Canadian prime minister promises “retaliatory trade actions”
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney promised “retaliatory trade actions” on the United States in response to President Donald Trump’s latest tariffs on imported automobiles and parts.
“I reject any attempts to weaken Canada, to wear us down, to break us so that America can own us,” Carney told reporters in Ottawa today after holding a cabinet meeting to discuss a response to Trump’s tariffs.
“We will fight the US tariffs with retaliatory trade actions of our own that will have maximum impact in the United States and minimum impacts here in Canada,” Carney said. “We will protect our workers and our industries during this difficult period, but above all, we will build a new Canadian economy.”
Carney continued by saying that "nothing is off the table to defend our workers and our country" and that the nation "will respond forcefully." In a trade war, he cautioned Canadians that "there is no silver bullet, there is no quick fix." Carney frequently uses the phrase "We are masters in our own home" in public speeches, reiterating a 1960s Québec political catchphrase. Canadians “will never again put ourselves in the position of being so dependent on the United States.”
The prime minister said he and Trump will speak soon and that the White House had reached out last night about a call.
