Experience vs Promise

The young promise is evident. Kevlon Anderson, Shaqkere Parris, Jewel Andrew, Carlon Bowen-Tuckett, Javelle Glen & Cephas Cooper to name but a few. They have all made over 400 runs in the current season, with averages ranging from the high 30s to the 70s - take a bow, Kevlon Anderson, who leads the way with nearly 600 runs.

Markedly contrasting is the current form of more experienced players such as Brandon King, Kavem Hodge, Zachary McCaskie, Alick Athanaze, Keacy Carty, Amir Jangoo, Kirk McKenzie, Jermaine Blackwood, Jeremy Solozano, Kevin Sinclair, or even, albeit in a smaller sample size, Shai Hope & Jason Holder.

Most of the names on the experienced list, would have been in our thoughts when considering the upcoming test series against the Australians. Now, the picture is somewhat different. Hodge, Athanaze & Carty, all recent test team middle order batsmen, have averaged 30 or lower this season, despite playing 17 matches between them. That is simply not good enough. The propensity to throw their wicket away having made a start, has been the pattern, with Hodge the only one of the three to record a ton.

A test middle order of Anderson, Andrew and Parris is extremely unlikely but changes must be made. The captain has stepped down and the new regime, led by Sammy, will want to establish themselves with a positive start.

Perhaps, a view look toward a blend of experience coupled with young talent will be taken. The experience, in age and first class cricket, rather than test match caps, could be taken into account with a view towards the future. Failure cannot be ignored and chances must be offered to those who have shown, at the regional level, that they are deserved.

On merit, I would reward Kevlon Anderson, in the same manner that Mikyle Louis was given the chance following his exploits a year ago. Where he failed to kick on, at least, for now at the test level, perhaps Anderson will shine. Imlach and Da Silva must both play, with the former retaining the gloves. I would not be at all surprised if one of them is actually made captain.

The batting is the patent concern, as the test team have a good, dependable keeper and a strong bowling attack that pretty much picks itself with Seales, S.Joseph & Roach coupled with spin options Warrican & Motie.

The upcoming selection meetings are going to be of significant interest...oh to be a fly on the wall!

this might not be a popular opinion because it seems people want to throw people straight into the test side but i would put most of them in the a side to see how they go against better bowling than the one they faced in the fc championship.they should have done that to louis

I second this suggestion. the gap between our FC and international cricket is too large to expect young guys to be able to bridge immediately. For example, no matter how well Teflon has done this year, how many international standard bowlers has he faced? The downside of course is that we simply cannot face Oz with a batting line up of Hodge, Athas and Carty. Hopefully the A tour precedes the test tour so that selectors can have one final look at potential batting line up, which must in any event include Imlach and Silva

I agree, more A team cricket would be most welcome, in that respect.

Further, although I would not necessarily select him for the test side, I would like to see young Jewel Andrew kept around the test squad - in a similar manner as to how Isai Thorne was in England. This is a very good initiative for a young, no doubt talented and very promising player to get a feel of the game at the highest level. Spending several days watching the Australians up close should also benefit development, especially in regards to concentration & focus, areas of major concern for the regional team's batsmen.

A guy who scored 600+ runs in the season must play 'A' team matches... mind you these matches are played once ever couple years... but others with their mediocre numbers could retain their spots.

Yeah that makes a whole lot of sense....

I agree that these young batters should be tested by playing A team cricket first, but I believe although they are having ordinary seasons both Hodge and Athanaze will be on the first Test team. From his performance this season, Layne has jumped ahead of Thorne, Layne is the top wicket-taker for pacers playing in the tournament.
