Australia have won the toss and have opted to bat
Pat Cummins:
We gonna have a bat today. There's a bit of a grass like an old MCG wicket. It's been a great series so far. As a child in Australia when you wake up, you have a good night's sleep after Christmas, and you look forward to the first ball. Sam will open the batting and Scott also comes in for Hazlewood.
Rohit Sharma:
We would have batted as well. The series is 1-1, a lot to play for, it gives us a perfect opportunity to show what we are as a team. Whatever situation lies in front of you, you have to fight. It's a new day and we are looking forward to it. We have one change - GIll misses out and Washington comes in.(On whether he will bat at the top of the order?) Yes, I will.

b]Pitch Report | Mark Nicholas and Sunil Gavaskar[/b]:
The heavy roller is doing its bit on the surface. There's a lot of grass on the surface, day 1 pitch, there will be plenty in it for the bowlers. As the sun beats down, batting will become easier. 7mm grass on the surface, it might be slightly tacky at the start. The first couple of hours will be a real test for the batters. The conditions are really hot. 92,000 tickets have been sold and we can't wait to start

Bumrah to Sam Konstas, no run, peach! In the corridor of uncertainty, straightens a touch, Sam Konstas looks to keep it out from the crease but is beaten on the outside edge
2.5
Bumrah to Sam Konstas, no run, oh my word! The audactiy to try a reverse hit to arguably the best red-ball bowler in the world. On a good length around off, Sam Konstas reverses his stance and tries to hit it over the slip cordon but misses. Bumrah has a wry smile on his face

Siraj to Khawaja, no run, India review for a lbw. Khawaja the man in question. He was a fair way down the track. Rohit has a chat with Pant and decides to send it upstairs just before the timer runs out. Khawaja walked down the track to negate the inswing but played down the wrong line to get pinged on the pads. Umpire Michael Gough shook his head to the appeal. Time for the replays. Snicko shows a clear gap between bat and ball. The height is also an issue and it's going over the stumps. Good decision by the umpire. India lose a review

Siraj to Sam Konstas, no run, Sam Konstas once again tries something audacious! Doesn't look good when you don't execute it. Bumrah to Sam Konstas, FOUR, unorthodox but highly effective! Sam Konstas once again moved across his stumps in a bid to go for the conventional scoop. But, the wider line meant that he had to change his thinking. He reverse hits it again over the slip cordon and the ball just bounces in front of the ropes before going over. Seems the Aussie selectors had some plans by playing this youngster.
Fearless is right. Heard the comms discussing him practising his 'scoop'

Refreshingly unconventional for a Test match and on debut too.

The Aussie Think Tank is something else, Chrissy and you are right, the India team
was totally unprepared for this approach by a debutant teenager.
The captain Cummins told him to' have fun and don't over think it'
It was planned and it came off as Bumrah who has given all the top order nightmares, was apparently targeted.
Quite refreshing to see and enjoyable no end

Jadeja to Sam Konstas, out Lbw!! Jadeja ends the entertainment. But the MCG stands to applaud a fine knock. Konstas has put Australia in front on the first morning of the Boxing Day. And he was on debut. This looked out but Konstas has a word with Khawaja and decides against the review. He survived a close LBW appeal in Jadeja's previous over but not this time. The length was fuller and the ball skid across, beat the inside edge as Konstas pressed forward and hit him in front of the stumps.

Akash Deep to Khawaja, FOUR, fifty for Khawaja! This will be a great confidence booster for the veteran! He has been struggling in this series but this knock might just change things for him. Not a fluent knock by any means but he has done well to grind it out and keep going. He raises his bat and gets a good round of applause from the MCG crowd. Akash Deep to Khawaja, FOUR, sublime! Fractionally overpitched outside off, Khawaja shuffles a bit and push-drives it past mid-on. Mid-off and mid-on are after it. The latter puts in a slide near the fence but it goes in vain. The timing was spot on there

But India have a wicket - a much needed one and Bumrah has struck with his first ball of a new spell. An innocuous short of length delivery, Khawaja is a tad early into the pull and toe-ends it straight to short mid-wicket. Even KL, who took the catch, was a little surprised that the ball came to him

Nitish Reddy to Smith, FOUR, Smith reaches his century in style, his 34th in Test cricket, his fifth century at the MCG. This is also his 11th Test century against India, an opposition he loves facing. It has been a brilliant knock from Smith! Scoring a century in the previous game at the Gabba has boosted his confidence and he has cashed in on the momentum. He has played attacking cricket against the spinners and has also kept the scoreboard ticking against the seamers. Jadeja to Mitchell Starc, out Bowled!! Cleaned up! That's a good start to the session. Jadeja takes one ball at Starc and sends him packing. Third wicket for Jadeja.

Cummins to Rohit, out Caught by Boland!! Cummins strikes! Rohit's woeful form continues.. This dismissal just shows how badly he's struggling. It was a nothing delivery and Rohit has gotten out to that. Short of length outside off, easily could have been left alone but Rohit hops on one leg and tries to pull, the attempt is half-hearted and the top-edge goes straight up, Boland runs to his right from mid-on and takes a simple catch.

Boland to Jaiswal, out Jaiswal Run Out!! The exuberance of youth has got the better of Jaiswal here! That was always going to be a risky single and Kohli was not keen on it. Jaiswal is not happy, he was indicating to his senior pro that it was his call while walking off. Australia won't mind it one bit. Just the wicket they needed to charge themselves up. Was a full ball on off, Jaiswal drove it straight to mid-on and set off. Kohli was ball-watching and was near his crease even though Jaiswal kept running. Cummins attacks the ball and hurls in a throw but misses the target at the striker's end. Carey runs in, collects the ball and runs up to the stumps to effect the run-out. Jaiswal didn't even bother to return back. A brilliant knock from Jaiswal nonetheless. Jaiswal run out (Cummins/Carey) 82

Boland to Kohli, out Caught by Carey!! Two wickets in quick succession for Australia! Both set batters are back in the hut! The outside off stump channel once again comes back to haunt Kohli. He could have left that alone but his instincts made him fiddle at it. Was a good ball from Boland as well to be honest. On a good length on the sixth stump channel, pitches and seams away, Kohli pokes at it and gets an outside edge behind. Carey takes it safely. A lapse in concentration has cost Kohli his wicket. Kohli was in no mood to leave the crease but has to walk off. Kohli c Carey b Boland 36

FOUR, hundred for Nitish Reddy. What a knock! His father is elated, he has tears in his eyes as he joins his hands and prays to the one above. Meanwhile, Reddy crosses over, kneels down, plants his bat and keeps his helmet on top. Yes, you have conquered the G' young man. Coming to the ball: Fullish delivery at the stumps, Reddy clears his front leg and lofts through the line, he gets enough bat to clear the mid-on fielder and Head does not bother to chase it.
A knock that will be remembered for the ages. India were down and out when he walked out to the middle. They were reeling at 191/6 but he weathered everything thrown at him and stitched a vital partnership with Sundar. Now India are in a better position with the deficit close to 100

Was a back of a length ball that jagged back sharply from outside off, Labuschagne was caught in the crease as he looked to block but missed to get struck on the back leg.
