Dis

It raises the question which I raised from the very beginning and which leaders in CARICOM have raised at a meeting in Guyana. It is entirely inappropriate, and I want the region to quote me on this. It is entirely inappropriate for the president of Cricket West Indies to remain as president of Cricket West Indies while he is an active politician competing for electoral office in one of those territories, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.

Cricket West Indies is a uniting phenomenon. Cricket West Indies should not be subjected to political divisiveness, and there should be no taint of that cricket. Cricket West Indies, in this regard, is like CARICOM, the OECS, and the University of the West Indies. You don’t expect the vice chancellor of the University of the West Indies, even if the rules don’t completely prohibit it, to be a candidate in Jamaica, Barbados or Trinidad for electoral office. You wouldn’t expect that to be the case with the president of the Caribbean Development Bank. You wouldn’t anticipate that from the secretary general of CARICOM or OECS.

Well…the thing that stood out to me was the term limits thing.

On the one hand…..,they introduced term limits, which on the surface seems like a good thing

I’m assuming that the current state is one could be president and vice president of CWI in perpetuity.

So they changed it so that would no longer be the case.

The change is that it’s now a maximum of 3 terms of 3 years each. Meaning one could only be CWI president or VP for a maximum of 9 years.

OK

But they also voted to increase a term from 2 years to 3 years.

So I’m thinking instead of elections every 2 years, now elections would be mandatory every 3 years. And no one can be President or VP for no more than 3 consecutive terms.

Currently…..you could be President or VP for 4 1/3 terms to be the equivalent of what the reform has put in place.

However, It appears as if the longest serving President of WICBC/WICB/CWI had a total of 6 years or 3 terms anyway.

So in practical terms, while term limits sound nice, it doesn’t appear to alter the reality. In fact…….it potentially gives a President even longer tenure, in terms of years, than what has previously existed.

Kind of rearranging deck chairs on the titanic.

But maybe I reading it wrong

I get it and don’t at the same time.

If I not mistaken, Ken Gordon was a politician.

Julian Hunte was definitely a politician

It’s not surprising to me given the size and population of the region that those lines could get blurred at times.

Ent Forbes was a de facto WICBC President back in de day? big grin

Gonzalves and CWI stuck with Shallow for two three year terms given no challengers unless the Shallow one topples Gonz endless rule of Vincy and becomes PM. Gonz worried, he already apologize to Irfaan and Mia for endorsing the Shallow one. Sport and politics is the same blouse and skirt lol

Very poor......

The only change.....now election every 3 years...
Maximum 3 terms....

In recent past.....non survive more than 2 terms....

2 years term was better as this company is not answerable to anyone and opaque...

Now, 2 terms means 6 years....more time...more food..

Other changes... hogwash....

Julian Hunte was definitely a politician

hunte left CWI to be St Lucia Ambassador to the UK. I believe the SLP got voted out, became an opposition member and then became the deputy PM of SL. I am reading now he was foreign affairs minister from 2001-2004, well before he entered any substantial role at CWI

A Bajan boasted here years ago that being the first stop on the voyage across the ocean, they were blessed with the pick of the litter. With the 'mothership' then making its drop-offs at the other islands in its path, by the time it finally arrived in the Yard, only the riff-raffs remained.

neither held political office while working for West Indies cricket, even some political jobs force people seeking higher office to leave the current job.
