Australia vs India, 3rd Test - The Gabba
India have won the toss and have opted to field
It was an unusually cool welcome to Brisbane a couple of days ago, but while the rain has stayed away since, leading to two steamy days in Queensland, the showers have returned by the night before the Test. And the forecast over the next few days isn't the most promising, even if the locals are convinced that good weather will prevail. The conditions overhead on Saturday morning will have a big bearing on what the captain winning the toss decides, while the surface below will come up for a lot of discussion as is the norm in Brisbane. The ultra-green nature of the pitch has given way to a slightly less intimidating on the eve of the Test.
We're going to bowl first. Little bit overcast and little bit of grass, looks a bit soft as well, want to make best use of the conditions. Lot of cricket to be played, both teams have played good cricket in the last two games. Big game for us here, we'll do what is expected of us. We'll play good cricket, we understand we have to capture some moments, we didn't do that in the previous game which is why we lost. It's absolutely buzzing, the guys are looking forward to the match, we're looking forward to coming out here and playing. Looks a little soft at this point in time, conditions bit overcast as well, it will get better to bat as it goes on. We've made two changes, Jadeja and Akash back in place of Ashwin and Harshit.
We would've bowled first too. Been a fantastic series so far. Really happy with last week, just about everyone got into the series, been a good lead-up. Preperations have been pretty good. Early finish in Adelaide allowed us to come up here early and get settled. Just one change, Scott Boland is out for Hazlewood.
Khawaja is on strike.
Bumrah will open the attack

We're 10 minutes away from tea and it's fair to say that the entire 2nd session has been a washout. Will we get any more cricket today? Looking pretty bleak as it stands
This was inevitable. With rain unrelenting, play has been called off on Day 1 after just 13.2 overs of cricket. We'll have early starts for the rest of the Test match with a view to make up for some of the lost time today. 98 overs to be bowled and we'll hopefully get a full day of cricket tomorrow.
The most profound line last night
CA confirm there is a full refund of tickets today as less than 15 overs were bowled.
Clear and concise.

Bumrah to Khawaja, out Caught by Pant!! There's the edge and Bumrah has produced the breakthrough for India. An absolute peach, pitched up in that channel around off, draws Khawaja forward into the defensive push, he's playing for the natural angle, but this one straightens wickedly, opens him up with the angle and catches the edge of the forward prod, straightforward catch to the keeper - everyone heard the sound and off walks Khawaja. Just the start India wanted to the day.

Akash Deep to McSweeney, FOUR, edged and four, Akash Deep finally makes McSweeney play, finds the edge and it races away wide of gully, fuller length delivery and singing away from wide of off, drew McSweeney into a hard-handed drive and squirted away wide of the cordon, was in the air and right in the gap as well
18.3
Bumrah to McSweeney, out Caught by Kohli!! Edged and caught! Bumrah has got rid of both openers now - this is another corker, short of a good length and angling back into the right-hander, McSweeney pressed half-forward on the back-foot defence, but he doesn't really cover the line, gets a thick edge and it flies straight into the hands of Kohli at second slip. India have been so good with their line and lengths today, the correction has come and they've rewarded with a couple of early wickets.

Nitish Reddy to Labuschagne, out Caught by Kohli!! Edged and gone! The tension was building at the other end and Labuschagne sought for a release here, was pitched up full and outside off and Labuschagne thought he had a nice drive-ball, he went after it with hard hands and could only manage a thick outside edge. It flew quickly to Kohli's right at 2nd slip and he took a sharp catch. Wicket at a crucial moment for India, the partnership was just starting to consolidate, now Australia have to start over. Nicely thought out by Reddy too.
Labuschagne c Kohli b Nitish Reddy 12(55)

Siraj to Smith, no run, India will keep the review but only just! Good length delivery outside off, nipped back in quite sharply and rapped Smith just above the knee-roll on the back pad as he shouldered arms, Siraj was absolutely convinced he got his man, pleaded with his skipper to go upstairs and he did, ball-tracker shows that it was just clipping off-stump on umpire's call

