They called it free trade and globalization.
This ideology has its origins under Thatcher and Reagan. In the 1980's China resisted for almost two decades before they joined the club- From GATT to WTO.
One big exception- Western Europe and the USA never in their wildest imagination could have imagined that China would have learn so quickly to beat them at their own game- thus the so called West trade conflict with the US in particular.
All the rest of the third world are reeling form this liberalization, save for a few big economies like Brazil and India with her large domestic market.
Banana's in Trinidad is now imported, all over our region even inferior commercially manufactured American Ice cream is abundant.

With 18 private jets flying into Montego Bay last Monday alone, Jamaica continues to build on its growing allure as a high-end destination, according Senior Advisor and Strategist in the Ministry of Tourism, Delano Seiveright.
From luxurious villas to renowned hotels to rustic lodgings, Jamaica is hosting Hollywood stars, celebrated entertainers, TV personalities, at least one former prominent world leader, other high-ranking politicians from the US and other nations, and some global business tycoons, he said in a release on Saturday.
Seiveright declined to disclose specific names for confidentiality reasons. However, British actor Idris Elba and American rapper Young Miami are among the celebrities who have shared highlights of their vacation on the island on social media.
Tourism Minister, Edmund Bartlett, noted that Jamaica’s tourism story is one of “remarkable resilience and triumph.”

Frozen water you mean ?

ROFL
What I find amazing in this story is the price of $1065 per bag, that US$7.19, last fall I went to Boston for a soccer game, bought ice for the after party, paid$3.90 for a bag and felt ripped off then.

At least ICE is healthier than ice cream; it's such a shame! They also import bottled water in the land dubbed wood and water!
It's a crazy world!
look for Bartlett to come and tell the nation how many visitors came in last year!
In reply to camos
I would cut Barlett a lot of slack; he at least shows enthusiasm for the job!

Guyana is no different! Almost everything is imported.
Even some locally grown produce is more expensive than in the US.

In reply to StumpCam
But Guyana has money to import stuff!
In reply to camos
What about the people that have to pay a premium for imported goods??
In reply to StumpCam
Politicians will figure out subsidies, to keep their constituents happy and preserve their power.
In reply to StumpCam
Local stuff cost more than imported...economics

Litsen here you...
Saffron can only be harvested and processed by hand as its petals must be peeled away gently to collect the delicate saffron threads.
Consequently, an ounce of saffron is valued at more than an ounce of gold.
It is unknown exactly where this precious spice originated, but many believe it came from Greece.
Sold 50 kgs of saffron @ 20 US dollars a gram. And the stuff you have at home in the cupboard could well be fake
Now laugh , sold to a corporation in the US of A...
Yes, it’s very profitable in USA and farmers are growing it on a commercial basis.
Saffron roughly costs $ 29000/- per KG which makes it very lucrative to grow as USA is the biggest consumer of saffron.
Next year bigger crop....

All this has been orchestrated ,especially by America. They hardly want countries
to cultivate their own as they cater tom the American farmers to supply those
countries and Jamaica is top of the list in the Region.
A decade ago when I heard Jamaica importing so much red peas and potatoes ,I
knew we were on the wrong track especially as the AI soil in places like St. Catherine
are being turned into 'Cities and extra Parish on the plains and subsistence farming
by small growers are being shunted to the hills where they have to pump water to
carry on that activity...and the stupid people are enjoying it all.
ICE ? you say. ///Such happens when a people like to be consumers and value foreign goods
more than their own. The lazy merchants in Jamaica are one happy bunch.
I have no empathy for no one in Jamaica ... People need to wake up.
And the worst is yet to come.

Correct is right - it is easier to buy American fruit on our streets than our own. This all started with Seaga
I remember an article in The Gleaner penned by Manley -"When Reagan Killed With A Smile" That and an Afri-Murcan lawyer visiting Yard who told me to buy Chiquita and Del Monte stocks because dem and US gonna win at WTO tells all we need to know on the devastating effects of "liberalization" on small economies
Prof do you think that imported ice can relieve chronic 'pants on fire' ? Or is that a job for Antarctica ?
