At the end of the just completed test match, he has announced his retirement from the international game.

This is very unusual in the middle of a test series. Something's up.

He must have felt hard done by his drop for this test match

Immediate retirement from all formats of the game. He will not be representing India again.

Certainly, an Indian great. Accomplished with the ball and can hold a bat. Ravichandran Ashwin can walk away with his head held high.

Not the way that such a fine player should leave the game. Nevertheless, what a career. The 38 year old from Chennai finishes with 537 test match wickets, taken at an average of just 24 - phenomenal for an off spinner. His wickets came in 106 tests, during which time he also managed to score 6 centuries to add to his worth as a bowler. He also took over 200 white ball international wickets, playing over 100 ODIs & 65 T20Is.
