Strong winds pick up Thursday with threat for limited visibility

Snow arrived in southern Ontario Wednesday afternoon, and in combination with blustery winds, made for a tricky and slow drive for the evening commute. The snow picked up in intensity during the overnight hours into Thursday, with snowfall rates forecast to reach 2 to 4 cm/h at times. Before long, more than 20 cm covered most GTA roads and highways.Drivers were urged to stay off the roads for Thursday morning, allowing room for snow removal and a far less stressful commute. The City of Toronto also declared a 'major snowstorm condition,' which went into effect late Wednesday night. Additional air travel disruptions are likely throughout Thursday.Mixing risk in parts of southwestern Ontario: Potential for rain and freezing rain, especially near Lake Erie and western Lake Ontario.

A high-impact winter storm swept through southern Ontario on Wednesday, leaving many communities digging out of at least 10-20+ cm of snow by early Thursday.
For several areas, Toronto included, this is the biggest snowfall of the winter season to date, even rivaling some of the bigger historical snowfalls.
Don't let your guard down just yet, as powerful winds pick up across Ontario on Thursday, reducing visibility after all of the freshly fallen snow.
There's another snowstorm on deck this weekend, as well

Ontario long weekend

Widespread heavy snow will significantly affect weekend travel throughout Ontario, Quebec, and Atlantic Canada as a fresh storm pushes into the region
We’re already on the lookout for another disruptive winter storm looming for the weekend—and that’s before the snow from Thursday’s storm even had a chance to settle on the ground.

A Colorado low sweeping through the northern United States will spill hazardous conditions into Ontario, Quebec, and Atlantic Canada through this weekend.
Widespread heavy snow is likely, while some communities will contend with a messy mix of icy precipitation. There’s some uncertainty on where that snow/mix line will set up—similar to Thursday’s system.
It’s likely that areas that see all-snow will have some hefty shovelling to do by the end of the storm.

A low-pressure system developing over Colorado on Friday will steadily move east across the northern half of the United States into the beginning of the weekend.
Before that system arrives, though, we’ll see a weak disturbance move into Ontario with a batch of light snow spreading into the afternoon hours. This is the precursor to the main event arriving overnight.
Our major system will swing through southern and eastern Ontario through the overnight hours Saturday into Sunday, with widespread heavy snow expected into Sunday morning.
There’s lower confidence in exact snowfall totals right now, but there is the potential for some areas to see just as much as we saw with the Wednesday-Thursday snowstorm this week.

Communities from London, Hamilton, the Greater Toronto Area, and all the way up toward Ottawa could see 20+ cm of snow from this system.
Some northern areas will likely see less snow from this weekend’s system.

A surge of frigid air will spill in behind the storm as northwesterly winds blow across Eastern Canada.
Air temperatures on Tuesday morning will likely dive into the -20s for much of Ontario, with the -10s likely into the Greater Toronto Area and the National Capital Region.
