Indian teen Gukesh Dommaraju becomes the youngest chess world champion after beating Chinese rival

NEW DELHI — (AP) — Indian teenager Gukesh Dommaraju became the youngest chess world champion Thursday after beating the defending champion Ding Liren of China in the final match of their series in Singapore.

Dommaraju, 18, secured 7.5 points against 6.5 of his Chinese rival in the contest, surpassing the achievement of Russia’s Garry Kasparov who won the title at the age of 22.

The Indian teen prodigy has long been considered a rising star in the chess world after he became a chess grandmaster at 12. He had entered the match as the youngest-ever challenger to the world crown after winning the Candidates tournament earlier this year.

He took the record from my fellow alumnus Kasparov. Kasparov visited the university at the time he was world number one. He played 20 of the university’s best players. A few of them were Soviet national champions and he beat all of them simultaneously. I was in the audience wanted to see him. The boy is bad ass, but he’s nerdy.

Today’s chess players are probably the best in history, thanks to their unlimited access to practice games and other training resources at their fingertips.
That being said. Gukesh has to come real good to dethrone the real GOAT - Magnus!

Congrats to Gukesh!

Carlssen relinquished his title three years ago, when Ding won the candidates tournament. Carlssen chose not to defend, and Ding became champ.

Now, Gukesh has beaten Ding to become the first teenager to win the title, I think.

I believe Anand is one of Gukesh's mentors.

I doubt any chess follower would suggest that either Ding or Gukesh is better than Magnus.