Yep
Just a light drizzle now
Oh no, Siraj doesn't look happy. Something wrong with the left knee or hamstring, he knew it straightaway after bowling the previous ball, tried to stretch it out and called for the physio as he went to the top of his mark. This is not good news for India at all, Siraj is leaving the field
Akash Deep [9.0-4-20-0] is back into the attack
36.3
Akash Deep to Smith, no run
Damn Siraj injured
36.3
Akash Deep to Smith, no run, massive appeal and turned down! This was close, pitched right up on off-stump, angled in and went right through before crashing into his back leg, there were two sounds though and while it looked absolutely plumb, he just got an inside edge on that, Rohit was hesitant to review and decided against it, good call again but that was mighty close
Jasprit Bumrah [11.0-6-12-2] is back into the attack
AUS 85/3 (37.1) CRR: 2.29
37.4
Bumrah to Head, FOUR, glorious timing! Pitched up just a fraction too full, Head pressed forward and nailed it through extra cover, driven on the up, timed perfectly and placed into the gap
Meanwhile, Siraj is back on the field

Bumrah to Head, FOUR, cheeky and four, banged in short and just outside off - Head arches back slightly, opens the face of the bat and then runs it over slips, couple of bounces and over the ropes
Ravindra Jadeja, Left arm orthodox, comes into the attack
48.1
Jadeja to Head, 2 runs, flighted delivery on middle and leg, Head lets the ball come and then flicks it fine, to the long leg boundary and he's back for the second
48.5
Jadeja to Head, FOUR, clubbed, that's a poor ball from RJ, darted flat and down leg, Head goes back and helps it on its way with the fine pull, races away to the long leg boundary

Akash Deep to Smith, FOUR, creamed, that'll give him plenty of confidence, a rare half-volley today by an Indian bowler - Smith prods across, presents the full face of the bat and then punches it back past the non-striker for a boundary
India reviewed fat because Smith looks so ugly when squared-up you have to think he’s out

Jadeja to Smith, 1 run, loud cheers as Smith gets to fifty, tossed up full on middle, Smith knocks it towards a deep-ish mid-on and gets across, measured celebration from Smith, just a raise of the bat to acknowledge the applause

India's bane Travis Head notches up another spectacular and game-changing hundred! Bumrah goes for the yorker on middle, ends up being a low full-toss that Head whips through wide mid-on, they get back for three and the crowd rises to applaud, Head takes off his helmet and perches it on the bat handle, raises both up and celebrates

Mitchell Starc to Shubman Gill, out Caught by Mitchell Marsh!! Edged and gone! Marsh is on a celebratory run! 138.5kph, full and angled across the right-hander. The line is well outside off and Gill chases it for a big booming drive well away from his body. The ball flies off the outside edge and Marsh leaps to his left at gully to snaffle it with both hands. Superb catch and India are under tremendous pressure. Cummins to Rahul, no run, edged and dropped, that could have been the perfect start to the day for Australia, a sitter and somehow Smith has dropped it at 2nd slip, he's aghast and even KL has his hands on his head. A loose shot to start the day, back of a length and climbing across the right-hander, Rahul has a needless poke and gets a thick edge, straight in and out of Smith's hands, came at a very good height and somehow the Indian opener survives. A big big let-off?

Cummins to Rohit, out Caught by Carey!! Loose, very loose and the Indian captain falls. Probing line and length from Cummins, pitched up in that channel just outside off and draws Rohit forward, he's very tentative,
the feet is rooted to the crease and he only manages a thin edge, straight into the gloves of Carey and he doesn't drop those. Rohit's woes continue and India have lost half their side. Rohit c Carey b Cummins 10

Lyon to Rahul, out Caught by Smith!! That's an unbelieveable catch! Smith has made amends and how! KL Rahul's vigil has been cut short, he batted really nicely but he misses out on another hundred. Flatter length delivery just outside off, Rahul pressed back looking to slash it away through point, was just that touch quicker and straighter which meant it took a thick outside edge. It flew rapidly to Smith's right, outstanding reactions from him as he flung himself to his right and plucked it out with one hand. That was nearly past him when he caught it.

That is why stats has to be taken in context. Australia was going for broke, wickets were sacrificed for quick runs.
