Sturge: $66b on national security, yet no respite from crime

ATTORNEY Wayne Sturge is blaming the Government for rampant violent crime despite over $66 billion being spent on national security in the past ten years, in a statement on December 29.
“The level of fear, horror, terror and anxiety that has been visited upon the citizens of our country during the terms of this present administration is unprecedented,” said the UNC prospective candidate for Toco/Sangre Grande.“The return on this investment has been the highest murder rate in the history of our country. The most demotivated police service. A broken criminal justice system. The highest levels of serious crime ever recorded. The return of kidnapping for ransom.”

“Under Prime Minister Dr Keith Christopher Rowley, and Fitzgerald Hinds as Minister of National Security, 2024 has recorded the highest number of murders in a single calendar year. Every 14 hours, a family has to endure the loss of a loved one to an act of violence.”He said 2023 and 2024 each saw 600-plus murders in Trinidad and Tobago. Further, 2015-2025 had the most people murdered in any decade in TT, he added.

“Nowhere in our country is safe.”“Today, after ten years in government and after spending $66.9371 billion, our naval assets are in an unprecedented state of disrepair, which has resulted in the borders being open to be transgressed on a daily basis by pirates, migrants, drug traffickers and those involved in the transport and sale of contraband.”

State of emergency live X feed

Asked why the PM is not at this press conference, the Acting AG Stuart Young says the PM is not the APPROPRIATE person to speak to the nation about the state of emergency. @Newsday_TT

An idiot as acting AG...
Amazing answer above...sigh

Ag AG Stuart Young reveals the Prime Minister had convened meetings on Sunday with the national security apparatus. Earlier on in the press conference, it was stated that Govt got information only at midnight which led to the decision to call a state of emergency. @Newsday_TT

After 10 years in power, approx. 5,000 murders—80% Africans murdered—they got information last night. What a government?

Nat Sec Min Fitzgerald Hinds says serious crimes in TT include murders, home-invasions, extortion of businessmen, kidnappings for ransom etc. He says the Govt is equally or more concerned about what is happening in the country. @Newsday_TT

This minister is a moron

Ag AG Stuart Young says police will be given powers to search premises, people without warrants during the state of emergency. People can be detained for a period of 48 hours without a warrant or charge. @Newsday_TT

PM absent from press conference: WHY THE SOE WAS DECLARED

Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley, head of the National Security Council, was absent at the press conference.

Asked about his absence, Young said it would not be "appropriate" for him to be the one to explain the details of the SoE.

Now the head of national security, the PM of T&T, it was not appropriate to be present.
He was busy counting the 90,000 dollars per month in pension money plus free health care for life

Paradise ah tell you ...

Citizens in a state of panic

A lack of information over the scope of the actions to be taken during Trinidad and Tobago’s crime-triggered State of Emergency, has left citizens with unanswered questions.
The National Security Ministry has called a press conference for 10a.m. to give details on what happens next.

The press conference will be presided upon by Minister Fitzgerald Hinds and Stuart Young who is acting as attorney general in the absence from the country of Reginald Armour.
Citizens are urging law enforcement to target crime hotspots, patrols every corner of the islands, and use the opportunity to extract the criminal element in law enforcement.

Just after midnight on December 27, Prime Minister took to social media and issued a statement to citizens.

Rowley left it to Young (his Gary Sobers jr) and failure for life Hinds to answer questions.evil

'SoE will solve nothing' former COP Gary Griffith

Former National Security Minister and Commissioner of Police, Gary Griffith, says a state of emergency was not going to solve the rising crime rate in Trinidad and Tobago. It was a stop-gap measure and should not be used as a crime fighting tool, he said.He said, “If it is true that a state of emergency has been called because of an escalation in crime, it again shows the double standard and hypocrisy of this government because I recall when the Peoples Partnership administration called a state of emergency because of a similar concern they attacked the then government and stated a state of emergency should not be used as a crime fighting tool.”

Griffith said it was not a state of emergency that was needed to tackle crime, but the implementation of proper people, policies, technologies and units.

“And me being a previous Minister of National Security, National Security Advisor and Commissioner of Police I can again state similar that a state of emergency is and should not be used as a crime fighting tool. It is a stop gap measure, it is like putting a plaster on a sore. It has not going to deal with the situation,” he said.
He said it was time the government accept that its Minister of National Security and Commissioner of Police were not competent to handle the situation.

SoE reflects Government incompetence

Former UNC Government Minister Vasant Bharath has said that the decision to call a state of emergency mere months before a general election, is an indictment of the Government.
Bharath, in a media statement, said that after nine years of rampant crime and almost 5,000 citizens tragically lost, this reflects incompetence by the government and is also a "glaring example of reactive governance at its worst".

"This move appears less like a genuine attempt to address the root causes of crime and more like a desperate ploy to salvage shattered public confidence," Bharath said.
He added: "The absurdly ridiculous excuse of gang reprisal wears thin on a tired and besieged population, fed up of excuses and excesses. Minister Hind's loquacious explanation would have brought no comfort that any relief is likely. The government has known for the last nine years where the gangs reside and operate and who their members are, and have been comatose to their actions. The use of high-powered illegal weapons in murderous sprees is nothing new."

He argued that a state of emergency might temporarily suppress criminal activities, but it does not resolve systemic issues like corruption, inadequate policing, lack of economic opportunities, or the breakdown of trust in law enforcement and the judiciary."It is a short-term plaster on a festering wound caused by years of institutional degradation. True leadership would have prioritized proactive measures, community policing, judicial reforms, and investments in education and employment to provide sustainable solutions," Bharath said.
