The resignation of Kraigg Brathwaite as West Indies Test captain
The resignation of Kraigg Brathwaite as West Indies Test captain has led to the obvious debate over his replacement.Brathwaite has had his moments since taking over the reins of the regional cricket team in 2021. He steered his troops to a memorable eight-run victory over Australia, in Brisbane. The triumph was the first for West Indies in Australia in 27 years! The harsh reality, however, is that Brathwaite’s overall Test captaincy record is far from impressive—ten wins from 39 matches, with 22 defeats and seven draws.
In fairness to the Barbadian opening batsman, just one of the 14 West Indies Test captains this century has a winning record. And some might argue that Ridley Jacobs winning his only two matches as Windies skipper is too small a sample size to form part of any meaningful discussion. The great Brian Lara won just ten of his 47 Test matches as West Indies captain. Jason Holder managed 11 victories in 37 Tests. In his time at the helm, the regional team’s current coach, Daren Sammy, mustered eight victories in 30 matches. Carl Hooper won four out of 22; and Chris Gayle, three out of 20.In 15 matches as West Indies Test captain, Jimmy Adams enjoyed four triumphs. Shivnarine Chanderpaul tasted victory just once in his 14 outings as skipper. Denesh Ramdin guided West Indies to four Test wins in 13 attempts.
Ramnaresh Sarwan was winless in his four matches as Test captain. Daren Ganga and Floyd Reifer suffered the same fate in two Tests each as Windies skipper. And Dwayne Bravo’s lone Test at the helm ended in defeat.
For what it’s worth, Brathwaite is in great company. Lara, Gayle and Chanderpaul are iconic names in West Indies cricket, and will always be remembered for their batting exploits. When it comes to Test captaincy, though, their combined record of 14 wins in 81 matches is alarming. It’s no overstatement when the post of West Indies Test captain is described as the “toughest job in the world”.
