is that what we call pootegal in TT?
In reply to VIX
It is a cross between an orange and a tangerine. One of my favorite, this so-called misfit misses it yuh si
In reply to VIX
More or less
I think there are better subvarieties than others
For instance, a clementine is harder to peel than a putegal
In reply to Halliwell
Hey limey Trini brit...
You get them before they are fully ripe , thus the skin toughness.
In reply to Halliwell
what is a putegal? nearest name to that I know of in Yard is a large squash type vegetable. Are you guys talking about Pomelo that huge grapefruit like citrus fruit?
In reply to Chrissy
I bought two a those from the supermarket recently – s-o-u-r!!!!! Not the JA ortaniques
I use to enjoy as a kid.

Wrong
In reply to Halliwell
Okkkkkkk so you now grow dem in Hingland?
I learnt early in life that when purchasing such fruits, the skin tells a lot.
The smoother the skin, the better the putegal, orange, tangerine , dongs, plums , chenette, etc
The rough skins tell of a poor season growing on that tree. Nature wasn't kind to some of such fruits.
Citrus trees hybridize very readily, giving rise to a very extensive range of cultivars.
It is believed, based on molecular studies, that the citron, pummelo, mandarin, and papeda were the ancestors of all other citrus species and their varieties, which resulted from breeding or natural hybridization among the parental species.
My bill is in the mail to you for learning ya.

Nah, pomelo is quite different, in itself and in its origins.
Putegal is an easy peeler like ortanique

Remember during an Aussie Tour of Caribbean, Richie Benaud came
in the press box raving about the best citrus fruit he has ever tasted...it was some
ortaniques he had from a vendor out of curiosity too...
He feasted on them for the duration of his stay and had other Aussies hooked too.
We found out that the wonderful fruits were from a Manchester.
Can't be beat./
In reply to VIX
No - love dem too
In reply to Chrissy They are good but far too many seeds, I think they are perfect for juicing, the other negative is the skin is very thin, makes it difficult to peel.
In reply to hubert
One lovely fruit
In reply to camos

Manchester, Clarendon, St. Catherine ortanique country, St. James lately. Juicy, sweet easy to peel with either hand or knife. Next Yard citrus Ugli-grapefruit/tangerine cross. Love it more for flavor than sweetness. There's a claim that Michael Manley gifted Fidel a few seedlings and Cuba now exports tons of it to Europe and Yard doesn't. But dem cyan call it Ugli...the name is owned by who developed it, so dem call it "Unique"...anyone else heard this?

Will follow dis up.

Is there a nicer citrus fruit?
1. June plum
2. Otaheite apple
3. Naesberry/ortanique
In reply to Brerzerk
No . But it sounds good. Fidel was always a smart hombre.

Remember the Ja. Govt. gifting the Israeli Govt. some ortanique plants and there was an outcry against this in some quarters. The outcry was that we should not be gifting something so unique to Jamaica, to another country. Maybe the Cuban story is now being confused with the Israeli gift. Wonder how many ortanique plants are now in Israel. Very open to being corrected and know if my recollection is what really happened.
By the way, if an ortanique is not another name for an ugli then I have never had an ortanique.

Only June plum can compete and dat een citrus
Still call it golden apple and I can eat whole heap one time. I ate so much nasberry/sapodilla growing up - granny had a big tree that I can pass on date. Like most fruit, some otaheite taste better than others.
I eat a lot of them but ortaniques, June plum and Bombay/East Indian mangoes. Funny how the abundance of Julie makes that one ordinary on my list.

the second link you provided is showing a sample that makes my point about seeds and skin!
In reply to camos
I find they have way less seeds than oranges or tangerines and yuh need a peeler or knife.
Just had two

Organize and Ugli two distinctly different fruits. By the way one whole Israeli city was once aA Palestinian citrus orchard…perhaps the largest in the world and definitely the largest supplier to Europe. So no surprise if Dem men have large Ortanique farm
i prefer non citrus fruits myself . But i've come to like blood oranges i have not taste a ortanique in years.
