PNM MPs pick Rowley’s replacement: Stuart’s in as next T&T PM

Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley has named Stuart Young as his successor—touting Young’s leadership abilities and readiness to steer the nation— following a vote in which Young was chosen over Planning and Development Minister Pennelope Beckles-Robinson.Speaking during a media conference after a two-day People’s National Movement (PNM) caucus at the Tobago Plantations, Dr Rowley offered a glowing endorsement of Young’s qualifications and experience, saying it positioned him as the natural choice to take over the leadership of the party and Government.

“Minister Young came out with the majority of support,” Rowley told the media.
He added, “He (Young) has been in Government now for almost ten years, operating out of the Office of the Prime Minister, where he would have seen the Government close up and participated in it. I have seen him at work on many very detailed and technical assignments, and he has not only done the job but has distinguished himself.”

Young, who has served in several high-profile roles, including Minister of Energy and Energy Industries, Minister of National Security, and Minister in the Office of the Prime Minister, has been a leading player in the Rowley administration.Rowley shared his confidence in Young’s ability to lead Trinidad and Tobago through the challenges ahead, referencing his track record of handling sensitive and complex issues, including national security, energy, and foreign affairs.Young’s tenure, he said, has proven his capacity to manage the responsibilities of leadership effectively

Rowley did not answer a direct question on how close the vote was, but said, “At the end of the day, we had a straw poll among the caucus, and Minister Young came out with the majority. ... It doesn’t involve a three-quarters majority or a half of majority.”
However, party sources told Guardian Media the vote was 11-9 in favour of Young

The vote was 11-9, and it's called a majority... see why math is a problem in T&T...
From one idiot to another.

Senior PNM members tell PM: General Council has final say on Stuart

The PNM’s General Council must have the final say on Stuart Young as prime minister, according to senior party member Jennifer Baptiste-Primus. She also said Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley should step down and deal with the constitutional process to ensure the PNM has a political leader to take the party into 2025 polls.“Anything less is manipulation of the democratic process,” Baptiste-Primus said yesterday.
Her response came after Rowley announced the parliamentary caucus had voted in favour of Young assuming the role of Prime Minister when he steps down.Planning and Development Minister Pennelope Beckles-Robinson also offered herself.

Reacting to the announcement, Baptiste-Primus said she indicated last week that such a situation requires going to the General Council.
“And I still hold that position. While I recognise the party’s parliamentary arm, that’s not the party’s superior body. The superior body is PNM’s convention.”
She added, “Between convention meetings, the General Council is the highest ruling body and there, two things have to happen.Baptiste-Primus added, “Secondly, if the Prime Minister’s prepared to resign, as he wants to spend more time with family, granted then that the same reasons must be operative in your position as political leader– you can’t want to resign as PM as your family needs you and hold on to political leadership!

“So what are you doing? You’re setting up the party to lose! I’ve advocated for the constitution of the PNM … Do the right thing!”
Baptiste-Primus said she didn’t know what would happen if that wasn’t done.

Analysts point to ‘risky’ move after Rowley names replacement

Political analysts say the political winds are shifting within the People’s National Movement (PNM), following yesterday’s endorsement by the parliamentary caucus of Minister Stuart Young to serve as Prime Minister when Dr Keith Rowley steps down from the position.“In terms of knowledgeability, Stuart Young certainly seems to have a lot of knowledge. He is articulate on the agenda of the PNM as personified by Dr Rowley. He has joined Dr Rowley in making Point Lisas the gateway for Venezuelan gas. He is articulate on the issues that have arisen and he is as capable as anyone else. The question is whether the general body of the PNM is going to support that.”During a telephone interview with Guardian Media, James said he suspects the move would come with some rumblings.
“There is going to be some ethnic trouble, I believe.”

Meanwhile, former PNM Minister in the Ministry of Finance, Mariano Browne, slammed the decision by Rowley, saying it sets “a very unsettling precedent.”
“The Office of the Prime Minister is not owned by the Prime Minister. It is not his to give or bestow on a person of his choosing. Nor can he say he is resigning but not be clear on when that is. It makes a mockery of the Parliamentary process and of the people of T&T.
“Further, a parliamentary caucus has no authority to determine who should lead the party. While the constitution may allow the caucus to vote for one of their choosing that diminishes the party and its constitutional mechanisms.”

Omg…Rowley talks like that too? That alone is grounds to step down.
Did he see, or did he not see?

We often pretend we are better than so many other countries when it comes to democracy

This is who we are

A leader anoints his successor and everybody must keep quiet

Jennifer might actually do the first good thing ever in her career
