"Sport was only the first joy to be removed from women in Afghanistan, and since then the Taliban have removed their most basic human rights and freedoms on a prolific scale," Hain wrote.

"Women are denied access to schools and universities, have been barred from most forms of employment and have now been denied all healthcare, as they can no longer train as nurses or be treated by male medics. They are banned from beauty salons, stadiums, gyms and parks, cannot travel alone without a male chaperone, dance, sing or drive. Their faces are banned from view, their voices from being heard, even in prayer. Most recently, the Taliban has banned windows through which women might be glimpsed in their domestic spaces.

"Will South African cricket please raise the plight of Afghan women cricketers in the ICC and express firm solidarity with Afghan women and girls who wish to play?"

"South Africa's decision to continue playing against the Afghanistan national cricket team is not just a sporting choice - it is a tacit endorsement of the Taliban's repressive regime."

He is drawing a parallel between the denial of sporting opportunities during Apartheid and the situation that prevails in Afghanistan today, a position i fully support ...

Uhhhh...so that makes him wrong about any and everything?

How about you address his stated position with justification of your opposing view?

Did you read my post that you responded to? I stated clearly i support the position he is taking regarding the what prevails in Afghanistan currently. I don't care who the guy is and whether he is a convict or not ..... the message remains appropriate

You think the Taliban care if SA don't play Afgans...they may celebrate instead

Allow Afgans to play...it's one of the few things the people get to enjoy

If South Africa and England both refuse to play them, the Afghans should have a good chance of making the semis, so the Taliban will probably be happy.

They seem to be keen on that themselves. I'd be interested to learn why cricket isn't considered haram for men, too.

An ICC working group, set up after the Taliban takeover in 2021, has met with representatives of the Afghanistan government and is keen to use its position and the sport of cricket to influence change in the country.

"The ICC remains closely engaged with the situation in Afghanistan and continues to collaborate with our members," it said in a statement.

The governing body added it was their intention to "support the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) in fostering cricket development and ensuring playing opportunities for both men and women in Afghanistan".

They could get away with this type of shilly-shallying in 2021, but after 3 years it's wearing rather thin.

What you want the ICC to do with Isreal and Palestine?

The cricket world actually got a chance to make change to a major issue but u want them to fight a battle they got no power in?

I really don't understand

I think he meant England and Australia has not banned sporting and economic links with Apartheid state of Israel.

Afghanistan's only sport played internationally is cricket and to be fair SA is one of the leading nations fighting Israel's apartheid and genocide.

That minister’s position actually differs vastly from that of the rest of the ANC part of the government on the Gaza crisis

Copy on that, he is apparently tryin to "show up" the government given their stance on Israel's genocide. South Africa official position on genocide and apartheid is a model for others to follow.
