India have won the toss and have opted to field

Narper 2024-12-13 23:59:45

What to expect:
It was an unusually cool welcome to Brisbane a couple of days ago, but while the rain has stayed away since, leading to two steamy days in Queensland, the showers have returned by the night before the Test. And the forecast over the next few days isn't the most promising, even if the locals are convinced that good weather will prevail. The conditions overhead on Saturday morning will have a big bearing on what the captain winning the toss decides, while the surface below will come up for a lot of discussion as is the norm in Brisbane. The ultra-green nature of the pitch has given way to a slightly less intimidating on the eve of the Test.

Narper 2024-12-14 00:00:59

Rohit Sharma:
We're going to bowl first. Little bit overcast and little bit of grass, looks a bit soft as well, want to make best use of the conditions. Lot of cricket to be played, both teams have played good cricket in the last two games. Big game for us here, we'll do what is expected of us. We'll play good cricket, we understand we have to capture some moments, we didn't do that in the previous game which is why we lost. It's absolutely buzzing, the guys are looking forward to the match, we're looking forward to coming out here and playing. Looks a little soft at this point in time, conditions bit overcast as well, it will get better to bat as it goes on. We've made two changes, Jadeja and Akash back in place of Ashwin and Harshit.

Narper 2024-12-14 00:01:28

Pat Cummins:
We would've bowled first too. Been a fantastic series so far. Really happy with last week, just about everyone got into the series, been a good lead-up. Preperations have been pretty good. Early finish in Adelaide allowed us to come up here early and get settled. Just one change, Scott Boland is out for Hazlewood.

Narper 2024-12-14 00:22:13

Khawaja and McSweeney are at the crease.

Khawaja is on strike.

Bumrah to Khawaja, no run, 130kph, full and straight on leg-stump, Khawaja pats it tamely towards mid-wicket, no swing or seam on that one

Day 1: Rain stops play

10:45 Local Time, 00:45 GMT, 06:15 IST: A drizzle has picked up quite suddenly and it's strong enough to force them off. "Scattered showers" is what the weather report says and it shouldn't be any sort of sustained rain.

AUS 19/0 (5.3) CRR: 3.45

Narper 2024-12-14 01:10:28

11:04 Local Time, 01:04 GMT, 06:34 IST: The covers are coming off. There are some dark clouds over to one side of the ground but the drizzle seems to have stopped. We should get back underway in less than 10 minutes. Yep, 10 minutes is what the umpires signalled to the captains. Restart at 11:15am local (6:45am IST).

Narper 2024-12-14 01:17:50

5.5
Siraj to Khawaja, FOUR, dispatched to the boundary! Second time he's played this shot, just a fraction short and Khawaja jumps on it, he hangs back and heaves it away over square leg this time

11:55 Local Time, 01:55 GMT, 07:25 IST: A lot of intensity in this spell of rain. The groundstaffs are nailing the covers to ensure that they do stay in place. The original lunch break was at 12:20 pm. I'll not be surprised if they do take it on time.

In reply to Narper

We're 10 minutes away from tea and it's fair to say that the entire 2nd session has been a washout. Will we get any more cricket today? Looking pretty bleak as it stands

shivnotout 2024-12-14 08:56:31

This was inevitable. With rain unrelenting, play has been called off on Day 1 after just 13.2 overs of cricket. We'll have early starts for the rest of the Test match with a view to make up for some of the lost time today. 98 overs to be bowled and we'll hopefully get a full day of cricket tomorrow.

Chrissy 2024-12-14 11:58:22

The most profound line last night

CA confirm there is a full refund of tickets today as less than 15 overs were bowled.

Clear and concise.

Narper 2024-12-15 00:08:30

16.1
Bumrah to Khawaja, out Caught by Pant!! There's the edge and Bumrah has produced the breakthrough for India. An absolute peach, pitched up in that channel around off, draws Khawaja forward into the defensive push, he's playing for the natural angle, but this one straightens wickedly, opens him up with the angle and catches the edge of the forward prod, straightforward catch to the keeper - everyone heard the sound and off walks Khawaja. Just the start India wanted to the day.

