I learnt early in life that when purchasing such fruits, the skin tells a lot.
The smoother the skin, the better the putegal, orange, tangerine , dongs, plums , chenette, etc
The rough skins tell of a poor season growing on that tree. Nature wasn't kind to some of such fruits.
My bill is in the mail to you for learning ya.

Remember during an Aussie Tour of Caribbean, Richie Benaud came
in the press box raving about the best citrus fruit he has ever tasted...it was some
ortaniques he had from a vendor out of curiosity too...
He feasted on them for the duration of his stay and had other Aussies hooked too.
We found out that the wonderful fruits were from a Manchester.
Can't be beat./

Love it more for flavor than sweetness. There's a claim that Michael Manley gifted Fidel a few seedlings and Cuba now exports tons of it to Europe and Yard doesn't. But dem cyan call it Ugli...the name is owned by who developed it, so dem call it "Unique"...anyone else heard this?

Remember the Ja. Govt. gifting the Israeli Govt. some ortanique plants and there was an outcry against this in some quarters. The outcry was that we should not be gifting something so unique to Jamaica, to another country. Maybe the Cuban story is now being confused with the Israeli gift. Wonder how many ortanique plants are now in Israel. Very open to being corrected and know if my recollection is what really happened.
By the way, if an ortanique is not another name for an ugli then I have never had an ortanique.

Only June plum can compete and dat een citrus
Still call it golden apple and I can eat whole heap one time. I ate so much nasberry/sapodilla growing up - granny had a big tree that I can pass on date. Like most fruit, some otaheite taste better than others.
I eat a lot of them but ortaniques, June plum and Bombay/East Indian mangoes. Funny how the abundance of Julie makes that one ordinary on my list.
