Bethell v Athanaze

Following up on my earlier post. One seems to have found his feet in test cricket on a challenging tour very quickly. The other just does not seem to understand what is needed at this level despite a couple decent scores.

Haven't spotted your previous post.
IMHO both Athanaze and Bethell are equally talented batsmen. However I believe that they have different abilities (at the moment)
I believe that a lot of cricket and particularly batting is played in the mind.
Bethell was not originally selected for this tour and he was a wild card, if he fails...not a problem (either for him or the management), he is free to just go out there and do his thing, virtually consequent free, particularly in thiis England side! If he succeeds......Great ! someone else that can be further developed or called on again.
Athanaze, is supposed to be the next WI superbat, the answer to all our batting woes, when he succeeds...fantastic..well done this is what we should expect all the time (maybe we should ?) If he fails...we analyse he faults and discuss why he should not be playing at this level !!!
Perhaps his lack of clarity, expe tation to always be successful clouds his clarity of thought so that his undoubted talent is not fully turned into his ability to consistently produce the performances and runs his talent deserves.
I believe that this applies to many of our talented players.

Not a fair comparison as both are in the infancy stages of their careers. What I would say is Bethellis coming into a stable batting Unit with tons of experience and greatness around him eg . Joe Root and Sotkes. These are Batsmen who take the attack to the opposition. Who Athanaze got KB?

Give both some time an check and let us review at 20.

Hmmmm. Too much weight of expectation? That can happen to players. In which case, he needs to develop the mental side of his game. I think that he needs to focus in 2025 on the regional FC season and making a bucket of runs again. He had one breakout season (pretty much like Louis) was pushed into the team and still has not found his feet in test cricket after a dozen tests. I want him to succeed and realise his full potential but something in his approach has gone wrong. Perhaps Sammy may work for him in the test arena. Who knows?
