Dont mess with T&T doubles Beenie Man (Moses Davis)
The former mayor of Point Fortin has joined the people of Trinidad and Tobago in defending the honour of the unofficial national dish – doubles – which Jamaican dancehall singer Beenie Man has mentioned in less than positive terms.Beenie Man (Moses Davis) said that while doubles is “nice,” he did not eat it because stray dogs do not eat it. He made the comment during an interview on the Drink Champs podcast with hosts N.O.R.E. (Victor James Santiago Jr) and DJ EFN (Eric Fernando Narciandi), which premiered on Saturday.
But former Point Fortin mayor Abdon Mason has come after Bennie, sending off an urgent letter to the Express, stating the following:
Since childhood, I have heard this notion echoed by many, including my dear Aunt Rhoda, who once stated, "I don’t eat doubles because dogs don’t eat doubles." However, through experience and observation, I can confidently say that this belief is more myth than fact. While some dogs may indeed refuse doubles, many others will gladly eat it—provided it isn't overwhelmed by pepper, chutney, or other strong seasonings.
Dogs, like humans, have individual preferences. They eat chicken, fish, and dumplings, as you noted, but their reactions to certain foods are often dictated by smell and spice levels rather than the inherent quality of the food itself. The reality is that a heavily seasoned doubles—laden with Chadon Beni (Shadow Benny), kuchela, and hot pepper—may be too intense for a dog's sensitive nostril and palate. This does not diminish the taste, authenticity, or value of doubles as an iconic and beloved Trinbagonian dish.
