tourism is more sustainable than natural resources extraction but like any other industry it has to be properly managed.

Tourism is dependent on the whims of others. Too many factors can crush it in short order

That's a real problem. What would happen if Trump, the World's 'Emperor' and
crazy ass, tells Americans or forbid Americans from venturing to Jamaica ?
Everything would crash especially if he clams down on dollars entering the
country from Homies .
The country has become too dependent or over dependent on Tourism.
So the risks are many especially in this Trump world.

Tourism has enormous potential; we need to grow and diversify the market; expand the services and products we offer them when they arrive. If we fail to do that, the all-inclusive concept will eventually get stale.

hubert 2025-04-12 19:45:08

All Inclusive concept and reality is one reason the benefits to Jamaicans have been
less and money does not circulate among the people as its used to be.
It's pocket change that filters into the economy as most expenses have already
been paid in visitors own countries even before they fly in.
Your points on diversity and services products are well taken but do not seem
to be in the thinking of those in charge. Pity .
Health tourism starting with the Mineral baths is yet to be tapped in a major way.
The ageing population of USA could be a significant and major part of this
as the training of young Jamaicans especially the women in healthcare as care givers could be
a huge plus too as they will be qualified in a needed field home and abroad.

Jamaica should me more than white sand, sun, water and native foods

When the Con cancels and deports us, maybe we could hook up and take
charge of the total tourism product lol

Not just Jamaica - the region. They were warned.

Interesting convo. It was indeed CIA I NSPIRED BAD PRESS that got Manley's got ( Desmond Henry Dir of Tourism) to look to Europe. Cuba that had almost zillion h of an industry took or model, ran with it and now gets millions more tourist than us. As to benefits go- a. Not only do All-inclusives "collar* all revenues from Food and Beverage but they also plan tours that restrict the visitors from spending in the general pop6.
Then the hoteliers simultaneously restrict tips but do not remit the full gratuity charges to their staff

The region is still enslaved. Sad to say it but we don't know what we have
or how to manage and benefit. Instead we rely too much outside folks who
readily exploit us and profit immensely leaving us the dregs.

Air JA was supposed to be the main carrier of tourists and as soon as it
fell, quite a few airlines find routes to Jamaica. It was a destabilizing endeavor
that is now very profitable to all and sundry and with a 4th Airport being
planned for Negril area a destination is all we will have.

Something not right but we are being laughed at and all the time best beached are
being swallowed up by outside interests leaving the natives deprived and can only watch.

Just about everything depends on the whims and fancies of people.

Diversity is the key. The late great Owen Arthur helped to developed the financial and offshore sector in Barbados but the big boys decided to crack down on them calling them tax havens.

Need to develop some kind of high level service to sell to the world. Medicine, education, law, something.

Diversifying our economies is the only option. This tourism only is a recipe for disaster
