Old man winter has arrived in Ontario..with a white Christmas

The temperature is expected to hover around the freezing mark for most of the day on Thursday but Environment Canada is warning of an overnight low of - 5 C that will feel closer to -10 with the wind chill.
The weekend will bring mostly sunny skies but much colder conditions.
Environment Canada is forecasting a high of -8 C on Saturday with an overnight low of -17 C.
On Sunday the temperature will range between -9 C and – 12 C.

“Those flurries (on Friday) are sort of the flood gates of a system in which cold, cold air will come in for the weekend
“It is the kind of air we haven’t experienced in quite a while with a wind chill in the minus 20s on Saturday night.”

Environment Canada says that there will be a risk of hypothermia and frostbite for anyone who finds themselves outside this weekend for an extended period without “adequate protection.

The system is tracking south of Ontario, forcing an easterly wind off Lake Ontario. This setup could bring a stronger band of snowfall to places like Burlington, and to the west end of the GTA, where locally 5-10 cm may fall. This blast of snow will affect Friday travel along major routes including the QEW, Don Valley Parkway (DVP), and the Gardiner Expressway, so make sure you brace for slower commute times.

"Slow down driving in slippery conditions. Watch for taillights ahead and maintain a safe following distance," says ECCC. "If visibility is reduced while driving, turn on your lights and maintain a safe following distance."

Snow squall watches for locally heavy snow near Lake Huron
Lake-effect snow squalls are expected to develop over Lake Huron later Friday night, potentially bringing locally heavy snowfall with accumulations between 10-20+ cm.

Blowing snow and near zero visibility are possible at times in areas that see heavy snow, and travel along Highway 402 will likely be impacted.

The final countdown to the Christmas holidays is upon us, and while it may not be looking or feeling much like it across southern Ontario, things are about to take a much more wintry spin.

Think snow, and the coldest temperatures of the year for some. After a quick blast of snow, which could see 5-10 cm fall Wednesday, snow returns to the forecast to close out the week on Friday.
This is what could be the make or break for a white Christmas for some, especially outside of the snowbelts where it's pretty well a guarantee thanks to the relentless early season squalls.
The best chance of snow will be through the early parts of Friday, with temperatures remaining below freezing. Most of the region should see between 2-5 cm fall, but locally, 5+ cm is possible due to the potential for lake enhancement near the west end of Lake Ontario.

A cold morning on Saturday will also trend into a cold afternoon, with temperatures sitting in the -6°C to -9°C range throughout the GTA, and minus double digit highs north of the region.
Temperatures will feel much colder as wind gusts will peak between 20-40 km/h.So far in 2024, -15.5°C has been the coldest temperature recorded back on January 17. This Saturday, Toronto could drop to -17°C. Barrie will see temperatures plunge into the low -20s, and Ottawa could see its first -20°C temperature reading of the year, as well.
