or any other distribution of 50 ( no more than 3 per person)

50 purchased either as 1 or 2 together or 3 together...it does not matter. as long as it's not 4.

Reposting my solution:

A quick scratch of paper gave 50 individual markers?

There are 2 free for every group of 4 purchased which totaled 80 'free' => 80/2 = 40 sets of 4 were purchased

so individual # of groups of 4 => 4 x 40 = 160 markers purchased as groups of 4

Therefore, $4*160 + $4*M1 = $840 where M1 is number sold as individual markers

solve for M1 => 4M1 = 840 -640

4M1 = 200

M1 = 50