17.1
Akash Deep to McSweeney, FOUR, edged and four, Akash Deep finally makes McSweeney play, finds the edge and it races away wide of gully, fuller length delivery and singing away from wide of off, drew McSweeney into a hard-handed drive and squirted away wide of the cordon, was in the air and right in the gap as well

Narper 2024-12-15 00:18:17

18.3
Bumrah to McSweeney, out Caught by Kohli!! Edged and caught! Bumrah has got rid of both openers now - this is another corker, short of a good length and angling back into the right-hander, McSweeney pressed half-forward on the back-foot defence, but he doesn't really cover the line, gets a thick edge and it flies straight into the hands of Kohli at second slip. India have been so good with their line and lengths today, the correction has come and they've rewarded with a couple of early wickets.

33.2
Nitish Reddy to Labuschagne, out Caught by Kohli!! Edged and gone! The tension was building at the other end and Labuschagne sought for a release here, was pitched up full and outside off and Labuschagne thought he had a nice drive-ball, he went after it with hard hands and could only manage a thick outside edge. It flew quickly to Kohli's right at 2nd slip and he took a sharp catch. Wicket at a crucial moment for India, the partnership was just starting to consolidate, now Australia have to start over. Nicely thought out by Reddy too.

Labuschagne c Kohli b Nitish Reddy 12(55)

Narper 2024-12-15 01:40:05

34.3
Siraj to Smith, no run, India will keep the review but only just! Good length delivery outside off, nipped back in quite sharply and rapped Smith just above the knee-roll on the back pad as he shouldered arms, Siraj was absolutely convinced he got his man, pleaded with his skipper to go upstairs and he did, ball-tracker shows that it was just clipping off-stump on umpire's call

Oh no, Siraj doesn't look happy. Something wrong with the left knee or hamstring, he knew it straightaway after bowling the previous ball, tried to stretch it out and called for the physio as he went to the top of his mark. This is not good news for India at all, Siraj is leaving the field

Akash Deep [9.0-4-20-0] is back into the attack

36.3
Akash Deep to Smith, no run, massive appeal and turned down! This was close, pitched right up on off-stump, angled in and went right through before crashing into his back leg, there were two sounds though and while it looked absolutely plumb, he just got an inside edge on that, Rohit was hesitant to review and decided against it, good call again but that was mighty close

Fuller than a length delivery well outside off, that should have been left alone

Gone! It's the familiar mode of dismissal for Kohli. Chasing a wide ball and nicking off. Fuller than a length delivery well outside off, that should have been left alone. Kohli chases it well away from his body for a drive and gets an audible outside edge that's been easily pouched by the keeper. Some of the Australian players are seen appreciating Starc who made a superb stop off the previous ball which brought Kohli on strike.

Lyon to Rahul, out Caught by Smith!! That's an unbelieveable catch! Smith has made amends and how! KL Rahul's vigil has been cut short, he batted really nicely but he misses out on another hundred. Flatter length delivery just outside off, Rahul pressed back looking to slash it away through point, was just that touch quicker and straighter which meant it took a thick outside edge. It flew rapidly to Smith's right, outstanding reactions from him as he flung himself to his right and plucked it out with one hand. That was nearly past him when he caught it.

The Aussies vex with the umpires for taking too long to resume play after the rain breaks. See i started a thread earlier with a link to their bitching ...

Even as India glance at the scoreboard, their enthusiasm will be dampened by just looking up a little higher at the skies, it's not looking great

Down to the bowlers now

Bumrah to Cummins, out Caught by Rahul!! .. and he adds to his wicket-tally, was the slower ball and it completely outfoxes the Australian captain, he's way too early into the slog, the ball catches the toe-edge and went straight up, KL runs back from cover, keeps his eyes on the ball and holds onto thew catch. No declaration as yet, Cummins has a word with Carey as he walks away.

Cummins c Rahul b Bumrah 22(10) [4s-2 6s-2]

“Best match figues by Indian seamers in Australia”

That is why stats has to be taken in context. Australia was going for broke, wickets were sacrificed for quick runs.
