Lovely story indeed. Saw Cec play his match against Bim in summer of 1958. Had he remained in Jamaica it
is likely that Chester Watson another from the rural area (Wetmoreland) who made his debut that same series
might have been eclipsed by Cec who was the better bowler at the time.
The mention of Pascal Roberts ,brought smiles as he like Wright played cricket well past his 70s. If
still alive he maybe still playing.
League cricket was the thing from Constantine broke the mold with Nelson and George Headley also
followed that path. It was the thing..almost all WI Test stars played the Leagues..The W's, Sobers,Kanhai,Collie Smith
Hunte,Gillie or course and Dewdney. Basil Butcher too used it to revive a career that looked headed south
through selectors ignorance.
Back in the day,if a WI player aligned with a County as Roy Marshall and others did, they would automatically
be unable to represent WI. The mid late 60s that changed for the good for all ,counties and West Indies
talent. The leagues were therefore the avenue to develop their games, earn and learn the British conditions.
Cecil Wright was a phenom ..his long life is testament to one who enjoyed and loved the game to the hilt.
Well lived ,Cec.
Nice read indeed.
